If anyone is interested, there's a conversation going on re access to the changing rooms on Duncan's Twitter.

Castrated males often still look like males and their presence in a female only changing room will very likely cause distress to female sexual assault survivors.

Statistically there are going to be more women who have suffered sexual assault needing to use female only facilities than there are going to be castrated males wanting to use them.

It therefore seems fair to prioritise the needs of these women (as there are substantially more of them) to feel safe over whatever needs the smaller number of castrated males have.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 22/02/2020 16:26

Part of the SNPs picture of a 'progressive' state has been seen to be ultra supportive of minorities - which in some cases can be good, but maybe has also been what's contributed to this blind, headlong rush to appease anyone who says they're oppressed. Legislation that's not thought through, barely even glanced at.

As you say, Figure, they are keen to increase any visible difference between the rUK and Scotland.

Lordfrontpaw · 21/02/2020 18:12

But who pushed it? I think everyone was distracted by the telephone masts disguised as crap trees and the giant pylons.

Figureof80 · 21/02/2020 18:07

What worries me is that the more exposure this Self ID lunacy gets South of the border the harder Nicola and her misogynistic advisers will push for the GRA reform to go through in Scotland. Anything that highlights a difference between Scotland and rest of Uk is useful for their drive towards a second referendum.

littlbrowndog · 21/02/2020 17:40

Not one person I know in Scotland believes this stuff

But it’s kinda hidden.

They don’t know what is happening behind close doors

Datun · 21/02/2020 17:38

Being a post operative transwoman doesn't stop them being an arse or a bully or violent. And it certainly doesn't stop them being entitled. A post-operative transwoman is still equating womanhood with sexist stereotypes.

Furthermore, it, yet again, completely ignores the women whose space it is. Women who have an involuntary reaction to men because of any number of reasons, whether that reaction is mild or severe, are not going to take into account the presence or absence of a penis.

Why should any woman or girl have to sit there pondering whether or not there is a penis under the clothing in order to decide whether or not that piece of information makes the slightest bit of difference.

In my opinion, it's probs more likely that, in my spaces, I'm going to encounter an entitled, arrogant man, rather than a rapist.

No thanks.

Fieldofgreycorn · 21/02/2020 17:30

Oh Scottish dialect.

Lordfrontpaw · 21/02/2020 16:18

My sister told me that she’s met up with her SIL.

‘Aye, am a TERUF now...’ she proudly told her. My sister didn’t have a clue but she knows now...

LizA49 · 21/02/2020 15:18

@lordfrontpaw I agree, I don’t get how it’s gained any traction either. There’s a lot of theories about infiltration though, particularly of the snp.

It’s all gone under the radar for so long, but the attention it’s getting now is doing a brilliant job of showing it up for the nonsense, and the danger, that it is.

And there’s been some really courageous female msps speaking up, and getting lots of abuse for doing just so. Some labour ones too now. I spotted from Johann Lamonts feed she is very gc, and indeed it was her that was photographed and called a t**f by a creepy bloke on Twitter the other day.
I don’t think they’ll get their legislation through. I think there will be enough dissenters to bring the whole house of cards down. Just like the named person legislation.

Lordfrontpaw · 21/02/2020 14:46

I just don’t get how all this nonsense is trotting through in Scotland right now. Duncan is your archetypal no-nonsense gruff Scot. Who are these people?

happydappy2 · 21/02/2020 14:45

If post op transwomen use the womens changing rooms, that environment becomes mixed sex. No thanks. Women & girls need single sex provision. There can be no blurring of boundaries here-if a post op transwoman doesn't wish to use the male facilities they need to arrange a 3rd space. I don't think thats unkind, its practical & gives a fair outcome for everyone.

Qcng · 21/02/2020 09:35

2Rebeca
I have no objection to males who have sufficient gender dysphoria to have their penis removed using a female changing room... It's intact males with male testosterone levels and functioning penises who have no place in women's changing rooms

The problem here is how do you know?
How on earth do you know which TW has had "the op" and which hasn't?

Some pass unbelievably well, such as Blair white and Nikki Tutorials and others, BW is very open about not having had the op and she doesn't seem to want it. I think most women wouldn't bat an eyelid if BW or NT was trying on clothes in the MnS women's changing rooms (haa and I bet they'd both really suit the Per Una range)

Some do not pass at all, eg 6foot with a deep voice, who have had the op.

You can't go around asking TW on entrance to women's spaces "do you have a penis?" You just can't.

It's a real shame the GRA doesn't focus on this aspect more.
I used to think that only TW who have had "the op" should be granted a GRC. But then ethically it would force TW into surgery they don't want. Now I just think the GRA is an utter farce.

The only solution is no TW at all, in any women-only spaces, but third mixed-sex spaces for transpeople to use, and everyone and anyone who is happy to use mixed sex.

littlbrowndog · 21/02/2020 09:24

Barracker 👏💪💪💪

ThinEndoftheWedge · 21/02/2020 09:20

The problem is that, even if most women were happy to have men with their penis removed in the women's changing room, there is no way of knowing this when the person walks in. Penis or not they are normally easily recognised as men

This - also can’t tell in toilets, refuges, dormitory accommodation, hospital wards etc...

Agree with KenDodd- won’t affect male anatomical, physiological and biomechanical advantages in sport.

testing987654321 · 21/02/2020 00:37

Brilliant Barracker (as usual!).

The problem is that, even if most women were happy to have men with their penis removed in the women's changing room, there is no way of knowing this when the person walks in. Penis or not they are normally easily recognised as men.

That's why we don't check genitals at changing room doors, we don't need to.

buckeejit · 21/02/2020 00:18

@Barracker Grin. I hear what you're saying. Personally, I don't think I would mind anyone who had had penis removal within female changing rooms, but I respect that not everyone might be accepting of that.

Self ID is definitely not the answer here

Barracker · 20/02/2020 23:45

Dear men
Please don't bother removing your testicles and penis if you imagine it will make your presence more palatable to me when I am naked. It will not, and you will be disappointed. I will not distinguish between intact men and castrated men, and I will not consider the amputation of your genitalia renders you magically somehow 'like me'.
Keep your tackle, or don't, it's neither here nor there to me, but I remain the opposite sex to you and my barriers to you remain intact regardless of what futile scrotal origami you attempt.

This was a public service announcement on behalf of the sex who are not actually just dickless men, surprisingly.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 20/02/2020 22:17

My problem with that argument (someone post penis removal) is that I don't want to encourage anyone down the route of dangerous surgery on a previously healthy body. I think there should be far, far more treatment and support for gender dysphoria, and more research into the effects of PTSD and trauma.

Binterested · 20/02/2020 22:11

I think that even the presence of a GRC plus surgery (which almost no transwomen have gone through and certainly not something the current bunch of activists have bothered to go through), there is no automatic entitlement to single sex spaces.

The law is badly worded, presumably because it was never envisaged for use in this ludicrous situation. But I think the single sex exemption might still be able to be upheld even in a surgery plus GRC situation if it is deemed proportionate to the aims of the service.

darktriad · 20/02/2020 22:05

A close friend of mine has had the surgery and now suffers long-term anxiety and paranoia because she is aware she doesn't really cut it as a woman. (not to mention the physical suffering) Happy to share my space with her (and refer to her as a woman) but self ID, no thanks

KenDodd · 20/02/2020 21:59

Oh, and penis or no penis, I don't think they should be competing against women in sport.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 20/02/2020 21:57

To be fair, for lots of women, the penis is the problem.
People often post on here how they "don't want penises in the female changing room".
I think he does get it somewhat, though.

KenDodd · 20/02/2020 21:46

@2Rebecca

I agree.
The only problem for these trans women is that so few of them pass, almost all of them (and I speak from experience, I've known a lot) still just look like cross dressing men. I feel quite sad for them really, they've had painful and drastic surgery, commiting to a lifetime of medication and you can still spot them a mile off.

2Rebecca · 20/02/2020 21:36

I have no objection to males who have sufficient gender dysphoria to have their penis removed using a female changing room. I don't feel they are a physical threat to me and they're unlikely to be having a wank after watching me in my undies. It's intact males with male testosterone levels and functioning penises who have no place in women's changing rooms, no matter how much make up they wear. They can use the men's changing room and re-educate the men.

WrathofFaeKlopp · 20/02/2020 21:16

PerfectParrot

Perhaps he's still evolving in his understanding, or perhaps he thinks the current legal balance is about right

Yes the current legal obligation he has (and we all have), is to accept transpeople who have a GRC.
He has to say this publicly.

Like Ricky, he knows.
