New ‘this girl can’ ad praised for showing tampon string

On the one hand - great for showing that being on your period doesn’t stop you from taking part in sport. But having been educated about some of the horrific fetishisation of tampons and visible strings that goes on among certain networks am I wrong to feel uncomfortable about it? I don’t bleed any more but when I did I don’t think I ever left a string hanging out of my knickers either.

Eh? Tampon strings are not meant to be on show, surely if anything it might put people off sport thinking they are going to be underdressed.

Anyway, I have never got past the fact that the phrase "this girl can" is used to encourage women to do sport. It is a perfectly good phrase for children.

PlanDeRaccordement · 16/01/2020 17:51

I just watched the ad. The tampon string didn’t bother me. That’s a plus for encouraging.

What bothered me was part of the ad showing the woman in bed on her period with a hot water bottle while the music was saying “I know I got bad habits”.

That’s just shaming women who’s periods are actually too painful for them to do sport.

Melroses · 16/01/2020 17:47

I hope they do one with a women over 40-odd in it next

And over 50, 60 etc without them looking like clean shiny active grey Grannies out of an incontinence advert.

Goosefoot · 16/01/2020 17:47

It doesn't normalise girls doing sports during menstruation any more than showing her with a tampon in a package would. And like someone else said, who ever has seen this in life - I don't think I've ever noticed a tampon string. Not that it never happens but its certainly not a usual thing.

And TBH I don't really think lack of normalisation is why some girls avoid sports when menstruating. If anything the opposite, the fact that here is little accommodation in many more serious sports for girls who struggle with tampons or their period leads them to quit. The expectation s they se a tampon and that is easy and will work for everyone - even quite young girls. Tampons and moon cups don't work for you, well you'd better forget about the swim team because as soon as you miss a meet you are off the team.

Hadn't seen this one, either, it's great. I think it's about the tune they pick as well as the images. This year's isn't quite as catchy, but I still like it.

Fetishists gonna fetishise, what can you do?

YorkshirePud1 · 16/01/2020 17:46

I've just watched it and think it's a great advert. The tampon string is just a one second part of a full one min advert.

CountFosco · 16/01/2020 17:44

I think the point could be made better.

It's a decent ad. I hope they do one with a women over 40-odd in it next.

The 2017 phenomenal woman one had older women in it.

Melroses · 16/01/2020 17:43

Agreed, box in the shot, with lots of smiling faces and happy laughter, or a tampon in a hand rushing to push on the toilet door.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 16/01/2020 17:43

Bloody loved this one:

The horrific transwoman yaniv constantly, constantly asked young girls about their tampon strings etc.vile.

IntermittentParps · 16/01/2020 17:41

I don't have any strong feelings about fetishists (there are fetishists about EVERYTHING, I assume), but I agree they are trying too hard and a box of tampons in a changing room would have been better.

Melroses · 16/01/2020 17:41

Apart from the perves (I agree it is up their street), I think most of the girls who could will be thinking "HTF is she going to get on, running around with a tampon string caught in her knicker elastic Confused "

Sirstheword · 16/01/2020 17:39

Anything can and is a fetish for someone, somewhere. It’s a nice ad, you’re being precious

marvellousnightforamooncup · 16/01/2020 17:37

In all my 45 + years, I've yet to leave a string visible myself and I've never seen one visible on someone else. Doesn't happen. Mind you, I don't actively look for them.

This ad is a bit try hard. I get what they're trying to do but still. Great for the pervs though!

Whatnowagnes · 16/01/2020 17:36

It's an awesome advert and normalises sport for women, in particular menstruating women.

Great inclusive campaign to bring about much needed change to keep women playing sport.

Well done #thisgirlcan

Thethiniceofanewday · 16/01/2020 17:34

There’s a screenshot of a conversation where yaniv is asking if you see strings hanging down in female changing rooms, isn’t there Envy (not envy). Now they’ve got their wish.

I loved it! Still remember the first this girl can with missy Elliott. I know you'll get creeps but I think breaking down barriers is more important

marvellousnightforamooncup · 16/01/2020 17:33

Mooncups are better.

Thethiniceofanewday · 16/01/2020 17:32

Yes melroses that would have been much better!

OP posts:
tobee · 16/01/2020 17:29

Jeez how long are the strings!

NomDeQwerty · 16/01/2020 17:22

It's a decent ad. I hope they do one with a women over 40-odd in it next.

littlecabbage · 16/01/2020 17:22

I see what they are trying to do but agree that it is uncomfortable viewing due to fetishists. Yes Melroses, there are probably better ways of saying "you can exercise during your period".

TheSandman · 16/01/2020 17:22

Hefzi, there are people out there with active fetishes about EVERYTHING!

Melroses · 16/01/2020 17:19

It is a shame as it could be a good ad.

Hefzi · 16/01/2020 17:19

I saw the ad earlier - it doesn't sit right with me not just because it's asking to have it pulled out when you catch it wrong (it is) but mainly because, thanks to the ghastly Yaniv, I now know there are creeps out there with active tampon fetishes Angry
