NC but regular FWR poster.

So, as the nation's children are at home, Andrew Moffatt is going to be creating videos of his 'No Outsiders' books and assemblies for them to watch.

This is being promoted by schools already and I'm concerned parents will have no idea about the harm this material promotes in relation to girls and gender ideology.

If you work in schools please keep a close eye on this.

.. well, if we are to leave the fight against the far right to the No Outsiders Programme we’ll all be walking around in brown shirts by the end of the year.

MoleSmokes · 01/04/2020 20:11

Thank you R0wantrees !

Given that No Outsiders purports to be leading the fight against terrorism and the far right I suppose it is equally likely that they could claim "dispensation" on those grounds?

R0wantrees · 01/04/2020 13:26

There is currently no information available about the trustees of this charity

(I have never come across a Charity with no Trustees to oversee it. I was a Trustee of a national charity for many years from its first AGM.)

There are special circumstances ('dispensation') when trustees names are hidden.

(extract)
"Changes to public display names on the register
From the 1 April 2020 the name of all charity trustees will be displayed to the public on the charity register, unless a dispensation has been granted.

In special circumstances, we can prevent a trustee’s name from being made public on the charity register. This is known as granting a dispensation.

We can grant a dispensation if displaying an individual’s name could put the relevant person or people in personal physical or mental danger. Dispensations will not be granted automatically.

If a trustee or charity has already been granted a dispensation for names not to be displayed to the public, this will remain in place. There is no need to apply for a dispensation again.

Dispensations are granted either to an individual trustee, or to a whole trustee board." (continues)

I imagine that some might make the claim that due to 'transphobia' etc their name should be hidden?

Melroses · 01/04/2020 12:24

It is interesting that they seem to know what the actual protected characteristics are under 'Activities'

MoleSmokes · 01/04/2020 11:50

A reminder of that aim:

"No Outsiders charity provides a 7 year programme to be taught in primary schools with the aim of building community cohesion and prevent children being drawn into terrorism and far right activities."

Theoretically at least, "No Outsiders" does have a clear link to the Prevent Programme:

www.gov.uk/government/publications/prevent-duty-guidance/revised-prevent-duty-guidance-for-england-and-wales#e-sector-specific-guidance

  1. Early years providers already focus on children’s personal, social and emotional development The Early Years Foundation Stage framework supports early years providers to do this in an age appropriate way, through ensuring children learn right from wrong, mix and share with other children and value other’s views, know about similarities and differences between themselves and others, and challenge negative attitudes and stereotypes

Does the stated aim of No Outsiders reflect the aims of the Prevent Programme because it is an avenue to securing contracts with Schools and Councils? It is smart marketing, "You have a problem (complying with the Prevent Strategy) and hey, look, I have the solution!"

But does No Outsiders provide that solution?

The Reviews on Amazon are very mixed! (You have to scroll a long way down the page to get to them.)

On the No Outsiders website there are three extra Lesson Plans:

no-outsiders.com/lesson-plans

These are:

"Egg" by Sue Hendra and Paul Linnet

"Keith among the pigeons" by Katie Brosnan

"The little island" by Smriti Prasadam-Hallis and Robert Starling

That first Lesson Plan, Egg . . . I know it is April 1st but this next bit isn't an April Fool's Joke!

This might be 2+2 = 5 but given the emphasis on trans to the virtual exclusion of all else in the No Outsiders materials (review on Transgender Trend) . . . an "Egg" in transgender lingo . . .

knowyourmeme.com/memes/egg-mode

About

"Egg" or "Egg Mode" is an internet slang term used to describe transgender individuals who do not realize they are a transgender person yet, or are in denial about being a transgender individual.

The term is best compared to "the closet," a term used when referring to a state of secrecy and insecurity about one's homosexuality, with "hatching" having a similar meaning as "coming out."

Origin

On August 23rd, 2016, the term "Egg mode" was defined by Urban Dictionary user bitplane7 as "Someone who is trans but doesn't know it yet. Someone who is still an embryo of the trans person they will eventually hatch into."

On August 9th 2017, Urban Dictionary user happycookie defined "egg" as "Transgender person who hasn't come out yet. A chick or a cock on the inside." the definition has received 329 upvoted and 89 downvotes in two years. It has since become the top definition for this term. [3]

Precursor

Prior to becoming popular in the transgender community, "Egg Mode" was infrequently used to describe pets, most commonly cats sitting with their legs completely hidden under their bodies, giving them an egg shape.

Spread

On July 26th 2017, the subreddit r/eggirl was created [4] it's name being a variant of the popular Me IRL subreddits. The subreddit r/eggirl is self described as "memes about trans people who don't know they're trans yet" and "Memes about trans people in denial."

It has gained over 34,000 members in less than two years.

---

The "egg" thing might be nothing but since the whole package fails to do what it purports to do and is so "trans heavy", it does make one wonder if it is yet another thing that is "hiding in plain sight".

MoleSmokes · 01/04/2020 11:48

Perhaps the most bizarre aspect of "No Outsiders" is that, as an organisation, its Charitable Aim is to "prevent terrorism" and oppose the "far right".

That does sort of make sense, if you ignore what it actually does!

It mentions terrorism and the far right on the No Outsiders website - see "Charity Overview" on this page:

Government Guidance on Charity Trustees

(this is very comprehensive, I have only picked one part)

Charity trustee: what’s involved (CC3a)
www.gov.uk/guidance/charity-trustee-whats-involved

About charity trustees

Trustees have overall control of a charity and are responsible for making sure it’s doing what it was set up to do. They may be known by other titles, such as:

directors
board members
governors
committee members

Whatever they are called, trustees are the people who lead the charity and decide how it is run. Being a trustee means making decisions that will impact on people’s lives. Depending on what the charity does, you will be making a difference to your local community or to society as a whole.

Trustees use their skills and experience to support their charities, helping them achieve their aims. Trustees also often learn new skills during their time on the board.

Before you start - make sure you are eligible

You must be at least 16 years old to be a trustee of a charity that is a company or a charitable incorporated organisation (CIO), or at least 18 to be a trustee of any other sort of charity.

You must be properly appointed following the procedures and any restrictions in the charity’s governing document.

You must not act as a trustee if you are disqualified unless authorised to do so by a waiver from the Commission. The reasons for disqualification are shown in the disqualifying reasons table and include:

being bankrupt or having an individual voluntary arrangement (IVA)
having an unspent conviction for certain offences (including any that involve dishonesty or deception)
being on the sex offenders’ register

You can read the automatic disqualification guidance for charities which explains the disqualification rules in more detail.

There are further restrictions for charities that work with children or adults at risk.

Pressure is mounting for the (mis)guidance to be amended to comply with the Equality Act and I don't see Moffat's fairy stories surviving the inevitable legal challenge.

Yes, definitely challenge this in your children's schools. They are often unaware they are providing incorrect information.

R0wantrees · 27/03/2020 10:20

Andrew Moffat is deliberately misquoting the law, where do we report this?

People can (& should) contact any school misquoting the Equality Act 2010.
Many have done this already with regards schools' diversity/inclusion policies. These have often been corrected
Schools will likely have made the error in good faith having downloaded information from what they believed was a trusted source.
It can be useful to advise governors of concerns as well as teaching staff.

Ikeasucks · 27/03/2020 10:14

It’s already happening - all you have to do is get some folk into certain positions (education, local council, student union etc) where they can just change these things and no one notices. I knew nothing about the EA at all till a few yrs ago. My kids school had the EA as SEX/including transgender. I mean, where did that come from - someone is deliberately doing this

Lordfrontpaw · 27/03/2020 10:12

Quietly? No chance - more and more people are waking up to this and not just thinking 'aw the poor souls, it must be terrible...' and saying 'hang on...'

ScapaFlo · 27/03/2020 10:03

My fear is that the government will just quietly update the Equality Act because so many institutions are misquoting it. I fear the government will just quietly and thoughtlessly bring it in line with the current sneaked-in narrative. And women and girls will lose. Again.

Ikeasucks · 27/03/2020 09:56

How does likes of Mermaids get away with this. How can the EA2010 be applied to kids just declaring they want to use different pronouns, change their name or be nb etc? How can it be applied to kids in infant school?

I asked him fairly politely on twitter a year or more ago if he realised he had the EA wrong and he blocked me

GRAConcerns
The multi academy trust Excelsior must not be a smokescreen that conveniently prevents people from pointing out irregularities in their operational activites.

They are influencing children within the school setting.
Andrew Moffat is appearing to be an expert in the Equality Act and working with schools.
Yet all the while misquoting the Equality Act.
Thankyou OP we need to keep a close eye on this.

GRAConcerns · 27/03/2020 08:13

His services are being pushed by his multi academy trust, Excelsior, but not sure where the misleading re EA protected characteristics is reported to.

OP posts:
Lordfrontpaw · 27/03/2020 08:11

It’s important that parents keep an eye on what’s their kids are looking at and who they are speaking to on the web.

KatvonHostileExtremist · 27/03/2020 08:05

No one should be misrepresenting the law and pushing an ideology in our schools.

Schools are being mislead. Moffat calls himself an expert on the Equality Act.

Schools don’t have to teach children about the equality act. They have to teach children within the context of the equality act.

Telling small children that they have to treat certain groups in particular ways because this is the law is weaponising minority groups.

endofthelinefinally · 26/03/2020 07:35

He really is a man on a mission, isn't he.

GRAConcerns · 23/03/2020 15:57

I see that as a problem too Chicken.
My children are at home and I'm working, so can't oversee everything.

I'd see the resource and believe it to be harmless. And, because it is being endorsed by senior leaders, I'd assume it was high quality.

This is how I think it will slip through the net.

Wouldn’t this actually be an opportunity for parents to witness the material and see it for themselves rather than sending their children into school clueless and uninformed?

Yes
Parents & carers should be aware that Moffat misrepresents the Equality Act 2010 by referring to gender/gender identity & ignoring the importance of sex-based protections.
This is a key piece of legislation.

WPUK
"The Equality Act (2010) identifies 9 protected characteristics.

They are

age
disability
gender reassignment
marriage & civil partnership
pregnancy & maternity
religion or belief
race
sex
sexual orientation
These protected characteristics exist to ensure that everyone is treated equally and fairly and to guard against discrimination."

Wouldn’t this actually be an opportunity for parents to witness the material and see it for themselves rather than sending their children into school clueless and uninformed?

I think that the problem with might be that parents, who may well be working from home themselves, simply won’t have time to do much more than glance at some of the resources they pass to their kids. If parents are able to find a bit of time to help their children, then they will probably concentrate on subjects such as maths and reading. Resources such as No Outsiders, which parents may have heard of slightly but have no real knowledge of, may be used by parents who see them simply as a way to teach their children to be kind and/or inclusive. The parents won’t necessarily notice that the resource is actually teaching children (especially girls) to ignore boundaries and also teaching children about girl brains and boy brains i.e a boy that likes dresses is probably therefore a girl, as well as other worrying things.
