Men whistling loudly

Does anyone else get fed up with men that whistle loudly and tunelessly in public? It's so rude! And before anyone says that women do it too, I can't say I've ever noticed a woman doing it!

I was just browsing in a small shop. A man came in, whistling extremely loudly, which was annoying in itself but then he came and stood right next to me and started browsing there and whistling right in my ear!

After a couple of minutes I said, politely 'Can you stop whistling in my ear please?'. He looked so shocked, as if it was the most shocking thing anyone had ever said to him, then just said 'How bloody rude!' and gave me a filthy look.

I carried on looking for a few minutes and he did stop whistling but kept giving me dirty looks until I left the shop.

The loud music from a vehicle I complete agree with (although it isn’t always men). I just never associate whistling with anything negative.
Maybe because I remember my Dad whistling while he shaved in the mornings? It was the background to my childhood mornings Grin

Sorry how that came across. Yes of course spitting is worse; it's vile. I was grouping them together as examples of territory marking. Another bugbear of mine would be playing music really loud either where they live (poor neighbours!) or from a vehicle. Man spreading is another one isn't it? The message always seems to be this is my bit and if you don't like it you know what you can do. I think these things are all signs of aggression, but yeah, some are worse than others.

Oh, and I do believe that not all men are like that. Too many are tho' eh?

Thisismytimetoshine · 06/03/2020 14:20

Oh, honestly! Get over yourselves.

slipperyeel · 06/03/2020 14:18

Totally agree, hate it. Seems to me to be saying “I am a man. This is my space. I do not have to accommodate you in any way”.

The aural equivalent of man spreading.

There's another sort of whistle that men do now. Not as overt as a wolf whistle but a low key sporadic whistling that starts up when a vaguely attractive woman is around. DD and I have both noticed it.

Dhalandchips · 06/03/2020 14:12

Oh christ, I'm an habitual whistler... Obviously a twat. I'll try to not whistle! Sorry to anyone I may have inadvertently offended!

DidoLamenting · 06/03/2020 14:09

Honestly some of you really do go to extraordinary lengths to find something to get offended by.

DidoLamenting · 06/03/2020 14:03

I can't say I've ever noticed this phenomenon.

Stealhsquirrelnutkin · 06/03/2020 13:42

It always makes me think of little boys on the swings screaming "Look at me mummy! Look at me!"

Thisismytimetoshine · 06/03/2020 12:39

No, it was HorseWithNoLang who said “same thing”.

I find men whistling irritating. I would find someone singing or humming loudly to be equally annoying, but I rarely hear people doing that.

To me, whistling loudly is arrogant - it says either:

“I have the right to force you to listen to my whistling, even if it makes if difficult for you concentrate on what YOU want to think about.”

or

“I think my whistling is so amazing, that there is no way you will not enjoy listening to it”.

Either way - the mindset of a twat.

PlanDeRaccordement · 06/03/2020 12:36

I did not compare whistling to spitting. I contrasted them
Whistle- I do not mind
Spit- I hate
They are different.

LoisLittsLover · 06/03/2020 12:28

Men might whistle but women hum or sing I find (based on my very unscientific observations at work)

Thisismytimetoshine · 06/03/2020 12:27

Spitting is a whole different kettle of fish! There’s really no comparison.

PlanDeRaccordement · 06/03/2020 12:15

I don’t mind whistling or humming. What I hate is spitting.

HorseWithNoLang · 06/03/2020 11:59

Territory.

If you can hear the whistle you're on his.

Toxic prick. Pep Guardiola and his spitting - same thing. Like actual animals.

Thisismytimetoshine · 06/03/2020 11:53

Of all irritating / annoying things that men do this is not one that remotely bothers me! What’s the problem??

YouNeedToCalmDown · 06/03/2020 11:51

Yes! It's so annoying and they always look so chuffed with themselves, as if they expect you to applaud their 'skill'.

A neighbour does it when we are sitting outside. And he knows it. So fucking irritating.

iklboo · 06/03/2020 11:50

Why DO men - and it's almost always men - whistle tunelessly and inanely? What's the point? Is it because they want to be seen & their voices heard even if they're not speaking?

BobbinThreadbare123 · 06/03/2020 11:47

Yes, I hate it. It's a huge trigger for me as I have ASD. We've got a bunch of old guys at work who whistle randomly throughout the day and it's beginning to really upset me. It makes me jump. It's in the same bracket as car alarms to me.
I also think it's the sign of an empty mind.
