Layla Moran: Potential Lib Dem leadership candidate becomes first MP to come out as pansexual

Quote: Ms Moran, 37, told PinkNews that she had not previously had same-sex relationships and was “surprised” to find herself attracted to a woman, but added: “Sometimes, when you meet the right person, it just kind of happens.”

She said she was more comfortable with the label “pansexual” than “bisexual” or “gay” because it referred to the idea of love for an individual person for who they are and not their gender or sexual identity.

The Fail is such a master of snide! I'm most happy Layla's le Creuset genderuality made print!

TirisfalPumpkin · 05/01/2020 10:03

Might make up a new sexuality wherein I'm attracted to everyone apart from Lib Dems.

Dishonesty, biphobia, authoritarianism and possibility of getting a Challenor. Cant' risk it.

SophoclesTheFox · 05/01/2020 09:53

Oh, I missed that, then!

Fair enough.

YourOpinionIsNoted · 05/01/2020 09:32

There's a text box off to the side (as I view it on my phone, anyway) that sets out the threats to journalists pretty clearly.

I pretty much don't care about being thrown up as the scapegoat if it means that the points we are making in here - ie, LM hiding behind her new exciting label - gets made to that many readers.

KatvonHostileExtremist · 05/01/2020 09:24

Lol, that article got her bang to rights. Good quotes too. She can shag who she wants, but it doesn't change the fact that her girlfriend is being investigated for some very dubious behaviour.

I can see her soul, and it's so transparent.

SophoclesTheFox · 05/01/2020 08:54

It could be that I read it before my coffee kicked in, youropinion, but the impression I got was “Mumsnet is mean to Layla because she has a girlfriend”.

I though it buried the lead a bit in that the stuff about the fraud came further down, and if I didn’t know what had happened, I’m not sure the article would have enlightened me on that front. And it seemed a little like they were saying “people are only concerned about it because yikes! She’s dating a woman”. I’d hate there to be any kind of association like that made, because Layla dating a woman is and should be the most unremarkable thing in this story.

Maybe now I’ve had my coffee I’ll read it again Grin

YourOpinionIsNoted · 05/01/2020 08:29

That's a very clever bit of reporting from the mail imo. They have managed to write a whole article about what Layla Moran's new girlfriend did, they legal threats to journalists, fake email, having to resign from the party without getting their hands dirty AND LM using her new pansexuality for woke points / distraction because all they're doing is reporting that LM is complaining about us nasty mums being horrid to her.

Plus they used the le cruseut joke.

Seems like pretty sensible journalism to me.

bellinisurge · 05/01/2020 08:18

So are activists now saying it should be GTQ+ rather than LGBTQ+, having tried to make sure women and their sexuality is removed from consideration or defined in terms of "non-women" - a term the Green Party uses.

SophoclesTheFox · 05/01/2020 07:48

Bit of a disingenuous one from the Mail, there.

Needmoresleep · 05/01/2020 04:21

Perhaps we should award BiscuitBiscuitBiscuit to those whose posts are quoted in the Mail.

The word 'bisexual' says precisely nothing about 'gender'.

WrathoFaeKlop · 04/01/2020 16:57

Bisexual reinforcing the gender binary

Bisexual is exactly what it says on the tin, it doesn't reinforce anything.

I rather like the portmanteau -
Gendernary, rhymes with ordinary.

What's not to like?

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 04/01/2020 15:25

A bi friend of mine was told by one of the woke folk she should identify as Pansexual because Bisexual was "reinforcing the gender binary."

Well, there's a good way to kill your libido stone dead right there. Hmm

eBooksAreBooks · 04/01/2020 14:33

She appears to be with a woman. So she's a lesbian. So any previous relationships with males are scrubbed-out of history and she gets a shiny-new decided-by-you label does she?

She's no more a lesbian than someone who enjoys a Greggs vegan sausage roll alongside the odd steak-bake is a vegan.

RoyalCorgi · 04/01/2020 14:13

But would fit quite nicely with Layla’s psychic gifts

Now that Derek Acorah has passed over, there's a vacancy for someone with her talents. Might be a better match for her skill set than leadership of the Lib Dems.

Binterested · 04/01/2020 14:06

Is it a bit like that one which is to do with only being attracted to clever people?

Goosefoot · 04/01/2020 13:05

Yes, like, "I'm really only attracted to their mind."

You wonder a bit about the self-awareness of someone who believes that.

I suppose though, to be fair, it might be that if someone in this position has in fact never really been attracted to women, they might just feel like bi-sexual gives the wrong impression.

It's always been a bit up in the air the extent to which we define sexuality as being about what people do vs what they feel. In normal life it's not usually an issue for people but it becomes a factor for example if you are doing scientific studies and you have to define your criteria carefully, many studies have been criticised for their definition and there are difficulties with all the choices.

Now that people re so concerned with creating themselves by describing their identity, perhaps it's to be expected that it becomes more and more specific?

RuffleCrow · 04/01/2020 10:56

There is an element of the desexualising of sexual attraction about pansexuality.

EmpressLesbianInChair · 04/01/2020 09:39

Any suggestion that a pansexual is someone who floats above the material world, in disembodied form, not seeing or noticing bodies is obviously nonsense.

But would fit quite nicely with Layla’s psychic gifts GrinGrinGrin

Justhadathought · 04/01/2020 09:36

I not certain I understand the difference between bisexual and pansexual

There is no difference other than the labelling. Both are open to sexual relationships with people of either sex, based on their attraction to them as individuals.

Any suggestion that a pansexual is someone who floats above the material world, in disembodied form, not seeing or noticing bodies is obviously nonsense.

Justhadathought · 04/01/2020 09:31

Pangender’ also used to be a thing, until someone pointed out identifying as all genders is colonialist as some are culture specific (2-spirit, etc) and only open to people from the culture. So suddenly these people’s innate and personal gender identities changed to accommodate this helpful call-out from Tumblr

Good Post!

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 04/01/2020 09:12

Homosexual/bisexual role models for our younger people? Brilliant, yes please.

Pansexual seems to be "I'm like a bisexual, but, I'd also shag someone who is gender fluid" - so is a conflation of sexual orientation and gender identity in one, confusing word?

Which gives us a Lib Dem who can't tell sex from gender, or sexual orientation from a wardrobe and feelings. How predictable.

The thing that's so irritating is her need to share this. Agree, it's a dead cat move, but, I'm pissed off that a senior female politician wants us to know who she might fancy in the future. That chat is fine when you're a teenage girl, really bloody disappointing from a woman in her position. FFS.

EverardDigby · 04/01/2020 08:36

I think true biphobia (not homophobia directed at bisexuals) is rare

There's a lot of you're easy type prejudice as mentioned by a PP, also individual partners of either sex being convinced you're going to run off with the opposite sex or feeling they're not giving you something you need, but the worst experience for me was being told as a teenager by the L&G community that bisexuals didn't exist (this was the 1980s/90s) and so trying to deny I was bisexual for 10 years, then when I finally had a relationship with a man losing most of my lesbian friends. The homophobia I experienced was never as damaging as that.

SophoclesTheFox · 04/01/2020 07:59

One day I would quite like to get up and not be disappointed by whatever the LibDems are up to. Yet again, today is not that day.

The relationship announcement has been beautifully framed to divert from the DV and the fraud, which is about the smartest thing we’ve seen coming out of the LibDems for a while. Sigh.
