Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Trans actors can play cis but cis can't play trans. Why am I bothering to try and see the sense?

A trans woman was due to play a woman in a play but declined when it turned out a trans woman would be played by a man. As far as I can tell, the trans character undergoes no medical or surgical transition so would have a wholly male physique anyway.

The casting decision could cause violence and death, apparently.

I'm sure the talent pool is limited just down the numbers. Would it have been acceptable for a woman to play the part?

But if the actor cast to play the trans part uttered the magic words 'I feel like a woman' he would cease being 'a man in a dress' and would instead be sufficiently stunning and brave to play that role; and then the trans actor would have felt it ok for them to play the role of a woman (which they are perfectly qualified for by dint of having said the magic words...)

Have I got that right?

Mockerswithnoknockers · 11/03/2020 16:51

...Not to mention Saoirse Ronan's impeccable Marcia Blaine Edinburghian when Marie Stuart was a Frog.

Something wrong with Mel Gibson's accent in Braveheart ?

It wandered from accuracy even more than the plot did Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 11/03/2020 16:43

Honestly, I think the casting directors should go with this 100% - trans people for trans parts only, women for women's, men for men's. (Parts in which the sex or gender is unimportant to the story should, as with race, not take it into account at all. )

Then if there's a trans actor who can play the part convincingly fine, if not then scrap the project.

teawamutu · 11/03/2020 16:41

Frankly, and to my lasting fury, the only media outlets even vaguely interested in fairness when it comes to women's rights are the right wing ones.

Mockerswithnoknockers · 11/03/2020 16:40

I’m holding out for only Scottish actors to play Scots.

Something wrong with Mel Gibson's accent in Braveheart ?

(Didn't he dodge the Vietnam Draft by saying he was Australian in the USA and a US Citizen in Australia - Now that's being what you're not.)

PondLover · 11/03/2020 16:39

Didn't Eddie Redmayne actually play (in The Danish Girl?) a very early transwoman who had surgery in the 1920s and eventually died of complications from that surgery?

Or have we simply advanced a long way into anti-science AND purity casting since 2015 or whenever that film came out?

donquixotedelamancha · 11/03/2020 16:36

Yours is the same argument used by the right wing press who have brained washed their gullible readers (ahem) into thinking that being fair is now liberal/left wing and that all outlets should agree to their right wing bias.

I don't think the right wing press are trying to persuade everyone that 'being fair is now liberal/left wing'.

Are you seriously arguing that this transwoman's demand is unquestionably fair.

SophocIestheFox · 11/03/2020 16:32

I’m holding out for only Scottish actors to play Scots. I am oppressed by atrocious faux Scots accents. It’s colonialism! From the oppressor!

Mockerswithnoknockers · 11/03/2020 16:29

Elijah Wood not an actual hobbit??????

S'a disgarce!!!

EndoplasmicReticulum · 11/03/2020 16:26

Completely off topic but I wish they'd do purity casting with actors whose characters play the violin. (Looking at you, Umbrella Academy).

FemaleAndLearning · 11/03/2020 16:26

I wonder how accepting of the character Haley from Coronation Street people would have been if she was played by a male acting as a transwoman? I would imagine (as I don't watch soaps) everyone has forgot Haley is trans!

ErrolTheDragon · 11/03/2020 16:23

Do we need to recall Daniel Day-Lewis in My Left Foot?

Or Eddie Redmayne in The Theory of Everything ..... a History of Art grad playing a cosmologist.... Shock

ginghamstarfish · 11/03/2020 16:22

I read about that, and thought WTF ... and please don't use that ridiculous term 'cis'.

RuffleCrow · 11/03/2020 16:19

There's no 'cis'.

SophocIestheFox · 11/03/2020 16:19

From the BBC article “ having an actor who was born male playing a trans woman increases prejudice“

So the trans woman character should have been played by someone who is a trans woman, but who was not born male? Confused

Um, who could play that? only people born male (even if you think they were “assigned” rather than observed) can be transwomen, right?

What a nonsense. The point about acting is that you can be something you are not. If you can only play a version of yourself, that’s not acting, that just showing up in a play.

Hmm yes, nasty old science saying that you can't change sex. Chromosomes are so right wing. I'm off right now to burn my kids biology textbook. Glad you made me see the light.

andyoldlabour · 11/03/2020 16:15

"Industry advice from trans-led charity Gendered Intelligence - "having an actor who was born male playing a trans woman increases prejudice because "many people internalise the myth that being trans is a performance, a deception, that trans women are 'really men".

This has gone way beyond ridiculous.

BringbackLang · 11/03/2020 16:13

The BBC give a balanced view. Bwahahahaha

Imnobody4 · 11/03/2020 16:10

The Mail story is taken from the BBC one.

I know, I had to read that a couple of times to make sure I wasn't seeing things. The absurdity of it is astonishing.

Cheeseandwin5 · 11/03/2020 16:04

That's hilarious. The BBC have the most blatant agenda on trans issues of any news outlet. Well, except maybe Pink News.

Why what was the bias that was picked up in the report?

HollowTalk · 11/03/2020 16:02

O'Donnell said: "I could not be in a show where a trans woman is once again seen as a man in a dress as this perpetuates the idea that this is what a trans woman is and leads to violence, even death.

But... but...

Whatsnewpussyhat · 11/03/2020 16:02

So they should've got a female to play the mother and a trans woman to play the trans woman.
