Langcleg “Treating a young person with anxiety and issues relating to body image and identity integrity with a medication known to often cause acute acne? This enrages me so much I can barely type.“

Let alone the other drugs and surgery - beyond irresponsible, this whole new trans policy towards children‘s healthcare. When did sanity go out of the window?

JolyonsChickensAreBigots · 10/01/2020 16:30

Terribly sad, I worry that medical professionals are failing some of these young people.

We need to be able to have a more open discussion about cause nad effect with proper accurate statistics to be able to determine what treatment is effective for these young people but that seems impossible at the moment without some being called transphobes and their careers threatened

PermanentTemporary · 10/01/2020 16:12

I agree that saying any suicide is for one specific reason is against reporting restrictions on suicide. I dont want to thread police, but could you consider getting mnhq to revise the thread title?

There is an idea among some professionals that it's inappropriate to question the why behind dysphoria.

In the UK they've all had to sign up to this 'Memorandum of Understanding' on conversion therapy..

www.psychotherapy.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/UKCP-Memorandum-of-Understanding-on-Conversion-Therapy-in-the-UK.pdf

For the purposes of this document ’conversion therapy’ is an umbrella term for a therapeutic approach, or any model or individual viewpoint that demonstrates an assumption that any sexual orientation or gender identity is inherently preferable to any other, and which attempts to bring about a change of sexual orientation or gender identity, or seeks to supress an individual’s expression of sexual orientation or gender identity on that basis.

There is an idea among some professionals that it's inappropriate to question the why behind dysphoria. The report that closed the Toronto gender clinic, written by a couple of child psychologists, stated this explicitly, that it was for psychiatrists to accept, not question, the gender identity, and this was one of the reasons they said the practice there was inappropriate.

We are repeatedly being told by the trans lobby that transgender people become suicidal due to a lack of medical treatment, yet there is increasing evidence that the treatment doesn't help.

This was posted on the Robert Winston thread about things he was saying over 2 years ago.

twitter.com/bayswatersg/status/1215326127457173505?s=21

Lord Winston expressed concern about medically transitioning young people without having "really defined what is really wrong: what is the cause for people seeking gender reassignment? Until we define the problem, I think we're going to have a very blunderbus problem.”

Lord Winston continued: "when you start taking off breasts, a large number - probably 23% according to a very recent paper - feel uncomfortable about what they've done, and I think those sorts of issues are important.”

"Then of course, what I've been seeing in a fertility clinic are of course the long-term results of often very unhappy people who now feel quite badly damaged.”

An entire generation of troubled young people is being betrayed by the very professionals who should be helping them. This is our century's lobotomy scandal.

jadefinch · 10/01/2020 12:00

This is not the first case like this in the last year or so.

Jayden Lowe committed suicide after illegal treatment from Helen Webberley - the doctor Mermaids had as a recommended clinician until she fled to Spain to set up an online pharmacy that posts hormones to patients

I wonder if this person was given Roaccutane for the acne. It's a known cause of ideation, I believe.

Point taken about not attributing causes to suicides, CallofDoodee - I imagine that’s why my post was removed though I can’t recall exactly what I’d said.

Any young suicide is such a tragedy whatever the cause, poor kid.

Whilst this is really awful, I'm a bit uncomfortable talking about this persons suicide. As I understand it, the media are not really supposed to report on the reasons behind someone's suicide, and it's something that comes up a lot on here when transactivists claim that xyz caused someone to kill themselves. And I think that works both ways to be honest.

popehilarious · 09/01/2020 23:08

This is so bloody sad. 25 is no age.

Ginandsonic · 09/01/2020 22:59

I suspect that depression etc is being taken as a symptom of gender dysphoria rather than the other way around. So the notes will show a diagnosis of dysphoria based on the symptoms of psychological distress, when for a lot of these young people, the dysphoria is them trying to manage the distress in a dysfunctional way.

It's an absolute scandal.

LangCleg · 09/01/2020 22:55

Treating a young person with anxiety and issues relating to body image and identity integrity with a medication known to often cause acute acne?

This enrages me so much I can barely type.

EmpressLesbianInChair · 09/01/2020 22:48

Don't they run the risk of being accused of 'conversion attempts' if they question in any way a patient's trans identity?

Yes. That Memorandum of Understanding they had to sign up to.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 09/01/2020 22:41

why are gender clinics not looking at the whole person?

Don't they run the risk of being accused of 'conversion attempts' if they question in any way a patient's trans identity?

Boomboomboomboom · 09/01/2020 22:15

I fear this highly likely to be repeated. There appears to be a presumption of capacity and an unwillingness to explore co-morbidity by the treating clinics and it's not just private ones.
How anyone treating what is a psychological condition can presume it is not a symptom of a psychiatric condition is beyond me. Why are the treating physicians not looking at full patient notes before diagnosis and treatment?
I KNOW they are not- if they had here they would have noted depression and anxiety but in an affirmation based service it appears there is no willingness or scientific intelligence to explore that further. I fear many others will be harmed with irreversible surgery and treatment which doesn't fix the actual underlying conditions.

That is not to say that co-morbidity and full capacity cannot coexist. There will be those who are fully capable of choosing treatment options. But if the clinics are not exploring these issues how can they be sure the treatment is correct? A vascular surgeon wouldn't ignore a patient's hemophilia when considering treatment options so why are gender clinics not looking at the whole person?

Tragic.

YourOpinionIsNoted · 09/01/2020 21:47

Yes, sorry must, I didn't mean everyone in the medical profession, just those who are pushing this narrative. It must be heartbreaking and enraging to see it up close.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 09/01/2020 21:46

I know, Must, sorry, I wasn't implying all medics don't care! There are some not taking responsibility for their actions, and some out to make a fast buck no matter the consequences.

The lack of proper support for mental health in this country is pretty sickening. The case you're talking about sounds like CAMHS just trying to pass the buck, to be honest. Poor kid. I hope she finds peace, and I hope you are able to maintain your own mental health in what must be a difficult job.

JanesKettle · 09/01/2020 21:43

Private gender clinics are unethical.

I hope one day the professionals who collude in this unethical behaviour towards suffering women for motivations of profit are held to account.

Muststopfaffing · 09/01/2020 21:35

Some of us in the medical profession care and rail against this as much as you do. I am currently trying to engage with a teenage girl who I referred to CAMHS with crippling anxiety and who magically now thinks she might be a boy. I’m watching as the letters come from CAMHS advising her to look at Mermaids and consider referral to GIDS. And no one is questioning why this girl, who’s never expressed any signs of gender dysphoria before has suddenly found the answer to all her problems. And all I can do is keep inviting her in to appointments to chat how she is that she declines to attend. It’s heartbreaking.
