The GeordieKnits (not Geordie Knitter who's a different person) podcaster who came out of nowhere to drive much of the purity spiral in the UK has been jailed for fraud.

www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/news/18300481.woman-jailed-12k-day-trip-disneyland-holiday-fraud/

I saw it on Instagram this morning www.instagram.com/p/B9orQ2WpJO6/?igshid=t6lflwwba82z

So the accusations of profiteering on the basis of holding the moral high ground seem to have substance.

You're welcome BlackeyedSusan

The sanctimonious hectoring is almost unbearable and it does get in your head!
Yes! This. Though I've just read the thread about a walk with the kids and some posters are just so over the top it's cheered me up.

I have my finger poised over the mute button for the most obstreperous covigilante on my Facebook today...I’m only not doing it because frankly, I need the shot of rage to lift me out of the despair!

BacklashStarts · 26/03/2020 16:10

Yes, there are mega purity spirals going on with C19! The sanctimonious hectoring is almost unbearable and it does get in your head!

BlackeyedSusan · 26/03/2020 16:09

Thanks Flavia.. the post about self exclusion purity spirals is very helpful.

Nick Cohen has an excellent piece in Standpoint mag about the censorious culture of the liberal left - he covers the trans rights issue among other things:

standpointmag.co.uk/issues/april-2020/defeat-begets-defeat-for-britains-cloth-eared-left/

The paragraph about the games designer is particularly funny.

RoyalCorgi · 26/03/2020 15:36

One of the things that the internet has made crystal clear is that lots of people love nothing more than sitting in judgement on others - to an extent that would be funny if it wasn't completely insane.

Grin it is utterly absurd. I

I can't get over the puppy pad thing. Yes, let's live in quite literal piles of shit during a health crisis, what a brilliant suggestion.

Presumably the smugness tea you drink with the self righteousness cake helps it go down easier! Clearly air freshener will also be key.

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 26/03/2020 12:13

I image it would be hard to swallow when you start getting hungry Wink

Can you eat self righteousness?

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 26/03/2020 11:58

Thank goodness it's not just me.

I agree I'm all for lockdown and it should have came sooner than it did in the UK, but I saw bread, milk, eggs and meat declared as non essentials. With shelves emptying of rice, pasta or potatoes, I'd love to see a typical weeks meals from those posters.

(Or window if they live in a flat)

The image of a top floor flat scenario will occupy my mind for ages now.

It's been making me feel snarky enough that I asked if people were suggesting that the dog's owner just stick the dog's arse out the door and squeeze.

SophocIestheFox · 26/03/2020 11:27

It really is bringing out the thwarted prefect in some people.

Datun · 26/03/2020 11:17

There were suggestions that if your dog is so inconsiderate as to need to eliminate more than once per day you should just buy puppy pads

Oh I didn't see that one.

Datun · 26/03/2020 11:17

That's reassuring, kittens. I was idly reading yesterday about a woman who wanted to drive to the woods for an isolated walk, or, alternatively, walk on her estate potentially bumping into people like ninepins.

Whatever your personal opinion, the reactions were so extreme I started to laugh out loud.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 26/03/2020 11:16

On the Coronavirus threads, yes. I'm all for social distancing measures and have been under lockdown for longer than the UK has, but when you see people having bunfights about whether or not it's OK to take your dog out a second time in a day to pee/poo, and whether or not it's OK to let them walk around for a few minutes until they're able to do so, you do start wondering how much is understandable fear and how much is people loving the chance to scold others.

(There were suggestions that if your dog is so inconsiderate as to need to eliminate more than once per day you should just buy puppy pads and let them do so inside the house. Which I'm sure will work out brilliantly over however many weeks/months lockdown lasts.)

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 26/03/2020 11:13

I've yet to see a person who's deeply invested in imposing their idea of what is or is not appropriately woke on others who hasn't turned out to be a fairly awful human being.

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 26/03/2020 11:04

Off topic to knitting but is anyone else seeing something like purity spiral in the Corona virus leaving the house threads?

It's like the Mumsnet chicken that can feed a family of 5 for a week taken to extremes.

No matter how many separate self isolating families you're shopping for, or how empty the shelves are of basics or the limits on the amount you can buy at once, unless you can declare you're shopping only once a week some posters are declaring you're a selfish idiot who is responsible for killing people.

I’m glad I found it because it’s actually a great thread - also touching on the problem of American terms being shoe-horned into European and British contexts. I’ll read the other when I’m in bed.

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 15/03/2020 21:29

That's jogged my memory enough that I remembered there was a second one when the radio program was broadcast, it's here

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3809276-Purity-spirals

I thought that the instigators refused to be interviewed because it would be nearly impossible to logically justify their position but an upcoming court appearance would probably factor in too!

That's it, thanks Twunk! It'll be interesting to re read it now.

Is this the thread you mean Flavia?
