sperm donations from dead men should be allowed

I can see where this will go.
And I'm thinking, hell no.

Also, isn't it funny how men, who can donate their sperm so easily without any fuss, bother, medical intervention or risk to their health...aren't doing it in sufficient numbers, yet women are risking their bodies and lives to be egg donors and surrogate mothers because we must be altruistic.

Tha forthcoming "opt-out", "presumed consent" organ donation system with "no plans at the current time" to harvest reproductive systems or gametes is starting to look very disturbing.

It's ethically wrong in my opinion and in the interests of the adults involved, not the child. How can we be sure a biological parent simply not existing at the time of your birth won't result in some really complex trauma later in life? It's difficult enough when adoptees can't find birth parents. At least they might have hope about finding them. It's so brutal that that link is considered to be absolutely irrelevant to the child. But the donor recipients are happy and the donors too dead to care and that's all that matters right?

Surely there are living fellas willing to donate sperm, with traceable genetic histories, who will provide marvellous genetic material with which to create yet another earth resource muncher who'll contribute to the demise of the planet?

No, the numbers have fallen now it is no longer anonymous, hence, the modern day Burkes and Hares see a corpse as fair game.

Gertrudesgarden · 21/01/2020 12:24

I predict we'll be back to body snatching within a couple of generations, tops. Burke and Hare, take 2

Gertrudesgarden · 21/01/2020 12:23

God this is grim. Surely there are living fellas willing to donate sperm, with traceable genetic histories, who will provide marvellous genetic material with which to create yet another earth resource muncher who'll contribute to the demise of the planet? Do we really need to violate the dead???

eminencegrise · 21/01/2020 12:20

People are nuts if they think presumed consent was going to be left just to organs. All the language surrounding it is far too vague and ambiguous to be trusted. No one is entitled to a child or someone else's genetic material.

Sorry - that second sentence makes no sense! Should read: And the children born from that donor sperm will be told that their dad was dead before they were even conceived?

Clymene · 21/01/2020 12:13

So men would give permission to have their sperm used after their death? And the parents of the children born from that donor sperm will be told that their dad was dead before they were even conceived?

That's all kind of weird and wrong and yuck

formerbabe · 21/01/2020 12:10

I find this idea repellent.

It's totally bizarre. There's too many people on the planet...7 billion and counting. Why on earth are we doing this?

LangCleg · 21/01/2020 12:04

Not one thought given to the best interests of the child. As per.

Kit19 · 21/01/2020 12:00

I believe the children of sperm donors have the right to know both who their sperm donor is and any other children who have been conceived using the same sperm

I can’t believe there arebt better ways of managing this issue than harvesting sperm from dead men fgs

SentimentalKiller · 21/01/2020 11:56

I found that case disturbing too. Wasn't she the one who had consent written on a scrap of paper🤔. An amazing coincidence that they agreed it just before he died. It's selfish imo and not putting the child first

Gingerkittykat · 21/01/2020 11:54

Horrific, although at least i is opt in so sperm won't be taken without consent.

I found the case of Diane Blood many years ago disturbing, and she had her husband's consent to harvest sperm and the children would know who their father was.

Like a PP said it would lead to creating grandchildren, siblings and nephews and nieces of living people. Would they or the child have a right to know each other?

littlbrowndog · 21/01/2020 11:47

Agree blooper. Why are they even thinking about this

So wrong

BlooperReel · 21/01/2020 11:33

This is all kinds of wrong. It will mean there will be families out there with relatives, a granchild, a niece/nephew, cousin etc who they do not know exist. It does not take inot account whether the dead man even wanted children. Heinous.

Endofthedays · 21/01/2020 10:24

‘"If it is morally acceptable that individuals can donate their tissues to relieve the suffering of others in 'life-enhancing transplants' for diseases, we see no reason this cannot be extended to other forms of suffering like infertility," they said.‘

This is such a dubious argument. If you donate an organ, it alleviates a medical condition. If you give gametes, you are not alleviating a medical condition. If you hand a man who is infertile your sperm, he is still infertile.

It’s a slide into resolving social issues, not medical ones, with worrying implications for women’s and children’s rights.

Kit19 · 21/01/2020 10:17

I’m not sure how this can be squared with the reason anonymity was lifted. as I understand this was because ppl felt it was detrimental To donor conceived children not to know who their bio father was. That being the case, how can it possibly be ok to say “your bio father was dead at the time”??
