www.nbcnews.com/feature/nbc-out/jameela-jamil-comes-out-queer-amid-criticism-her-role-hbo-n1131141

“Actress Jameela Jamil formally came out as queer Wednesday in response to critics who attacked her role in a new HBO Max competition series, claiming her judging a voguing show wouldn't be representative of the black LGBTQ community in which voguing originated.”

And it seems the community are doubting her motivations, with IW questioning if she is in fact queer as she has a boyfriend (linked below), who then comes under fire themselves for bisexual, pansexual, etc. ‘erasure’.

I had to look up ‘queer’ to understand how Jameela was applying that label, so looked up PinkNews. Not terribly helpful but in essence “queer has become a useful umbrella term for some sexual and gender minorities who do not fit into the traditional categories around gender identity and sexual orientation.”
From Twitter I read it as “It’s usually an umbrella term for LGBT+ when someone doesn't want to disclose their sexuality/can't identify with a singular label but knows they aren't straight.”

Here you go, Twitter falls for it. SHE’S GOT A BOYFRIEND. You don’t think it’s odd she comes out as “queer” after being criticised for possibly taking a gay person’s place on a show? #Mugs #Coincidence #Gayface

I was also interested to learn the origin of vogue “Many felt that despite Jamil's comments, her place as a judge was inappropriate as voguing has its roots in the LGBTQ community. The dance style was part of drag competitions popularized by queer people of color and became ingrained in the community's culture.”

I am saddened that Jameela as a woman of colour has to take a third label to qualify for being a judge, and it seems a turf war could be breaking out.
Could this be the start of the backlash within the LGBTQI+ as the umbrella is now so vast, virtually all of us stand under it?

Women seem to come off disproportionately badly in these public shamings unfortunately.

nauticant · 06/02/2020 09:10

Here's another go at a definition. Queer seems to be people who are outside the category of:
Those who identify as being 100% heterosexual, identify as being 100% cisgender, adopt a 100% stereotypical gender presentation, and are attracted to people of the opposite sex who are 100% heterosexual, identify as being 100% cisgender, adopt a 100% stereotypical gender presentation, and that attraction involves a 100% vanilla sex life.

The real workable definition of queer would seem to be someone who says they are. (Unless the guardians of queerness say otherwise.)

Clymene · 06/02/2020 09:10

I don't think she's bisexual. I think she's just trying to make herself appear relevant.

stillathing · 06/02/2020 09:08

Now humming the tune from the musical on the it crowd that Jen tried to sing ‘willies, willies, I love willies..’

Watching that almost killed me as I had a laughing fit so hard I couldn't breathe. Genuinely scary!

It will be interesting to see if JJ is allowed to be queer as she's a female in her 30s.

TirisfalPumpkin · 06/02/2020 09:06

I’m no fan of Jameela or ‘queer’, but bisexuals are allowed to have boyfriends. I interpreted it as that, although a theythem saga might be entertaining.

AudacityOfHope · 06/02/2020 09:04

Same as me @stillathing

I admired her for her stance on the diet industry etc but she's become so hyper-aware of any perceived slight of any kind against anyone that it's exhausting watching her. God know what it feels like to be her. She's appointed herself as a guardian of trans people, and now that's being called into question she's disappearing instead of engaging.

It's obviously easier to preach from the sidelines than actually get into the messy muddy conversation and work out what your real POV is, not what will give you a fawning tween Insta audience.

Michelleoftheresistance · 06/02/2020 09:00

Queer, like Pan, has become a useful word for females being bullied as a means of trying to fit into a group the bullies don't target.

When people are afraid and harassed, they lie.

Lordfrontpaw · 06/02/2020 08:58

Oooh kinky😊

stillathing · 06/02/2020 08:56

This is pretty funny.

I do/did like JJ but had to unfollow her on twitter in the end because she got quite nasty. I really try to keep following celebrities who I used to like when they come out as believing in gender ideology because I want to avoid an echo chamber. But they invariably become nasty, almost like they are reading from a script.

Re queer, I suspect I am queer because I don't fancy people for their male gender. In other words I'm a dick fetishist. Don't kink shame me.

Kit19 · 06/02/2020 08:50

there was a thread on twitter from a university lecturer who asked his students to define Queer and was completely agog at the answers. I wish I could find it - it was just full of the most bizzare things but it seemed to boil down to "anyone and everyone who is vaguley different to me"

Lordfrontpaw · 06/02/2020 08:50

She does realise that her tribe won’t be interested in her as she ages and isn’t a young and beautiful woman anymore - unless she has an amazing talent (think Liza, Kylie, Streisand...). I can’t think of any other older women like her.

ItsLateHumpty · 06/02/2020 08:49

Lord tut tut - who's not kept up with their letters Grin

PinkNews.... “queer has become a useful umbrella term for some sexual and gender minorities who do not fit into the traditional categories around gender identity and sexual orientation.”

Rando on Twitter "It’s usually an umbrella term for LGBT+ when someone doesn't want to disclose their sexuality/can't identify with a singular label but knows they aren't straight.”

How moronic to point out she has a boyfriend and therefore question whether she is queer. Of course no gay man or gay woman has been in a relationship with a person of the other sex.

nauticant · 06/02/2020 08:47

Queer seems to mean "identifies as non-straight". Straight seems to mean "those boring people over there, not interesting like us".

Lordfrontpaw · 06/02/2020 08:45

I always thought that Q referred to males and not females. Well it was in my day when it was an insult.

I would have thought a dancer or choreographer should judge a dance show surely? Colour, sex and sexuality doesn’t really matter.

HandsOffMyLangCleg · 06/02/2020 08:45

Oh yes, Miley Cyrus came out as queer when she got married.
and she cut her hair short.

It is very en vogue.

Kit19 · 06/02/2020 08:43

oh i did laugh when i read this and thought it was a perfect example of a purity spiral in action

the frustrating this is I agree with a lot of what she says about body image and woman shaming and all that but then she also supports Danielle 'suck my dick' Muscato

I do not understand how she simultaneously both does and does not know what a woman is

ItsLateHumpty · 06/02/2020 08:42

It's a shame that she feels the need to adopt a label at all in order to justify being a judge on a voguing show.

Whatever your personal thoughts of her are, why is being a woman of colour not enough?

I don't know enough about the show - are all the contestants and judges etc always BAME / LGBTQI+?

NotTerfNorCis · 06/02/2020 08:31

'Queer' when used by women often means:

Attracted to women but doesn't like the word lesbian.

Or, heterosexual and in a relationship with a man who identifies as a woman.

Lordfrontpaw · 06/02/2020 08:30

I’ve only seen her being attacked in response to her school head girl lectures, gender nonsense and her throwing insults at other people. Not that I follow her (she just pops up now and again telling people what to do/think).

Cwenthryth · 06/02/2020 08:28

She is hideously attacked on twitter. If she is unpleasant to people it is in response to that.
Whatever happened to treat people how you’d like to be treated? Two wrongs don’t make a right?

I don’t follow her closely, but haven’t seen her be ‘hideously attacked’ (which is a fairly violent way to describe people writing words on a screen), I have seen many people disagree with her posts though. And some complete misunderstandings as well, which just made her opponents look daft.

boatyardblues · 06/02/2020 08:28

*objectively true is a bit hard to assess for the word queer as it seems to mean whatever you want it to mean.

Sadly you could say the same of ‘woman’ at the mo.

ItsLateHumpty · 06/02/2020 08:25

Opps I'm not sure who CharryLion is from my last comment. Autocucumber obvs likes to undermine me when I hit post.

She - well, she has been pretty vocal and unpleasant to people on social media. She didn’t come across as very nice.
