Mermaids is encouraging children to hide online searches from their parents

Surely this is a child safeguarding breach and is an example of child grooming?

The trans children charity Mermaids has created a button on its desktop website so that children can immediately jump to another web site if a parent comes into the room, presumably while either looking at Mermaids material or talking to someone at the charity, so they can lie to their parents that they were actually doing something else.

They've created this because more children are home at the moment during the coronavirus pandemic.

The charity has received further criticism in the last few days for not playing what could be an important role during COVID-19:

  • They should be telling transboys to ditch their binders until this is over - the binders constrict the chest and lead to breathing difficulties, something that's potentially fatal during a pandemic where the virus targets the lungs; but Mermaids have refused to do this.
  • They should be telling all young trans people to stay away from hospitals unless there's an emergency as non-essential treatment increases the risk of spreading the virus at the moment; Mermaids has not done this.
  • They have instead asked people to buy more food on Amazon and set Mermaids up as the charity to donate a percentage of the money spent to - ignoring all charities concerned with NHS staff or the elderly that desperate need cash injections at the moment.

The thing I don’t get is that if your (“you” being a Mermaids supporter) primary concern is for trans identified children to be safe and secure, why do you not demand better from Mermaids?

They have had several terrible data breaches involving extremely sensitive data relating to children,

They hand wave about the potentially inappropriate contact between minors and adults in their support groups

They have veered from being supporters of watchful waiting for children to advocating for an earlier and much more aggressively medicalised treatment path

They have (I think) continuing relationships with GPs who have been struck off the medical register

One of their former officers pursued legal action against a transsexual person

Their CEO is on record in a TED talk laughing about her child’s stunted genitals, and explaining how her husbands homophobia played a significant role in their child’s transition.

They campaign for under age children to be able to be prescribed cross sex hormones, with no age limit, basing this on the perception that pre teen children will be able to correctly assess the impact of this decision on their lives. Their CEO denies that this amounts to sterilising these children (how could it not?).

They misrepresent statistics on suicide and discuss the matter in exactly the way that the Samaritans recommends it is not discussed (for example, attributing suicide to one factor).

Why don’t you want better from this group? Why do you continue to accept such shoddy organisation and poor standards? Do you think that they do the best by the children that they say they want to help?

Have concerns about child safety? Here are some of the responses from the Penises at Penis News.

Threats of violence and dehumanising language work so well to convince people eh?

I think a check on each and every one of their hard drives would be sensible.

Transgender advocacy maintains the social hierarchy while redefining homophobia and misogyny as progressive.
Mermaids Green admits the husbands homophobia was the reason for what she did to the child. Profiting from child abuse makes my skin crawl.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 26/03/2020 19:06

Someone needs to disband this organization. It's potentially very dangerous.

R0wantrees · 26/03/2020 18:08

Or are these two things actually the same?

No I dont think so

Mermaids' tweet:
"We're proud to announce Digifest 2020 in support of Mermaids: the UK's biggest LGBT+ live-streaming festival of celebrities, live music and discussion. Get April 4th in your diary! "

(seems noone thought to check the name first)

Xanthangum · 26/03/2020 17:30

Can someone help me out with Digifest2020?

It looks like an event that happened earlier this month in Birmingham - something for educationalists about the possibilities of online learning?
www.jisc.ac.uk/events/digifest-10-mar-2020/about

But - Mermaids have just created another Digifest2020? twitter.com/Mermaids_Gender/status/1243202298672750593

Like many others I remain unconvinced that rejecting the box and attempting to switch boxes are in any way the same thing.

So 'the family' referred to are probably siblings.

It is parents responsibility to ensure devices used by children are in public areas and policed throughout. This falls on the parents everyone l every time and every information website can be expected to start from this premise.

Justhadathought · 26/03/2020 15:48

I rejected the box and discovered myself so i'm mindful to agree with your last comment

Maybe, but there is only so far you can go with rejecting your body, or your biology. One might dislike one's body for any number of reasons, or the associations it brings with it....but at the end of the day you are stuck with it...... It really is a kind of destiny. Life on earth and all..... Although, how you express your inner self is very much dependent on what drives you.

Owen Jones has accused Janice Turner of bigotry for pointing out that this is a tactic deployed by child groomers

Lots of men prioritise their own agenda ahead of child safeguarding.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 26/03/2020 14:23

Has Jones ever done any actual investigative journalism? All I've ever seen from him are opinion pieces.

CodenameVillanelle · 26/03/2020 14:22

@statsgeek1

No, the above is a suggestion to investigate those that make the claim or present with the symptoms to a medical professional . The study which is oft referred to from 2011 suggestsof those that do, over 84% will go on to have no treatment at all

I and most of us support this. Mermaids do not. They consider treating trans identity as a medical issue to be bigotry and transphobia. They see it as conversion therapy.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 26/03/2020 14:18

Owen "embarrassment to his profession" Jones says what?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 26/03/2020 14:15

When it was pointed out, the NSPCC doubled down and accused those of pointing it out of transphobia and homophobia.

But then quietly fired him. Because at the top they know it's not a good look.

BovaryX · 26/03/2020 14:15

I recall, Owen Jones also described as bigotry any disquiet over the behaviour of NSPCCs very own rubber man

Janice Turner being accused of bigotry by Owen Jones? One of them is a journalist doing her job. The other is a clown most recently to be found denying responsibility for his own signature on a notorious petition....

Datun · 26/03/2020 14:14

When it was pointed out, the NSPCC doubled down and accused those of pointing it out of transphobia and homophobia.

I know I'm quoting my own post, but honestly, I still can't get over this.

I don't know why the NSPCC wasn't subjected, immediately, to an investigation and shut down in the meantime.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 26/03/2020 14:12

Generally speaking I prefer to take advice from people who have some level of demonstrated understanding of how the society they live in works.

Datun · 26/03/2020 14:10

Yeah, right. They'll be rushing to do so.

IKR? Honestly.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 26/03/2020 14:08

course, if there is a genuine concern about safeguarding with regards to this particular issue, then social services and the police like the National Lottery previously would likely be interested to hear about it and be well placed to look into it.

Yeah, right. They'll be rushing to do so.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 26/03/2020 14:08

We have a multitude of data about the impact on children living apart from their parents - and they're all negative.

Knowing what I do about the typical outcomes for kids raised in care I'd only advocate for them being removed from their families for very serious reasons indeed. "My mum told me that people can't change sex" is not a good enough reason to expose kids to that level of risk.

Datun · 26/03/2020 14:07

If you know of grooming though, please report it to those who can investigate.

Oh this is hilarious. Monro Bergdorf encouraged children to contact them secretly. The person who employed Munro wanked off at work in a rubber suit and uploaded a film of it onto social media.

Both these things happened at the NSPCC. A body which has statutory powers, for fuck's sake.

When it was pointed out, the NSPCC doubled down and accused those of pointing it out of transphobia and homophobia.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 26/03/2020 14:05

Mermaids do not work from a basis informed by child development or Safeguarding knowledge.

This is the key point here. Mermaids are a trans lobby group. There is a conflict of interest with child safeguarding.

truthisarevolutionaryact · 26/03/2020 14:04

Arguing the toss over fundamental safeguarding and health issues for vulnerable children is precisely what those targeting children do.
Alienate from families, isolate them, feed their fantasies and lo and behold - a vulnerable and isolated child with no family back up. All available research details the appalling negative consequences for children (social, academic, health and emotional wellbeing). We have a multitude of data about the impact on children living apart from their parents - and they're all negative.
Yet this ideology actively advocates this in the face of all available evidence.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 26/03/2020 14:03

When misdirection is attempted there's usually a reason for that.

Datun · 26/03/2020 14:00

We're not talking about GIDS. We're talking about mermaids! GIDS aren't telling children to isolate themselves from their parents.

Can you imagine?
