Layla Moran: Potential Lib Dem leadership candidate becomes first MP to come out as pansexual

Quote: Ms Moran, 37, told PinkNews that she had not previously had same-sex relationships and was “surprised” to find herself attracted to a woman, but added: “Sometimes, when you meet the right person, it just kind of happens.”

She said she was more comfortable with the label “pansexual” than “bisexual” or “gay” because it referred to the idea of love for an individual person for who they are and not their gender or sexual identity.

I think in Layla's case most people aren't that bothered that she is in a relationship with a woman. Who the woman is is far more significant.

And I do still have big issues over her admitted DV, just as I would if it was a man. DV is DV. Fraud is fraud.

boatyardblues · 03/01/2020 13:20

My apologies ThatDamnedWoman if I offended you. In my situation the person dropped it into a conversation completely out of the blue, not to correct an assumption. They literally plopped it in the middle of a conversation about something else. I tend not to assume people’s orientation and take them as I find them. DH and I would welcome them & their partner into our home, irrespective of whether they were same sex or a straight couple. I just don’t see why it’s important to announce it unless it is relevant to context - in the same way people who hold strong religious belief that is intrinsic to their sense of identity tend to raise it as & when necessary. I think the information about the imminent tabloid story came after I posted, which then provides the relevant context for Moran’s public statement.

Midgebabe, Layla Moran was outing herself – putting herself on the line as other, different, in a minority, and therefore making herself vulnerable. Coming out puts you in a position where you can be rejected or insulted or even physically attacked. It's not a trivial thing.

Boatyardblues said:
I’m still puzzling over why this person needed to tell us boring old married farts. It’s not like we are in their potential dating pool, so no ‘need to know’, and we’re not bothered who they want to love, date or have sex with.

Let's leave aside the fact that the Daily Mail was about to 'expose' her for having a relationship with a woman and so she was compelled to come out. Let's look at Boatyardblues's words.

'Us' = normal straight married people. 'They' = people not like us. The assumption being that everyone here is the default. It others me and Layla Moran.

And then, paraphrasing, it goes on that Boatyardblues and the rest of 'us' (straight married people) don't need to know about Layla Moran, they're not interested. Which reads to me like shut up and go away, we're not in your dating pool I don't want to know that you are different to me.

Possibly you need to have braced yourself to come out to someone who has assumed you are just like them (straight) and been told they don't care, they just wish you gays wouldn't keep going on about it to understand.

If you don't get it, you don't get it – but I will draw my own conclusions from the fact you don't get it.

Sexequality · 03/01/2020 12:40

Unwilling though I am to stick up for Layla Moran, she made her statement because she was going to be outed by a tabloid and she wanted to get in first to change the focus away from the fake emails.

MIdgebabe · 03/01/2020 12:33

Sorry damnwoman but could you explain why the statement is homophobic

I read it as anyone straight or otherwise can be married, and married people do not generally consider themselves to be part of a dating pool

Just trying to see through your eyes

Melroses · 03/01/2020 12:03

Thank you OhHolyJesus I didn't realise the implications of the end of that video when I watched it before (but then we did not know Rosie Cobb was in a relationship with Layla Moran Hmm )

Worth the re-watch.

LangCleg · 03/01/2020 12:00

It's an amusing irony when MNHQ deleting feminist posts that get a bit too close to the truth-telling bone with regard to gender theory, means that the posts remaining are much more concentrated on what a particular gender-believer would rather feminists aren't mentioning.

Ha!

Responding to Boatyardblues' comment on page 1:

I’m still puzzling over why this person needed to tell us boring old married farts. It’s not like we are in their potential dating pool, so no ‘need to know’, and we’re not bothered who they want to love, date or have sex with.

I'm surprised to see such a homophobic statement go unchallenged for four pages.

When it's assumed I'm straight (which sometimes happens on a daily basis) I'm sometimes required to out myself. Sometimes it's necessary for factual clarity and sometimes it's because I don't want to perpetuate a false assumption which might end up with embarrassment down the line.

It's not unusual, once I've said that my partner is a woman/ I'm a lesbian, to get the defensive 'I don't care if you're gay or straight or whatever, I just wish your lot would stop going on about it all the time' speech you just delivered, Boatyardblues.

Unwilling though I am to stick up for Layla Moran, she made her statement because she was going to be outed by a tabloid and she wanted to get in first. It wasn't because she fancies you. The fact that she has chosen not to identify as lesbian makes her homophobic in my book and tells you just how desperately anti-lesbian and anti-feminist the woke element of the left are. Lesbian feminists are now the enemy of the far left and the woke. They are terrified of women-focussed women.

I've seen threads here asking what straight people can do to support lesbians and the very first thing you can do is recognise homophobia, whether it's your own or others', and challenge it.

TimeAfterTimeAfter · 03/01/2020 11:56

Daily mail have done quite a good job reporting on this story. The text of the article was all about Moran's statement and then it had a panel setting out Cobb's activities, minus the silencing around Challenor, unfortunately but you can't have everything.

Binterested · 03/01/2020 11:53

I didn’t know about the surgery. That is interesting and actually makes me much more sympathetic to her. There’s a lot to be said for bariatric surgery - it can really work. My dear Aunt has her life revolutionised by it at 60 after a lifetime of struggle.

I wouldn’t want it to get categorised at the Mermaids/chop off the bits that make you unhappy end of the spectrum of interventions.

OhHolyJesus · 03/01/2020 11:44

Layla has spoken about being overweight and she had her stomach stapled aged 23.

Not relevant to her sexual identity I realise, only posting as she obviously struggled with her appearance at a young age and may have some hang ups about her body. She sees a therapist so hopefully understands that as a route to feeling happier, perhaps more so than surgical intervention? I hope she isn't full on TWAW when it comes to children. In an old Times interview she speaks of ambitions to be education secretary.

littlbrowndog · 03/01/2020 11:44

I don’t care what she does in her sex life long as it’s legal and consenual

But I don’t need to hear about it

But someone who admits to DV violence and is now partnered with cobb who was suspended from LibDems and has now left the LibDems

She does not seem like the person to be leader of LibDems

OhHolyJesus · 03/01/2020 11:40

It's here *Melrose's

Melroses · 03/01/2020 11:35

I am guessing ‘pansexual’ means you get to exclude certain groups from your sexuality without being a bigot as it is ‘love for an individual for who they are’ not because of how they identify. Whereas if you were a lesbian (or heterosexual) then love for an individual doesn’t apply to choosing relationships obviously

Hence the necessity to see into souls so that you know who the truly good are. Looks like she has got that one sorted. She will need to teach us.

Where do I find Sonia's videos?

That email thing Rosy Cobb allegedly did though. That's really quite an immoral and cynical thing to do.

NextdoorNeighbourIsATwat · 03/01/2020 11:19

Jeeeeez. So lesbian or bi then.

What's with the bleddy pansexual label? It just makes people sound as though they want to sleep with everything, including inanimate objects.

littlbrowndog · 03/01/2020 11:18

Cripes she said she hit her partner in a piece in London standard

littlbrowndog · 03/01/2020 11:12

Going to run and have a look at them stories posted on here

HorseWithNoAnecdotes · 03/01/2020 10:58

But if you scroll down and down, you will not see once mention of that word..

It's almost as if people are trying to erase the word.

Silly me for thinking that.

NeurotrashWarrior · 03/01/2020 10:58

molly, to clarify, there's more of a focus on what you look like and label yourself as that ever before rather than your talents, skills, achievements or just being a nice friendly person.

There are people who are celebrities simply because of their 'identity.' That's where the media comes in; I include tumblr as part of the melting pot of ICT.

Justhadathought · 03/01/2020 10:55

Fertile ground for comedy panel shows going forward......

Pan2 · 03/01/2020 10:49

Pansexual. Intrigued.

Well quite, overall. It's the self-absorbedness of it.

HebeMumsnet · 03/01/2020 10:45

Hi @donquixote. Sorry if that caused confusion. No, yours wasn't poking fun. We deleted yours because the last line read as though Rosie Cobb was implicated in the DV allegations - just infelicitous phrasing but we thought important not to let that stand. Do feel free to repost without that bit though.

MollyButton · 03/01/2020 10:43

Imo There's a need to be special and I blame TV and media.

Yes young people want to be special its part of growing up. I fortunately joined a slightly "out there" church. I have known others get this from racist organisations - this enlightenment came to me overhearing two National Front members on a bus once.
One of my DDs got it from Tumblr and deciding which of a myriad of "sexualities" she was. I really am not sure that TV or media are especially to be blamed, they are more followers of the "wokeness".

Layla at 37 should have grown out of this.
