It’s on my to read list

Mayomaynot · 22/01/2020 21:50

I got it for Christmas but haven't started reading it yet. Just started reading The Vagina Bible, by Jen Gunter. It's great so far.

Thesuzle · 22/01/2020 21:46

Blurting, Inferior ? By Perez as well ?

weebarra · 22/01/2020 21:37

I saw her at Edinburgh book festival last year - a very female dominated audience. She was great!

LangClegSupportersClub · 22/01/2020 21:34

Welshmamma great idea re taking a similar data focussed look at racism I hope she does that.

I've read the whole book, keep muttering ffs and reading bits out to the family. Bought it for two teenage female relatives for Christmas and I hope it makes them angry Grin

Fantastic book, will also look into the other recommendations on this thread as am enjoying feminist books at the moment.

I also just finished reading ‘give birth like a feminist’ by milli hill- I know the title may be a little off-putting but it was honestly a really eye-opening look at the history of patriarchy and misogyny in childbirth and how it still absolutely informs the way women are cared for and treated during pregnancy and childbirth.

BeyondReasonablyDoubtsLots · 22/01/2020 21:01

(i got it on eBay for about £6)

BeyondReasonablyDoubtsLots · 22/01/2020 21:00

I have it here, but haven't read it yet. It's first on my non-fiction reading list though

Socrates11 · 22/01/2020 20:07

It's now half price on Kindle so much more affordable than it was... But still not under a fiver which is my limit. It'll turn up in the charity shops eventually 😆

BlurtingOutTheInsideVoice · 22/01/2020 19:47

Great book, just finished it. I was either muttering 'oh for fucks sake' or reading it allow to anyone! Really recommend it and it a book you can leave and come back too. I also loved Inferior.

CraicMammy · 22/01/2020 19:40

I LOVE it, but have to pace myself as reading about the myriad indignities and barriers to full and fulfilling lives women are experiencing is not good for my blood pressure!

SwimmingCait · 22/01/2020 19:39

I read it. Its brilliant but rage inducing. I persuaded DS (15) to give it a go and DH is now reading it. Have promised DS £10 for every friend, male or female he can persuade to read it from cover to cover! Am hoping teenagers of both sexes can see the discrimination inherent in womens' lives.

WelshMammaofaSlovak · 22/01/2020 19:37

It's a fabulous, frustrating, infuriating read but it's given me great ammo for dealing with my 17 year old male students who think that the works is either absolutely equal or, worse, rolled in favour of women!!! I hope her next piece is related to racism - her research is awesome and I could also do with some help there sometimes. Teenagers are great but they are very black and white in how they see the world and can often have opinions that are to the right of Attila the Hun!!! Anything that makes them see the grey areas is helpful.

Divebar · 22/01/2020 19:32

Ohhhh there was no queue for it at my library but when I tried to reserve a copy of the Lady in Waiting book I was 70th in the queue! 70th!!!!

HadEnuff20 · 22/01/2020 19:25

My husband bought this for me for Christmas as I’d mentioned it a few times, am looking forward to reading it very soon. He and my teenage son have also said they would like to read it, so I hope they will.

AGnu · 22/01/2020 19:24

I've had it reserved at the library since October... Still waiting! There's 30 copies available in the area so someone must be reading it! I don't get on well with audio books & I'm trying to be eco-friendly/frugal & get books from the library instead of buying them but I'm getting really impatient! Must be my turn soon, right?!

Divebar · 22/01/2020 19:20

I’ve only just got it from the library so haven’t read much ( Sweden and snow ploughs really). Interestingly my DD7 has to write a diary from the viewpoint of a Viking or Anglo Saxon ( famous diarists they Viking’s Hmm ) and as soon as I read the fact about the female Viking warrior I was on the case... one female warrior Viking diary coming up!!

FleetsumNLangCleg · 22/01/2020 19:20

Read it, and gave it to a friend to read.

Lookingforpizza · 22/01/2020 19:18

I can't afford it atm but might buy it next month as I've been wanting to read it for ages. That, along with the other 11 books I've got piled up because I am a slow and unmotivated reader Grin

HelenaJustina · 22/01/2020 19:17

I read it in December. Made me militant and shouty in a similar way to ‘The Politics of Breastfeeding’ did. I get stopping and ranting at DH (an ardent feminist) every few paragraphs.

I’m pressing it on younger sisters and talking about it to lots of people. Had some great conversations sparked by it over the festive period! It is very well researched with lots of references, I’m now spotting my own examples frequently.

aliasundercover · 22/01/2020 19:15

It's a great book.

I'd also recommend giving it to men to read. Lots of feminist writing seems to get the back up of otherwise reasonable men, but not this as the arguments are so clearly, rationally and reasonably presented .

3timeslucky · 22/01/2020 19:13

I've just finished it. Like others I had to read it in chunks. It made me sad and angry. The section on medicine and healthcare frightened me.

It should be compulsory reading in every educational system.

Rumplestaleskin · 22/01/2020 18:48

I forgot I had downloaded this on Audible. I must start it when I’ve finished my current listen: ‘Somebody’s Mother, somebody’s daughter’.

TFSRM · 22/01/2020 18:44

I want to but I think it will make me really angry.

SpeedofaSloth · 22/01/2020 18:44

Yes - it makes me angry each time there's another moment of revelation and I have to put it down for a bit, so I am slow to read it though.
