Deed poll process needs 'attention' to ensure trans people are not being outed, says High Court judge

The process of changing your name by deed poll “needs close attention” to ensure that trans people are not being outed, a High Court judge has said.

Master Victoria McCloud says the process for changing a name by deed poll is "very public" because High Court staff publish old and new names on the internet via a notice in the London Gazette, the official newspaper of the Government.

She says the process can lead to people who have changed their name as a result of changing their gender being outed and has suggested that the issue should be drawn to the attention of a senior judge.

Master McCloud, who herself transitioned from male to female and changed her name, outlined her concerns in a ruling, which has been published online, relating to four people who had changed their names....

Its like every part of the decisions making arms of society have now been infiltrated by trans rights activists.

How do we keep up with what they are doing letting alone stopping them. Angry

From the article it implies that when you name change it is then published in the London Gazette, ie what the old name was, what the new name is.

But only if you have followed the Enrollment of Deeds(?) process. (Does this make it more legal than not going through this process?)

So the Judge is saying if you do this you will be "outed".

I cant track down the court case this came up in, but it is supposedly online.

But you don't have to do it this way. See:

www.deedpoll.org.uk/IsADeedPollRegisteredAnywhere.html

It appears that trans people, like anyone else, can change their name by deed poll & not enrol it so there's no publicity.

What's the problem, or have I misunderstood something?

Are trans rights activists saying transpeople should be allowed to do these things?

It appears that way. So...

Surely trans people deserve rights?

So are you saying anybody who says they are transgender deserves MORE rights than people who don't self ID as the opposite sex?

Aesopfable · 18/02/2020 19:30

This whole outing is nonsense anyway. We can tell.

What is the policy behind the existing rules making name changes public? There will be one. Presumably it is to avoid people escaping responsibilities/embarking on fraud/ deceiving others. Are trans rights activists saying transpeople should be allowed to do these things?

Instead, I want to know why it was fine for everybody else's name changes to be public, but not for those people who self ID as the opposite sex.

This ^ 100% this ^

I want to talk about the Master's ruffle...

Instead, I want to know why it was fine for everybody else's name changes to be public, but not for those people who self ID as the opposite sex.

...why would you want to stop trans rights activists? Surely trans people deserve rights?
