Thanks.

I heard on the radio that young people actually aren’t having much sex these days. Maybe queer means “don’t know yet”; in that porn images of sex are very distant to reality and real life hasn’t happened for them yet?

ACatWhoBinds · 18/01/2020 22:53

Sorry @RuffleCrow, didn't mean to make a snap judgement on you, it just reminded me of a lot of dismissive comments I've heard. I think especially when people first start exploring their sexuality, queer can be a helpful label to them, it's not an exclusive term and they can grow and change within it. In the end I think it's someone's personal preference with what they feel fits them. Queer is a very broad label and I think that's helpful to some people

- There are a lot of people that have these lines of what you’re supposed to be as a queer person, which I always thought was crazy. That’s the point of queer — that it’s fluid and confusing and can be used as an identifier. So I was feeling not particularly queer enough, especially because I wasn’t out to my parents at that time. I’ve been in relationships with cis men, mostly, and I felt a little stigmatized — that I’m non-binary and pansexual, but I’m not a lesbian but I’m also not a girl. But I don’t feel like a bad queer anymore.

So glad.

RuffleCrow · 18/01/2020 22:21

Er, I'm bisexual, cat. That's why i tell people I'm bisexual. If i said i was Queer, people would suspect that meant straight with a daft haircut and an oscar in performative wokeness.

ACatWhoBinds · 18/01/2020 22:07

You see, this is the type of thing I'm talking about. Questioning whether people are 'gay enough'. You can be in a hetero passing relationship and bi, though people like to comment you've picked a side. I've only heard bicurious referring to someone wanting a gay experience like experimenting at uni, not someone's sexuality

RuffleCrow · 18/01/2020 21:56

Queer = straight with an asymmetric hair cut and a shitty dye job and a boyfriend you have to call Kylie.

TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain · 18/01/2020 21:52

Everyone I've met who describes themself as "queer" has been in a functionally hetero relationship, but deeply invested in the whole LGBTQ alphabet soup and desperate not to be seen as an onlooker.

One was a man dating a non-binary identifying woman and two are women married to men (no gender issues with either, both monogamous) who claim to be bisexual.

There used to be that term "bi-curious", didn't there? I think that describes the two women I'm talking about here. One of them I've known a long time and she's never been in a relationship with a woman, she's just theoretically open to the idea.

So it's about as useful as Stonewall's definition of trans. It could be applied to practically anyone.

ACatWhoBinds · 18/01/2020 20:35

I didn't mean to do the cross through on that post! Can't get the hang of formatting 😂

ACatWhoBinds · 18/01/2020 20:34

@OneEpisode it can refer to sexuality or gender identity - sexuality being anything that isn't hetero and genderqueer being anything that isn't identifying as how you were identified at birth
I saw Steph Knipe from Adult Mom describe it well - There are a lot of people that have these lines of what you’re supposed to be as a queer person, which I always thought was crazy.

My first formula was wrong. On rereading it’s q=(b or g or nb) + p where p is definitely pan, not the other thing that starts with p.

OneEpisode · 18/01/2020 20:18

So q =(b or q or nb) where nb is part of t.
But also “there's a lot of gatekeeping in the community, people saying you can't be gay unless you've done a certain thing” so q < lgbt?
I’m not sure I’ve got it.

HorseWithNoTimeForThis · 18/01/2020 20:10

It isn't a better word.

ACatWhoBinds · 18/01/2020 20:02

@OneEpisode I define queer as someone who isn't 100% straight - they might be bi/gay/pan - and feel that better defines them than specific labels or someone who's enby/doesn't identify with their gender. I think it's a label for people who don't feel 100% hetero or c*s (for want of a better word)
Hope this helps 🧡

WelshMoth · 18/01/2020 19:55

Thanks to everyone who has posted and this isn't a reflection on your powers of explanation, but am still none the wiser.

Queer is for gender non conforming people, whatever their sexual orientation.

Ah! Right.

But could you say what a gender non conforming person is? (I think I might be one.)

Thanking you in advance, fiestar.

OneEpisode · 18/01/2020 17:53

Great, ACat what does “queer” mean now?

ACatWhoBinds · 18/01/2020 17:42

I disagree with the people saying 'queer' is a trendy label. It can be helpful to some people - there's a lot of gatekeeping in the community, people saying you can't be gay unless you've done a certain thing, bi people settle and it's 'choosing a side' etc. and I think having a label like queer can help with that. It's not a definitive label. Though I do understand that it obviously was used as a pejorative in the past and that not all LGBTQ+ people are like that, it's just something I've experienced and I know other people have too

theyrazedparadise · 18/01/2020 11:56

Procreation is racist now ?

Lordy these people are insane.

BovaryX · 18/01/2020 11:56

for clarity, The Marxist Foundations is a chapter in The Madness of Crowds*....

BovaryX · 18/01/2020 11:31

Douglas Murray has an interesting chapter in his book called 'The Marxist Foundations' which is scathing about the roots of the incoherent post modernist claptrap which has evolved after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Anybody hoping that intersectionality would dissolve amid its own inherent contradictions cannot have seen the myriad of contradictions a Marxist can hold in their head at any one time

He is also scathing about the ludicrously 'obstructive' style of the writing by Judith Butler et al and concludes

Prose this bad can only occur when the author is trying to hide something

in its inability to pass a Popperite Falsifiability Test

And if it can't pass the esteemed Professor's test, it's BS. It strikes me that many of the 'academics' peddling this have never read Popper. Nor Hayek.

aliasundercover · 18/01/2020 10:59

Procreation is racist?

That's the best yet.

Mockers2020Vision · 18/01/2020 10:55

I have a degree in Politics and International Relations and I'm blowed if I know what any of that means. The only connection is that so much of this Queer Theory stuff is reminiscent of old school Marxism in its inability to pass a Popperite Falsifiability Test.

OneEpisode · 18/01/2020 10:42

I don’t think everyone who says they are queer has read queer theory. Because queer is another one of those “umbrella terms” which means it can mean anything someone wants it it mean. So can be used to get a lesbian to have sex with a penis-haver who reads poems for instance.
I have been over on Wikipedia and apparently there is something called homonormativity in queer theory, and it’s a bad thing.
“According to Penny Griffin, Politics and International Relations lecturer at the University of New South Wales, homonormativity upholds neoliberalism rather than critiquing monogamy, procreation, and binary gender roles as inherently heterosexist and racist.”
I can almost understand some of that but some of it is Shock
