Lent Talk to be given by Rachel Mann on Radio 4 on Trans Identity

Rachel Mann was one of the witnesses on the recent Moral Maze programme. Here is the Radio Times blurb for the upcoming talk:

"Anglican priest Rachel Mann reflects on the events leading up to Jesus' crucifixion and on her journey of identity as a trans woman."

Does anyone else find that juxtaposition a little....I can't quite find the appropriate word... Shock

FFS. Trans Christmas next I expect. Jesus's birth - and my rebirth!

ErrolTheDragon · 04/03/2020 23:29

Some very odd ideas about women there and a quote from Foucault too.

Oh, that Foucault Hmm- I thought it was going to be the sensible one with the eponymous pendulum.

This is just a sub-editor, probably, being a bit gauche, amirite?

7Days · 04/03/2020 22:40

I'm actually quite shocked.

If Lent is about anything, it's about getting your head OUT of your arse. Your needs, your wants are to be minimised and weakened.

Imagine comparing yourself to Jesus. Does rev Mann serve an actual parish?

Thanks ThePurported. I mean, sort of thank you, because much mind-bleach now required. Could anyone read that poem and the self-absorbed twaddle and not feel a strong compulsion to slide away?

FleetsumNLangCleg · 04/03/2020 22:13

As my DH often says, "wrong on so many levels".

FleetsumNLangCleg · 04/03/2020 22:09

Such a smug voice in the trailers too...OMG like they knew they were the New God (narcissism writ large indeed). Will not listen to it, just could not. Of course BBC gives THIS a platform.

ThePurported
Well, thank you for that entertaining link.

Priceless

It is fascinating that as an Anglican Christian this person specifically rejects the doctrine of transubstantiation (that the bread and wine LITERALLY become the body and blood of Christ) and yet ....

Antibles · 04/03/2020 21:44

Same person who was involved in the trans baptisms controversy I think:

jen1wren · 04/03/2020 21:30

Oh God! Can't believe I'm thinking of contacting the catholic church cause I'm worried about the protection of children! The irony.
I was brought up Catholic.

jen1wren · 04/03/2020 21:26

Think I might write and complain. Lenten talk not in line with the lenten values of sacrifice, charity and selflessness. Instead focusing on the individual and importance of outward presentation.

Wonder if any Christian organisations would agree? Maybe the Roman Catholics?

"The body... is transformed in such a way that that body still bears the marks of woundedness, of exclusion, of loss, of being pushed out of the world"
This reminds me of feminist comments about Jesus and the crucifixion being very S&M-obsessed, this fixation on the pain and suffering and bodily distortion. And then we have the same here, where the surgical and/or hormonal 'transformation' of the body is seen as visible (assuming you don't pass) evidence of your suffering (and spiritual worth?), your very own stigmata. The link with Eve (and trying to claim that all females are somehow transed by god in Genesis), the neato flip with male Jesus being a clone of Mary, just makes it crystal clear here that the ultimate belief is that woman doesn't actually exist. We go from Adam, to Eve/Mary, and then back to Jesus, women were just an intermediary phase on that journey from the Old to the New testament, and hence one that your standard male can follow as well (and hence achieve godhood at the end!).

nauticant · 04/03/2020 21:18

To save anyone else the time, to me it was basically CoE burbling with more than normal ME ME ME (having a trans flavour).

iguanadonna · 04/03/2020 21:16

ThePurported, have you got any kind of link to that poem? In case any of my misogynistic woke bro happy clappy mates posts this stuff?

ThePurported · 04/03/2020 20:55

Can't listen now, but I hope it features the Reverend's poem about teenage girls and their fleshy pendulum arses. It's a great insight into this person's "journey".

Lordfrontpaw · 04/03/2020 20:44

I yelled at the bloody trailer. Gave the man at the dry cleaners a jump...

nauticant · 04/03/2020 20:41

Your 5 minute warning to start up Radio 4 so you can have a cathartic shouting at the radio experience.

FloralBunting · 26/02/2020 21:54

Around the turn of the century, I was dealing with post modern ramblings in the Evangelical church, and I very much view it now as one of the sand pits the Queer theorists were testing out their ideas before launching them into more 'high impact' arenas like the political nonsense we've been holding back in the past couple of years.

I know that if you haven't been religious, it probably all looks like nonsense anyway, but believe it or not, theological systems are quite internally consistent and logical once specific prepositions are accepted, and I've watched very conservative evangelical settings succumb to the theological 'queering' and in terms of the language of identity, rejection of objective truth and a whole lot of pressure to be kind to remain accepted, it looks very similar to what we've seen in the political and institutional spheres.

Clymene · 26/02/2020 20:00

It's weird that on the one hand Mann says to Kiri Tunks: "I mean, looking at you now, and I’m not judging you by genetic criteria, I’m actually just encountering you as a woman, as I hope you’re encountering me as a woman" so implying she is the same as Kiri.

But Mann has been on a journey And Tunks hasn't?

It's all very confusing

Languishingfemale · 26/02/2020 19:53

So we're queering children and primary schools and now queering Christianity. Have I got that right?

ErrolTheDragon · 26/02/2020 19:48

Now that would take a miracle!

janeskettle · 26/02/2020 19:42

ffs, maybe for Lent the Rev could give up self-bloody-obsession and take up thought-and-care-for-female-parishioners? Idk, just a thought.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/02/2020 19:19

Maybe that poster was thinking more along the lines of water into wine - or perhaps the idea of transsubstantiation.
