Oh, my word. When women finally get the chance to talk about what matters to them, when we have a group of women who agree on what a woman is - the scope and depth of the issues we face is breathtaking. There is so much to be done.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 07/02/2020 13:41

Relevant section of the programme starts at 16.30, listening now!

Michelleoftheresistance · 07/02/2020 13:27

Why would TW need the right of reply on a programme about females and issues specifically affecting females, about a female's liberation conference? Confused

midclegs · 07/02/2020 13:07

It's up - listening. @AmericanSlang - you were fab, esp liked your comments about wanting to see the girls protesting outside come in with us, I felt v sorry for them.

ThePurported · 07/02/2020 12:25

Bugger, I missed this. Come on BBC, all the other R4 programmes from this morning are already up!

SadlyMissTaken · 07/02/2020 12:20

The guest on the Today prog was a bit non committal on that point I thought. WH sounds fab. Look forward to listening later.

Melroses · 07/02/2020 12:19

It does seem to take a tad longer than you expect for them to put it up these days, but usually by 2pm

nauticant · 07/02/2020 12:03

Normally it whould be up by now midclegs. You'll need to try www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000dymy later. I'd expect it to be up very soon.

Helmetbymidnight · 07/02/2020 11:53

I missed this, but will try and catch up.

Interesting the change in editorial on Radio 4?

On 6 o'clock news last night they talked about the Stephanie Hayden case, is it? And then in a separate item talked about the Oxford Council being sued by the 13 yrs old.

Then on the today show this morning, they asked the university if women's meetings were allowed to take place about excluding 'anatomical males' and the university guy said absolutely yes.

A sea-change maybe...

midclegs · 07/02/2020 11:51

Does anyone know when we can listen to it via playback?

ScrimshawTheSecond · 07/02/2020 11:47

Ooh, this sounds like a tonic! Thanks for posting, will listen later. Women's voices, loud and clear - how utterly refreshing.

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 07/02/2020 11:40

The Twitter TRAs are annoyed that transwomen weren't given a right of reply after so many lies were made about transwomen in the piece...

I didn't actually hear transwomen mentioned, did anyone else?

cwg1 · 07/02/2020 11:39

Huge congratulations and thanks to WPUK and all the other groups and women - including, of course, FWR vipers, who have worked and worked and pulled and pulled. Great recognition for all your efforts Flowers

AmericanSlang - you were fab!

AmericanSlang · 07/02/2020 11:38

Thank youBlush I'm a bit embarrassed, being a rather inarticulate lurker, but the Woman's Hour interviewer asked how I got "here" (ie the conference) so I told her! I was totally oblivious to so much of the stuff going on until I arrived at this board, and I'm very grateful to all the intelligent and articulate women here who woke me up

SurpriseSparDay · 07/02/2020 11:30

Well done, AmericanSlang. Star

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 07/02/2020 11:24

Thank You AmericanSlang I hope your advertising finds us some new recruits Grin

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 07/02/2020 11:18

It's incredible how unusual it was to hear women being able to speak, uninterrupted.

The "trans" word was only mentioned about 2 or three times, almost in passing, too.

AmericanSlang · 07/02/2020 11:13

I was the one who mentioned Mumsnet FWR! - you lot did literally re-radicalise me (at the age of 52!) and led me to check out Jane Clare Jones and many other clever, funny, articulate feminists :)

ChattyLion · 07/02/2020 11:05

They sound like excellent interviewees, looking forward to listening to this!

ArranUpsideDown · 07/02/2020 11:03

A quick glance at Twitter shows that there are some very positive comments about the coverage.

And that Sophie Scott and her colleagues are coming under a fair amount of pressure for their courage.

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 07/02/2020 10:59

Well my goodness me, that was wonderful. Helen Joyce was magnificent, and Sophie Scott too. So many points calmly mentioned to pique listeners' interest.

I'm going to give JG the benefit of the doubt and suggest that she did it that way on purpose because #balance.

This is likely, in my view.

Well done to all concerned!

FaFoutis · 07/02/2020 10:58

I heard this, it gave me actual hope.
Thank you Women's Hour!

Melroses · 07/02/2020 10:51

Very enjoyable and uplifting piece - really worth listening over and over again.

WH looking at sex and gender in the future

AbsintheFriends · 07/02/2020 10:42

Part of what made it so effective, honest and informative was that it was actually all about women's concerns and issues being dismissed as bigotry. So JG wasn't really able to do that 'balance' ('some might say...' etc) thing without demonstrating the problem. It meant both women were able to speak without frustrating interruption and derailment.
