Brisbane car fire: Ex-rugby player and three children die in 'horrific' incident https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-australia-48778156

What kind of man sets fire to his children? In the DM, he is described as a loving father. AngryAngry

Men’s violence is often framed as a mental health issue rather than a moral issue

We need to recognise that men use violence to achieve their goals and uphold their values. Violence is never random or accidental - it is enforcement

AnyFucker · 20/02/2020 11:26

misogyny offers no explanation for the murder of boy children

You have no idea what misogyny means

Thymelord · 20/02/2020 10:57

The words you chose to use to respond to Rufus say an awful lot about you "Plan. "no need to get upset" and "why don't you scream* at them". Very loaded language. It makes your intent quite clear, in my opinion.

littlbrowndog · 20/02/2020 10:43

Plan did you read the link I posted up above ?

It’s the ultimate control.

nettie434 · 20/02/2020 10:41

Not sure what is meant by “demographic has changed of late” the study is less than 3yrs old

I read that as referring to the demographics on MN PlanDeRaccordement. I haven’t read the thread on AIBU so can’t comment further.

The study you linked to included all instances of child murder. Unfortunately, because of the way data is collected across different countries, the study cannot differentiate between family annihilation and the larger numbers of child homicides. Posters are questioning the usefulness of highlighting a 50:50 split in all child homicides when the thread is specifically about family annihilation.

PlanDeRaccordement · 20/02/2020 10:38

Yes the murder was horrific and the actions of the father/murderer were definitely unhinged. Since he stabbed himself to death, he was probably mentally unstable.
It reminds me of that family homicide where the mothers drove themselves and their children all off a cliff into the ocean.

How can we as a society not notice when a parent or parents are at breaking point? What causes this?

PlanDeRaccordement · 20/02/2020 10:29

Rufus, I said PPs...as in prior posters plural. No need to get so upset. And this thread is also linked to another thread. It’s not just about family homicides. Posters can bring up related topics. Others have mentioned misogyny for example....why don’t you scream at them and tell them this thread is not about misogyny? That’s less relevant than what I posted because misogyny offers no explanation for the murder of boy children.

There is nothing wrong with posting a systematic review of world wide scientific studies that show the statistics of who kills children. Family homicides which include child murders are tracked within these studies.

littlbrowndog · 20/02/2020 10:25

The murderer also tried to stop people trying to help the children get out of the car

littlbrowndog · 20/02/2020 10:23

Yes rufus. You did not

NearlyGranny · 20/02/2020 10:22

This is a full-on family annihilation, not only the children were murdered but their mother, too, and the perpetrator committed suicide on the spot.

He was seen filling a can of petrol and it seems he lurked waited outside his PiL's house where his wife had taken herself and the children for safety, jumped into the car passenger seat as she was taking the children on the school run and sloshed the petrol over his family. Police haven't released details of how the fire started but zippo lighters are cheap and readily available.

Hannah managed to get out, alight, yelling that 'he' had thrown petrol on her. A passerby tried to get the children out and received burns in the unsuccessful attempt. He was out of the car and stabbing himself to death.

Those, people, are not the actions of a loving father.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 20/02/2020 10:14

And I haven’t fucking said that women killing their children is irrelevant

So don’t imply i have

littlbrowndog · 20/02/2020 10:14

Yeah anyfucker. Just one

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 20/02/2020 10:13

This thread is specifically about family annihilation

It may well change to women killing their children..in fact a thread about it and the reasons why it might happen might be interesting

But if you are unable to keep to the topic it might be an idea to not post irrelevant facts until they do indeed become relevant

AnyFucker · 20/02/2020 10:08

We can't have just one thread that specifically highlights male violence towards their families, can we ? Not one.

PlanDeRaccordement · 20/02/2020 10:05

Not sure what is meant by “demographic has changed of late” the study is less than 3yrs old?

PlanDeRaccordement · 20/02/2020 10:01

I posted the British Medical Journal study on child homicides because several PPs stated opinions that are not factually. Statements like it is usually the father who kills a child, that the number of women who kill their child “is vanishingly small” etc etc.

But I guess it is typical for PPs to extrapolate this tragedy and claim to “it’s usually fathers who kill their children” and when I point out that is not based on facts to then turn 180degrees and claim whether fathers or mothers kill their children is “irrelevant”.

It’s all relevant.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 20/02/2020 09:35

Its just horrendous and as someone said its going to have far reaching effects for anyone close to the women and children

Not sure why statistics that are unrelated to family annihilation are being quoted but probably best to ignore anything irrelevant

nettie434 · 20/02/2020 09:17

Statistically it is actually 50/50 mothers and fathers killing their children.

Thanks for the link to that review PlandeRaccordement. Agree with Killbranan that there may be different patterns in terms of age/gender of children and parents if the data were better across all countries. I always thought that mothers were more likely to kill babies (especially in the circumstances mentioned by Kilbranan of trying to conceal birth etc) but that the study done by David Wilson and colleagues showed more ‘family annihilators’ were men.

Clymene · 20/02/2020 08:59

Yes I think the demographic has changed markedly of late

OP posts:
Thymelord · 19/02/2020 18:23

Horrific, that poor woman and her children.

I posted on the AIBU thread but had to give up. I find it difficult to stay calm and play nicely in the face of such disgusting internalised misogny. I would love to understand why these women do it. Why the need to white knight for men on every bloody thread.

I fully agree with you GCAcademic. It didn't used to be like this, it's handmaiden paradise now.

Kilbranan · 19/02/2020 18:19

plan I would have thought pressure on women to produce sons rather than daughters is a big part of that. Also women with PND/ puerpal psychosis, concealed pregnancies with young/ poor mothers etc
That study points out lack of detailed breakdown eg age of child at time of deaths which might help determine if some of the factors I have mentioned above are likely to be relevant

Also important to distinguish difference between murder of a child and murder of whole family

anonacfr · 19/02/2020 18:16

I haven't read the other thread but I saw the story this morning and the details are truly horrific.
His social media was filled with pictures of his children and him gushing about them being his entire life.
And he goes on and inflicts the most painful death possible on them?

There are no words.

Apparently there was a logged domestic violence incident a month ago but it wasn't followed through?

Poor family... and he did it in front of his wife's parents' house...

PlanDeRaccordement · 19/02/2020 18:11

“Data from 33 countries distinguishing the perpetrators of parental homicides of children under the age of 18 years showed that mothers committed just over half of all parental homicides (median 54.7%, IQR 36.7–68.8); in high-income countries, the median percentage was 44.4% (IQR 36.7–66.7), in the East Asia and Pacific region, 64.6% (IQR 59.0–69.3), in the Americas, 15.4% (IQR 13.3–17.4), in Africa, 88.6% (IQR 71.1–100.0), in low-income and middle-income Europe, 60.4% (IQR 45.8–75.0) and in the Mediterranean region, 7.4% (IQR 0.0–14.8). ”
