FFS! Why did a she have to do this? It’s so divisive and gratuitously mean!

p.s. Hi Zebra! :-]

DrLouiseJMoody · 17/01/2020 18:05

Hi Bovary,

I completely take your point, and agree, that academics are on the frontline. My point is a simple one: any women who speaks out in the current climate is on the front line (e.g. NHS workers, civil servants, retail workers - anyone given the totalitarian creep of gender 'inclusive' policies). In academia, I am particularly concerned with early career researchers who speak out given how scarce jobs are (it's easy for departments to appoint a qualified candidate with less 'problematic' views) and those on precarious contracts (although this has always been a worrisome issue).

For me, there's no clash, just different personalities doing different things all with a common goal in mind. That seems a good thing :-]

BovaryX · 17/01/2020 18:03

Sapphos
You have embraced both the guilt by association fallacy and now you are doubling down with the appeal to authority fallacy. You said that PP is doing real damage to women yet you have failed to produce any substantiation for this laughable accusation. Most people are able to understand that there is diversity of opinion and style in any movement. Those who can't and insist upon rigid authoritarian orthodoxy are usually zealots.

Doobigetta · 17/01/2020 18:01

I seem to remember it wasn’t me who bought the second bottle, DuMondeB. See you there? Grin

BovaryX · 17/01/2020 17:54

I thought this thread was about the continuing clash between academic feminists and Posie Parker

Then you haven't been reading it properly

Well said floisme Also, as one academic feminist has elegantly argued on this very thread, there is not one unanimous, definitive view on this....

theflushedzebra · 17/01/2020 17:51

Sapphos, do you have to repeat the same old crap on every thread about posie?
I can link to the last thread about posie, and probably the one before that, where the same tired old arguments about what posie did a year ago, or said 3 years ago on twitter, were all thrashed out.
You don't like her, we get it.

Qcng · 17/01/2020 17:49

Sapphos
"A liability"
To what?

She doesn't subscribe to some sort of puritan feminism, a mythical pure left, anything like that, and has frequently said so.
So who is PP exactly putting at a disadvantage for basically speaking?

Left wing women are increasingly frustrated that there are so many taboo subjects, like FGM, Transing children, grooming gangs, etc within the left, and when you speak about these things in plain language you get ostracized.

PP deserves some sort of bravery medal imo.

Julie Bindel is equally brilliant, she has had lots of abuse for speaking.
WRT the Mona thing, Mona has behaved terribly over the past few days, Julie behaved badly too.
PP has defended herself.

SapphosRock · 17/01/2020 17:45

Gawd Horse where to start. How about that trip to Washington? I like Kathleen Stock's response.

It's just embarrassing (and unlikely) that anyone would 'fangirl' her for those shenanigans,

Julie Bindel bullying Posie
Floisme · 17/01/2020 17:43

I thought this thread was about the continuing clash between academic feminists and Posie Parker.
Then you haven't been reading properly. It concerned a specific tweet about Posie Parker by Julie Bindel (not an academic as far as I'm aware) which Julie has deleted and admitted was wrong.

theflushedzebra · 17/01/2020 17:42

I know, Scapeflo, I just came on here to fangirl Grin

ScapaFlo · 17/01/2020 17:39

I know, theflushedzebra I want to post just so I can be a part of it but I can't think of anything to say Grin

theflushedzebra · 17/01/2020 17:35

The last Posie thread ran to 1000 posts Wink

I'm star-stuck at a thread with both Dr Louise Moody and Julie Bindel on Grin I think you're both amazing women. I love Posie too Star Star Star

#TeamWomen here. Wine

HorseWithNoTimeForThis · 17/01/2020 17:33

I imagine academic feminists are frustrated that Posie Parker is doing real harm to women..

It's great that you can imagine stuff, but do you have anything a little more concrete?

SapphosRock · 17/01/2020 17:28

I thought this thread was about the continuing clash between academic feminists and Posie Parker.

High profile feminists such as Julie Bindel, Kathleen Stock and Jean Hatchett have all publicly denounced her actions and called her a liability. And I agree with them.

AnyFucker · 17/01/2020 17:25

I haven't "sung anyone's praises"

I have my own opinions. I can support and admire people for their individual actions whilst not engaging with stuff I don't agree with.

LangCleg · 17/01/2020 16:57

I imagine academic feminists are frustrated that Posie Parker is doing real harm to women

LOL. I thought appeals to privilege were bad. Make your mind up, dear.

BovaryX · 17/01/2020 16:51

The Academy has been at the vanguard of the war on free speech. Very few academics are brave enough to speak out against the chilling environment which pervades universities on both sides of the Atlantic. The Liberal establishment has a vice like grip on education to the detriment of critical thinking and free speech

DrLouiseJMoody · 17/01/2020 16:50

Academic feminists are not the only voice, but one voice in a large movement. They hold no particular power or have any special influence, at least, no more so than the rest of us; but obviously, as a collective, we are indeed powerful and can begin to effect real change. I'm not sure why academic views should be given priority over anyone else's, but perhaps I've missed the point. Perhaps Sappho just meant to explain the perspective of some (and again, feminist academics are a large group so I wouldn't assume that the views of a few are representative of the whole).

Floisme · 17/01/2020 16:47

I wasn't aware Julie Bindel was an academic in addition to her many other talents? In any case, academic feminists are perfectly entitled to their opinions on Posie but they're not in charge of feminism.

BovaryX · 17/01/2020 16:44

Sapphos

Back up your unsubstantiated accusation that PP is doing real harm to women. Substantiate that accusation.

slipperywhensparticus · 17/01/2020 16:40

What harm is she doing to muslim women? Is this because standing for women said there is a real need to discuss Pakistani rape gangs? The ones that weren't investigated for years because it was racist to suggest it was happening? and it was only happening to white trash girls anyway? Ohh and a couple killed themselves...

Coyoacan · 17/01/2020 16:37

Posie Parker is doing real harm to women (Muslim women in particular)

Au contraire.

Muslim women need single sex spaces to go out and about and Posie is contributing majorly to that cause. She doesn't like Islam and is not a fan of Muslims, but that does not equate to the very real harm being done to them by the removal of single-sex spaces.

LangCleg · 17/01/2020 16:34

Hello Julie! Ha. Like the rest of us, I expect it's not the first time you've made a tit of yourself, nor will it be the last. I manage it at least once a week.

SapphosRock · 17/01/2020 16:31

She doesn't even call herself a feminist so I don't understand this constant need to comment.

I imagine academic feminists are frustrated that Posie Parker is doing real harm to women (Muslim women in particular) and yet here we are on a feminism forum with the majority of posters singing her praises.

DuMondeB · 17/01/2020 16:20

Looking forward to hearing you in Manchester next month, and I hope you’ll come out for a drink with us afterwards

Make sure you have taxi fare, Doobie is a dirty stop out, you won’t get in til 2! Wink
