Evan Davis misgenders a non-binary activist

Did anyone hear the segment on non-binary passports on R4 PM just now? Evan Davis introduced the segment: "Christie Elan-Cane brought the case blah blah... I spoke to her earlier - " and then he realised what he'd said and literally stopped and spluttered for ages. Must try to clip it and share - it was so hilarious that DD came into the kitchen to find out what I was laughing at!

How do interviewers resist blurting out “What a load of shit!,” or words to that effect?

The passport office is discriminating against loonies who call it “purr passport.”

Still, never mind, easy mistake, could happen to anyone.
At least 'per' sounds like the pronoun 'her'.

Per = her
What's the pronoun for 'his'?

Per is the unisex pronoun in one of my all time favourite novels (Woman on the Edge of Time) and I have a huge soft spot for it. But I would never ever ever ever ask anyone to address me by it

I noticed that the non-binary person claimed it was discriminatory not to be allowed an X option, but given that every single person on the planet can be categorised* as M or F I wasn't sure who was being discriminated against?

(*some rare intersex conditions may make categorisation less straightforward)

You can apply for a passport in an acquired gender. This option is available to those who do not hold a Gender Recognition Certificate or have not had gender reassignment surgery, as well as those who have.

(The Piers and Nandy segment wasn't so amusing but I recommend it also if you have time to watch. So many new news stories these days, it's hard to keep up, but there's no denying it, this is definitely getting the media exposure we all once hoped for.)

I didnt hear the start of the piece but I switched on half way through and heard Evan's apology. When he said "per" i was so pissed off. It's madness.

On the issue the non-binary individual has been fighting, I just have no words. What an utter waste of time. Where's the money come from for 30 years of legal fees? (Turned out I did have a few words ...)

I was in my kitchen listening - it was horrifying but so funny - he really, really tied himself up in knots - I thought he was going to combust. And then when he tried to apologise and nearly fucked up again because even he couldn’t quite manage the linguistic mangling of ‘purr’. I must be a bad influence because I so very rarely listen to Radio 4 but the last time I did was when he started interviewing a lawyer about Trump and the guy had to tell him that he wasn’t interviewing who he thought he was interviewing. Got to find it again on I-Player. And the Per Person has been fighting this battle to be classed as X for 30 years? 30 years!!!
