Parents rejecting gender neutral (unisex) toilets

Here's a ray of light. This is what most people really think.

Hundreds of people have signed a petition against gender-neutral toilets at a school in Leicester.

The toilets were introduced at New College in New Parks, Leicester after the school's Christmas holidays.

Around 500 people have signed the petition, which is against the introduction of the toilets.

Apologies for the Sun link.

I had a doll with a penis. I was given it as a gift from a relative, I think it was bought in Spain. Came wearing a dress. Had a small willy. Caused much mirth. I think it may have been discretely removed from my toys!

Luckystar777 · 18/01/2020 02:27

It was a baby doll, a boy and girl. it was i suppose intended for girls to feel like they had a ''real'' baby boy or girl in their buggy? :(

Luckystar777 · 18/01/2020 02:25

As for dolls with genitals, I remember ones in the argos catalogue about 25 years ago, they were ''anatomically correct''. I don't remember the brand name.

Luckystar777 · 18/01/2020 02:23

It looks like they're making unisex loos so that they can eventually put cctv in them.. it seems it's being done on purpose. ''problem'' - reaction - ''solution''.. just another step closer to an orwellian world :(

I just wanted to say how shocked I was reading about Troels’ daughter’s experiences. I really feel for her and her friends and can completely relate to rabbitwoman’s account of the misery of early puberty (albeit without her experience of such an unsympathetic reaction from teachers).

It is actually not good to discourage anyone from using the loo when they need to (retention of urine, constipation etc) so schools need to think more about the health risks (as well as the safeguarding ones) of making all loos gender neutral. As for CCTV, why are we supposed to think this is a solution?

For the sake of argument, if we assume the reports about the Leicester school are accurate, then schools are being inconsistent in their provision of gender specific and neutral loos. This is really unfair.

I don’t personally mind well designed rows of gender neutral cubicles but I recognise other women do. As adult women, we can choose to avoid shops, restaurants, theatres, pubs etc that don’t have the facilities we want. However, I really feel for girls at school who don’t have this choice.

Creepster · 17/01/2020 04:17

Anatomically correct dolls used to be specially made for children's testimony. Perhaps they still are.

Datun · 17/01/2020 03:28

Gosh, I never saw genitals on dolls. I'm curious now. But not googling it...

rabbitwoman · 16/01/2020 21:34

Ya, I definitely have a memory of dolls with little willies, but not very detailed, more the suggestion of one? Not vaginas, though....

Lordfrontpaw · 16/01/2020 20:58

I seem to remember baby boy dolls when I was little and I think they had a weeny penis. Action Man definitely didn’t.

ScapaFlo · 16/01/2020 20:57

When did dolls ever have genitals? That's just yuk and completely unnecessary.

QuantumEntanglement · 16/01/2020 20:53

Omigod that doll! Who is buying that for their children?

Stick a fork in me, I’m done.

Maria Miller on this evening'sChannel 4 news........on the subject of the increase in cases of sexual assaults within schools - and what she felt needed to be done to counter-act this.....at no point was the topic of mixed sex toilets brought up........

ThinEndoftheWedge · 16/01/2020 20:04

Channel 4 News 7pm this eve did a 1 /2 report on increased sexual violence in schools and interviewed Maria Miller - Equalities portfolio.

Part 2 / 2 tomorrow.

rabbitwoman

Yes, it's awful. And, of course, your story is far from unique. Almost every girl who starts to develop feels self-conscious. It's normal, natural. But we don't need to encourage boys to take the piss.

rabbitwoman · 16/01/2020 17:51

I was a very early developer. Periods and a c cup at nine years old - I am only five foot tall now, so at this time I was much shorter than all of my classmates. With bigger boobs than some of the teachers. And periods.

Everyone - girls and boys - was both bigger than me and fascinated by my tiny woman-child body. They gave me a nickname, 'rabbitwoman' and the mountains (my actual name begins with an M so it sounded better than that!)

An early memory I have is when we were doing the school play. The teachers had us all changing in the classroom together. I was so embarassed; trying to hide my 'mountains' taking my shirt off, held it in front of me. A load of boys were throwing things at me to trick me into catching them, thus dropping my shirt. So, I took myself off to the empty changing rooms for some privacy.

A teacher came and shouted at me to get back into the classroom. I tried to explain - but of course, to them I was a 9 year old child, they did not see me as a woman-child in need of privacy, dignity or protection from leering boys. Those boys themselves were only 9. So in the eyes of the teacher, not predators, not dangerous, only playing, only being silly.

And now, when we are being given training on the dangers of child on child sexual abuse, we are abandoning little, scared, embarrassed girls like I was to attack and abuse.

Just heart breaking.

🙈🙈🙈

Lordfrontpaw · 16/01/2020 17:48

That doll is the face of an old man. That would have scared me to death as a child (it’s not doing much for me right now actually).

Tubbytwo · 16/01/2020 17:45

You really couldn’t make this stuff up! I’m hoping that it will eventually implode and good sense will prevail. How many children of both sexes and women will have to be harmed first though? 😟

Datun · 16/01/2020 17:42

And The Sun are reporting on a doll for children, where when you lift its dress, it has a penis. A transgender doll.

At what point did anyone believe that children's toys should constitute lifting dresses and finding penises?

Why is this being normalised? Why are our daughters' boundaries being erased.

Did the school do an equality impact assessment? Which I believe is recommended under the equality act.

Troels · 16/01/2020 17:08

@SarahTancredi I agree, they knew.
I was discussing it with Dh in the car this afternoon. He's quite horrified they had locked them too. Even he gets that girls (and boys) need a safe single sex area.

Tubbytwo · 16/01/2020 16:56

That’s what’s puzzling me too Datun. We’ve heard so many first person accounts of abuse, including rape and child sex abuse and we (as a society) react with horror and sympathise with the victims. But what happens then? Not only do we do feck all to prevent it happening again, we actually facilitate it.

When will the majority of people realise what sort of future they are sleepwalking towards? What legacy will we leave our children?

SarahTancredi · 16/01/2020 16:54

Well if they opened then they knew they were behaving in an inappropriate manner.

Or theyd have replied politely telling you how wrong you were and left them.locked.

They know. Which makes.it worse.

Troels · 16/01/2020 16:50

I've an update on Dd's school.
They saw my very polite message before school started today, and she checked the girl toilets in the blocks she used today. They were open! So now she is going to ask her girlfriends to keep checking they are open as they go through the day, wander in, wash hands and check their hair/makeup just so they are being used even if they don't need a wee.
If I get a report of them re locking then I'll be on it again.
I don't think they wanted to start an argument with load of angsty teen girls and their mothers.
I hope the school in the OP starts to see sense. Dd and I had a talk about how women could go out far from home or family or friends home due to public toilet being men only back in the late 1800's and how they protested to get these safe spaces for women. And about the 1992 health and safety act (I think that was it) about toilets.
So thank you for the links ladies, all very helpful.

Datun · 16/01/2020 16:42

What I cannot understand now is how that could be noted, understood and accepted as a barrier to inequality that must be overcome in developing parts of the world, and then just a few years later we are now saying that mixed sex toilets are what is needed in the UK?

In the teeth of rising levels of sexual harassment and assault, and in the climate of #metoo.
