He’s on tour and I’ve just seen a Twitter post by someone saying he had a dig at Ricky Gervais’ Transphobia. That he hates Ricky Gervais is no surprise (I’m more of a Stewart Lee gal myself) but has anyone seen him live on this tour? I want to stick my fingers in my ears if he is because I bloody love his comedy.

I love Stewart Lee and anyone thinking he's smug is missing the point as it's part of his act. Because it is an act. Sounds like a lot of people on here hate him because they take him seriously. He's a comedian. You're not meant to take him seriously! If you do, then it's fair to say his style of comedy is not your cup of tea. Reviews for his current show are good and I'm looking forward to it.

popehilarious · 01/03/2020 18:06

If there's a boring, tedious bit in the act that's all part of it too Grin

I sometimes wonder if certain MN threads were started by Stewart Lee. Or Ted Chippington. "I was walking up the post office steps the other day, this chap came up to me, called Boswell..."

originalcobra · 01/03/2020 17:17

Mates have been, said it was brilliant, and funny. He was a right miserable b'tard on stage, all part of the act though, innit?

SerendipityJane · 01/03/2020 17:17

why are there 8 pages on this tosser?

I suspect there are some people commenting on this thread solely in the hope that SL will read their comments out next gig Grin

Who is this cunt ?

Thelnebriati · 01/03/2020 17:13

You are Richard Herring and I claim my £5 prize.

Chiochan · 01/03/2020 13:55

skorpion · 01/03/2020 13:35

HandsOff, apology accepted. I would never have a dig at anybody here, not brave enough Grin. And, also, why would I be arguing with people who believe and fight for my rights, among others'?

Thinking about these issues a bit more deeply is quite new to me and I don't think I can articulate my thoughts very well. I grew up in a culture where feminism was - and still is in many parts, I fear - a dirty word and sometimes I don't think I have the language skills.

Goddammit, when will I ever learn not to mention organs Grin

Barearseloverofthigh · 01/03/2020 11:28

Can we crowdfund for that Brass Eye special? I’d sell an organ to see what Chris Morris could do with identity politics in 2020

HandsOffMyRights · 01/03/2020 10:43

It was a cheap shot, sorry Skorpion.

I thought your listening to others may have been aimed at FWR, where there are many different women who share similar views on thorny issues like self ID. We face regular criticism for standing up for women's rights and are told to be kind and reeducate ourselves.

I found the SL audience was mainly woke blokes, so it would be refreshing if they could see the issues from our perspective, rather than chuckling at rape jokes (no matter how clever/ironic/ taking the piss out of others, they were meant to be).

skorpion · 01/03/2020 09:20

Oh, good one. A reaction to a post I make in 2020 is to trawl through posts that I may have made in 2009.

My point about SL show and it not opening up conversations was exactly that - a group of people listening to a bloke on stage and agreeing with him near on 100%. It just got me thinking about how much effort it may be to see and understand somebody else's point of view if all you are exposed to are people with the same views as you. It's a hot topic in the last few years, and I only said that the show got me thinking about this again. Surely, not a bad thing?

Thanks for the link, DuLANG, looks very interesting.

HandsOffMyrights · 01/03/2020 00:53

It's not given me any ideas as to how open conversations or include people who are different to me

Not sure what you mean by this?

Or by feminism (one of your previous posts jokes about your pregnancy and your DH joking about cows and being excited by boobies) Hmm.

definitelygc · 01/03/2020 00:21

Every time someone says "I'm a feminist BUT I just spent £55 on some face cream and I'm obsessed with it" a fairy dies. Wink

Binterested · 01/03/2020 00:04

God no. The Guilty Feminist is the Mother Superior of the handmaidens.

DuLANGMondeFOREVER · 29/02/2020 23:45

I’m hoping Andrew and Douglas can provide ways for people with different views to have open conversations, seeing as Doyle is on the left and Murray on the right:

www.entertainment-focus.com/theatre-section/theatre-news/resisting-wokeness-an-evening-with-douglas-murray-and-andrew-doyle-on-tour-spring-2020/

Because The Guilty Feminist certainly can’t.

nauticant · 29/02/2020 23:34

The Guilty Feminist provides ways for people with different views to have open conversations with each other? That's very different to my experience of it.

skorpion · 29/02/2020 08:58

We saw him on Thursday. We both love him and laughed a lot, as well a 'agree the fuck out of him'.

The reason I searched out this thread is that Mumsnet was mentioned. But only once - the early post about the Gervais 'saying the unsayable', nothing else. The Mumsnet comment was funny, too.

I agree, he's not for everybody. But if you know him already this show doesn't have any surprises.

What it provoked me to think about is bubbles - surrounding yourself (perhaps not intentionally) with people who think and feel like you. Everybody in the theatre laughed and clapped in exactly the right moments - the whole place was full to the brim of liberal snowflakes. Just like us. It's not given me any ideas as to how open conversations or include people who are different to me. I guess that's not was Stu is for, thank goodness we have The Guilty Feminist for that!

The ending song's last bit has become my new earworm.

clarabellabunting · 14/02/2020 15:38

I went to see Stewart Lee this week in Leicester, and his references to Mumsnet have dropped down to only once in the whole show - so perhaps he is still reading this thread, and maybe even listening.

His only mention of Mumnet was after the very long impression of Ricky Gervais attempting to say the unsayable (which actually gave me a stomach and face-ache from laughing), that "someone on Mumsnet says that bit goes on too long".

I would like to think that the one reference to the "Transgender community" earlier on in the show is more of a dig at Ricky Gervais than an actual statement of his position on gender.

I'm a massive fan, though, and have been disappointed with many of the people I love coming out on the wrong side of this issue before - so perhaps it is wishful thinking.

Stu - if you are reading this, please have a long think about the male fetishists who are hiding under the 'trans' umbrella and whether you would like to subject your daughter to sharing changing and toilet facilities with them. I'm as left wing as they come generally, and saw through it immediately. But I'm a woman, so I have a stake in this that you personally don't. Gender identity is no different than believing in souls so please take a sceptical, atheist approach to thinking about it.

FlamingoAndJohn · 08/02/2020 17:10

I don’t think it was that people were panicking unnecessarily but that people were panicking about the wrong thing.

popehilarious · 08/02/2020 11:22

We all remember the Brass Eye paedophile special, right? It was hilarious but the joke was that people were panicking about paedophiles unnecessarily. Not sure why proponents of child safeguarding would go to the writer of it for more satire?

MinecraftMother · 08/02/2020 00:10

Men do love to wax lyrical about other men's freedoms at the expense of women - until it affects them...

A la Dr Harrop...

HandsOffMyLangCleg · 07/02/2020 21:50

Oh really Arran? The mutual appreciation makes sense now. Both men using rape jokes in their routines.

ArranUpsideDown · 07/02/2020 21:45

Ince's view on gender ID been disappointing too?

Ince's views are disappointing in many ways.

I've never chosen to see him again after he (and every other male comedian) chose the sceptics' 9 Carols (or whatever it's called) to base a disproportionate amount of their routine around rape 'jokes.'
