And has effectively also said that Women's Place and the LGB Alliance (essentially groups for women, gays and lesbians to meet and discuss women's, gay and lesbian issues) are hate groups and them meeting are hate crimes

Thread by Karen Ingala Smith:

threadreaderapp.com/thread/1227261651138809857.html

Snippets:

"I’ve just rejoined Labour. I’m from a northern working-class background. I’ve worked in specialist services for women subjected to men’s violence violence for 30yrs. I believe women’s sex based rights & protections matter. Do you want me expelled?"

"Since 2016, on International Women's Day since 2016 your sister party MP has read out the names of all UK women killed by men since the previous IWD. Thus ensuring their names are recorded in Hansard. She could not do this without my work." #ExpelMe

"I spoke on a panel at @ WomansPlaceUK #WomansLib2020 about what needs to happen to end men’s violence against women. I said I didn’t think there was the will. I didn’t say that prospective Labour leaders won’t even define woman. I should have." #ExpelMe

(Jess Phillips is the MP who reads out the names of women killed by men)

Mossyrock · 11/02/2020 21:52

I feel like that too, Kittens and Ereshkigal. Ditto the Guardian.

HPFA · 11/02/2020 21:51

@JustTurtlesAllTheWayDown

I think I will vote for Ian Murray first, then Dr Rosena, then Angela Rayner, then Dawn Butler. As much as this from Angela is bad, Burgon must still go last.

I'm actually very sad about this as I think Starmer/Rayner was a good combo but it will now be overshadowed. I think it may be a case of misplaced loyalty as was not challenging for the leadership itself instead of RLB.

People on this thread are talking about "Labour doing this and that..." and I completely understand but it's actually a group within Labour that are now actively trying to destroy the party from the inside rather than give up control.

Mayomaynot · 11/02/2020 21:49

Time for a new party.

LouHotel · 11/02/2020 21:47

@VortexofBloggery Hmmm I don’t know, I reckon Starmer will have a wishy reply about labour needing to be a broad church and I’m going out on a limb to say Thornberry will hold out.

Mossyrock · 11/02/2020 21:43

For anyone unfamiliar with Women's Place UK these are their five core demands. According to Rayner et al. this is what a hate group looks like:

"1. Respectful and evidence-based discussion about the impact of the proposed changes to the Gender Recognition Act to be allowed to take place and for women’s voices to be heard.

  1. The principle of women-only spaces to be upheld – and where necessary extended.
  1. A review of how the exemptions in the Equality Act (which allow for single sex services, or requirements that only a woman can apply for a job such as in a domestic violence refuge) are being applied in practice.
  1. Government to consult with women’s organisations on how self-declaration would impact on women-only services and spaces.
  1. Government to consult on how self-declaration will impact upon data gathering – such as crime, employment, pay and health statistics – and monitoring of sex-based discrimination such as the gender pay gap."

Ereshkigalangcleg · 11/02/2020 21:42

Yes I feel exactly the same kittens

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 11/02/2020 21:42

It's very disconcerting watching an institution that you grew up just assuming you'd always support veering so far off course that not only can you no longer support them, you're kind of hoping nobody else does either. I never thought I'd find myself looking at the Labour Party and thinking "I wouldn't let you run me a bath, never mind run the country".

VortexofBloggery · 11/02/2020 21:39

I'll throw in a prediction, louhotel, they'll all sign up to it. By morning.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 11/02/2020 21:39

Has the Labour Party completely forgotten that it needs to attract voters?

Being serious for a moment, do the kind of people who push policies like this even care about winning elections? I suppose it's possible that they're so isolated in their bubble that they genuinely don't realize that most of the country doesn't really believe TWAW in terms of post operative transsexuals, much less that anyone who identifies as a women on alternate Tuesdays is, but I think it's more likely that they don't give a single solitary fuck what most voters think and whether they win elections or not, they just want to be the more righteous force in all the land.

So, yeah, teenagers, or at least identifying as such well into adulthood.

Thingybob · 11/02/2020 21:34

Has this link been posted explaining the thinking behind the petition?

tribunemag.co.uk/2020/02/the-labour-campaign-for-trans-rights

I don't want to be unkind to Torr but how can anyone take this person seriously?

LouHotel · 11/02/2020 21:32

Is their a reputable source of where you can find the information on how much female support labour need to win?

For instance in the states the dems need something like 90% of the black vote to be in contention, we must be a significant voting block for them.

DeeZastris · 11/02/2020 21:29

Has the Labour Party completely forgotten that it needs to attract voters? It would be funny if it wasn’t so heartbreaking.

StandWithYou · 11/02/2020 21:27

Careful Ereshkigalangcleg that’s the new health policy you’re dissing.

Also with ChattyLion it’s amazing how many people are reacting to this - don’t think it’s a good move from candidates to lose party members in this way.

UpfieldHatesWomen · 11/02/2020 21:26

Sorry I don't have much to add, but just wanted to say how shocking I find this pledge. It reads like something from a cult, to pledge belief in the idea of feminine and masculine souls with no debate (or reference to science), that essentially women are to have no voice regarding how any new legislation affects them because that would be considered transphobic, and libelling feminist organisations. I hope WPUK sue. I just can't believe this is the state of the Labour party.

ThePurported · 11/02/2020 21:23

This is putting the feet to the fire of everyone running for leader - let’s see who holds out.

^
You can't just parrot slogans and hope that the mob won't turn against you. The Labour TRAs have started taking names, and saying "TWAW" will no longer get you off the hook.

What's it to be, Thornberry, Nandy and Starmer?
Are women's and LGB rights organisations 'transphobic'?

TalaxuArmiuna · 11/02/2020 21:23

re: point 5 I would like to query -

are all trans men also subject to misogyny and patriarchal oppression? I would say yes they are.

UpperLowercaseSymbolNumber · 11/02/2020 21:22

The Labour Party simply doesn’t learn. Even if you don’t give a shit about women’s rights have they not worked out that this sort of stuff is at the heart of the woke identity politics that plays so badly with the electorate? Dominic Cummings must be rubbing his hands with glee at all this.

I’m a member, recently rejoined but fuck it #expelme if you’re going down this road.

theflushedzebra · 11/02/2020 21:21

It really reads like it was written by a bunch of 17 year olds in the pub, on the back of a beermat, after too many pints of cider and black

Googling the names of some of the founding signatories would confirm this is not a million miles from the truth.

theflushedzebra · 11/02/2020 21:15

Indeed it is LouHotel - from the beeb article:

The other Labour leadership contenders, Sir Keir Starmer, Lisa Nandy and Emily Thornberry have been contacted for a response.

Let's see which other leadership candidates support expelling all these Labour women, just because they don't believe TWAW. Let's see which ones support the expulsion of women like Karen Ingala Smith? Or Ruth Serwotka?

Kit19 · 11/02/2020 21:13

Are they having a competition with the Lib Dem’s to see how many female voters they can piss off?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 11/02/2020 21:13

I agree WPUK and LGBAlliance need to take some form of legal action.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 11/02/2020 21:11

It really reads like it was written by a bunch of 17 year olds in the pub, on the back of a beermat, after too many pints of cider and black

It reminds me of the batshit Action For Trans Health manifesto:

ChattyLion · 11/02/2020 21:10

I’m sad and shocked that people in the Labour Party can be so unbelievably stupid, misogynist, homophobic and authoritarian as to support this fuckwittery. I just don’t recognise Labour in its current guise and as a Labour voter I am about to write to my Labour MP to say exactly that.

On the other hand, especially given these tossers have clearly thought they could frame up LGB Alliance and WPUK on grounds of thoughtcrime, I have a horrified fascination with watching how quickly and publicly this is playing out as a total, utter peakmachine.
I am particularly looking forward to this bringing LGB Alliance and WPUK and Maya’s case into household name status.. Smile

ALittleBitofVitriol · 11/02/2020 21:08

"Comrades"

cringe
Bourgeois children high on their own farts and self-importance.

Imagine writing this and thinking 'that'll shut up the wimmins, yep, right side of history over here!
