This social networking site is using AI and biometrics to ensure its users are only girls.
But guess what? It can't recognise the users gender identity so screens out trans girls. Who woulda thunk it?

"Giggle" ?

Who remembers "Menschn" Grin

Lordfrontpaw · 10/02/2020 08:38

I sense a lawsuit or st least a sad faced newspaper article.

When voice recognition for a bank kept not recognising a particular person it was reported in the paper.

TheMemoryLingers · 10/02/2020 08:36

An app for women called 'Giggle'? No, thanks.

QuentinWinters · 10/02/2020 07:47

I just find odd the hoo ha about this app when so many apps/devices can do bad things with your data.
I wondered whether the people who wrote that article are subconsciously threatened by the idea females could have a man free space and so are looking for more blatant reasons the app is bad

I’ll just add this to the list of “things my daughters are never getting while I still have control over their devices”.

Bezalelle · 09/02/2020 22:53

Any number of things, from selling it to private data companies on the least sinister end of the spectrum, all the way to selling it to governments for nefarious reasons.

Isn't it obvious? I'm not sure if you're being purposefully disingenuous.

QuentinWinters · 09/02/2020 20:02

What do you think Google are doing with your android phone facial recognition beza?

The more worrying thing is surely the collection of biometric data.

*the site is called giggle?

ick*

Yep.

ErrolTheDragon · 08/02/2020 22:25

If the site wants to detect 'gender identity' rather than actual sex, maybe they should ditch AI systems and hire Layla Moran?

BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 08/02/2020 21:40

Giggle says the science is sound. “It’s Bio-Science, not pseudo-science like phrenology,” the website declares.

Except it sounds a lot like pseudo-science.

Oh my god! They're redefining what science is now, so that it fits in with their ideology.

FannyCann · 08/02/2020 20:50

Well initially I giggled at the obvious flaws for a "girls only" app.

Then I read this...

"The app’s privacy policy is also a cause for concern, however. As one Twitter user pointed out, Giggle can collect a ton of personal information, including peoples’ images, location, preferences, and browsing data. Giggle is able to then share that information with third-party websites and services, including facial recognition providers, chat room providers, and marketers. It also collects sensitive information including peoples’ “sexual practices or sex life,” their criminal records, and their private health information.

Sex, Gender, Privacy? What a dilemma.

scotsheather · 08/02/2020 20:19

Don't know specifically about this app but I definitely saw a credible source saying black women get misread due to their complexion, possibly bone structure which is closer to a white male than the software is designed for. Again I'd be wary of an app that insists on a selfie never mind real name so its red flag galore so far.

OhHolyJesus · 08/02/2020 19:53

I don't know even where to start with this.

How about we all get offline and talk in person as much as possible and stay away from apps and websites that use gender in place of sex....

Oh wait.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 08/02/2020 19:40

It doesn't exclude boys/men.

The FAQs used to have the Q "Are trans girls welcome on giggle?"

A: Of course! giggle is for all girls! Due to the gender-verification software that giggle uses, trans-girls will experience trouble with being verified. It's simply a matter of two technologies not working together. giggle HQ will gladly assist with the on-boarding process in an equally fun and modern way. If you're having trouble being verified, please contact us so we can help get you giggling!

An App for girls, that excludes boys - does what it says on the tin

Sharing all the extra info looks risky though

OvaHere · 08/02/2020 19:21

It's amusing how much this app has annoyed some sections of the populous and the very predictable 'lets destroy it' attitude it's provoked.

However I'd be a bit wary of an app that stored that kind of info about women so proceed with caution regardless of what the TRAs think of it.

ErrolTheDragon · 08/02/2020 19:16

Again, that is likely to be down to the diversity (or lack thereof) of the training data of some early systems.

MoleSmokes · 08/02/2020 18:26

scotsheather - "I'm sure I heard black women often get mistaken ad male in fr software. Sounds a racist app as well as transphobia."

The website includes advertising images that include black women so that would be an own-goal if true.

Any evidence that this particular app is so poorly designed that it mistakes black women for men?

scotsheather · 08/02/2020 17:20

I'm sure I heard black women often get mistaken ad male in fr software. Sounds a racist app as well as transphobia.

ErrolTheDragon · 08/02/2020 17:19

I'm assuming it allows in transmen?

That might depend on whether the training set included people with facial hair.

stillathing · 08/02/2020 17:18

I'm assuming it allows in transmen? So it couldn't be accused of transphobia?

Clymene · 08/02/2020 17:13

I don't think the author of the article understands what AI and biometrics are.

I might sign up, although I don't need a room or travel mate. Perhaps this is what lesbian dating apps need too?
