Layla Moran: Potential Lib Dem leadership candidate becomes first MP to come out as pansexual

stumbledin · 03/01/2020 00:03

Quote: Ms Moran, 37, told PinkNews that she had not previously had same-sex relationships and was “surprised” to find herself attracted to a woman, but added: “Sometimes, when you meet the right person, it just kind of happens.”

She said she was more comfortable with the label “pansexual” than “bisexual” or “gay” because it referred to the idea of love for an individual person for who they are and not their gender or sexual identity.

She ran Jo Swinson's leadership campaign in 2019.

Anyone who can get a pig's bladder on a stick elected party leader clearly has talent.

AutumnCrow · 06/01/2020 19:58

I see Daisy Cooper is the Lib Dem spokesperson for justice and sport amongst other things. So it's reasonable to ask her about those things, especially around safeguarding.I

I do feel concerned about the capture of Hacked Off by Stonewall, though.

Daisy Cooper's wiki page says she ran Jo Swinson's leadership campaign in 2019.

MollyButton · 06/01/2020 19:31

Daisy might be worth contacting if people can calmly express their concerns especially if you live in St Albans. Just be careful not to come over as rabid as the TRA would like to paint those who are GC. But if she felt there was a lot of support on the issue...
I'm not 100% sure she has drunk the Kool Aid yet.

Melroses · 06/01/2020 18:22

So hacked off think Janice Turner = hacker Hmm

AutumnCrow · 06/01/2020 18:03

Oh fuck.

nauticant · 06/01/2020 16:43

perhaps someone to approach now with thoughts and ideas about safeguarding. She was (is)a big cheese in Hacked Off

Be cautious if you approach her:

hackinginquiry.org/demand-ipso-protect-targeted-groups-against-transphobia-in-the-press/

The linked report goes hard after Janice Turner.

Whenever I see that someone has anything progressive in their personal brand I assume they're going to be anti-GC. It's often a useful assumption.

slipperywhensparticus · 06/01/2020 16:33

I dont actually give a shit if she would do her job unfortunately it appears that what is inbetween her legs is priority

Mockers2020Vision · 06/01/2020 16:31

"pansexuality is bisexuality for narcissists."

I thought wanking was sexuality for narcissists?

AutumnCrow · 06/01/2020 16:26

I think Daisy Cooper (St Albans) is definitely 'one to watch' and perhaps someone to approach now with thoughts and ideas about safeguarding. She was (is)a big cheese in Hacked Off. She has supported many other Lib Dem women.

MollyButton · 06/01/2020 15:55

those lib dems at a local level who think they are doing the right thing.

A lot are doing the right thing at a local level - listening to people, working on local causes. Having local solutions.
Although I do know of one local part in the north (is relevant) who suddenly got emails etc. from a LibDem in the South arguing against their local policies - arguing they should be adopting ones like his local constituency, with zero local knowledge.
It's not just gender issues that some people think they know all the answers and no-one should even ask questions about.

bellinisurge · 06/01/2020 05:56

"pansexuality is bisexuality for narcissists."😂😂😂😂

ButterflyRuns · 06/01/2020 00:30

Just sounds like bisexuality to me but wish her and her partner all the best.

FordPrefect42 · 06/01/2020 00:28

In my humble opinion, pansexuality is bisexuality for narcissists.

They believe themselves to possess a moral high ground because they see the person before the person’s gender, or some BS.

Well, have I got news for you: there are only two genders.

birdsdestiny · 05/01/2020 21:38

But the mutterings internally are louder now. I dont think they will change yet but I think it's the beginning of the change. Still not a party I could vote for but I have it in me to feel a little sorry for those lib dems at a local level who think they are doing the right thing.

MollyButton · 05/01/2020 19:52

Those running the party seem to be in a strange bubble, failing to spot that Aimee Challenor was never going to be an asset, failing to understand what the big issues were, not understanding the need to avoid more toxic peripheral issues and so on.

And either ignoring, telling to shut up or threatening with disciplinary sanctions those who tried to highlight the issues

FloralFestiveBunting · 05/01/2020 13:52

Yes, I think people are seeing visions of a professionally run outfit and sharp savvy straight of The Thick of It. The LibDems seem to be operating on a slapdash, shoestring methodology of "Give 'em a go, how hard can it be?" naivety. Which is why you had that shitshow of an election campaign, with puddle deep analysis and policy ideas that look bold if you've thought them up in the pub at lunch time.

birdsdestiny · 05/01/2020 13:24

Because the reality is they are a small political party which makes them.vulnerable to this kind of thing. It's why until recently a small group of activists had a considerable hold on the party.

Needmoresleep · 05/01/2020 13:21

Add to the really poor campaign run by Jo Swinson.

She could have simply run a campaign that mirrored the Tories. No wide slate of policies. Simply a "our priority is Europe" type slogan, which gave voters a clear choice. They may then have squeezed through in a number of remain voting constituencies.

Opening up the TWAW debate was suicidal. My guess is that many voters were new to it and first reactions probably were that she sounded daft. (As Layla Moran will sound to many who have to google pansexual.)

Those running the party seem to be in a strange bubble, failing to spot that Aimee Challenor was never going to be an asset, failing to understand what the big issues were, not understanding the need to avoid more toxic peripheral issues and so on.

All of which allows Boris to play his hand free of significant opposition scrutiny.

RoyalCorgi · 05/01/2020 12:58

I can’t imagine what would cause someone with no press experience to be the best candidate for such a highly competitive job.

I am also hugely puzzled by this. Normally a job like that would go to a former national newspaper or broadcasting journalist - think people like Alastair Campbell and Guto Harri. You absolutely would not give it to someone who had neither journalistic nor PR experience.

So why did Rosy Cooper get given the job? Because it was such a terrible job no one else would do it? Because she knew the right people? Something very odd going on there.

Mockers2020Vision · 05/01/2020 12:45

Is there any credible talent within the Parliamentary LibDems?

Much muttering about Daisy Cooper (St Albans) as a potential Next-Leader-But-One.

Needmoresleep · 05/01/2020 12:41

Sunlight...

I hope the message is getting through that woke does not attract votes. Boris has a strong majority and has eliminated the obvious opposition from within his party and seems determined to rule by kitchen cabinet. I think we want/need good sensible articulate people leading opposition parties who will scrutinise and question his major economic and social policies, no matter whether they are het, homo, bi or pan. If the Mail has a motivation, other than to create click bait, I suspect it is this. There are lots within the Tories who are not 100% sold on Boris.

Is there any credible talent within the Parliamentary LibDems? The last election should have been a wake up call for them as much as Labour.

FlyingOink · 05/01/2020 12:08

There is an element of the desexualising of sexual attraction about pansexuality.

Well, there's also this: aroacefaq.tumblr.com/post/143810110365/the-split-attraction-model-what-is-it I'm waiting for the first demiromantic ace MP now.

I like the Mail story, glad the dodgy politics are being aired again.

MollyButton · 05/01/2020 11:54

The Lib Dem's still act as though they are tiny organisation with hardly any members. I got very few begging letters this general election, and they do seem to spend most of their money on campaigning, not much on HQ and infrastructure. Hopefully this is something Mark Pack will change as he seems to have his head screwed on.
They should get far more money from members and get some properly qualified and experienced staff, and not just provide "stop gap" jobs for those who want to be MPs etc.

Melroses · 05/01/2020 11:23

They do seem to like to jump into a little controversy, then regale us with every detail, in detail, as to how it got there.

ChattyLion · 05/01/2020 10:54

The more I read about this scandal at Lib Dem HQ the more i feel there must be a bit more to this story. I can’t imagine what would cause someone with no press experience to be the best candidate for such a highly competitive job.

Head of Press is an absolutely key role especially for a less prominent national political party in the run up to a General election and the impending Brexit debates- one of the Lib Dem’s key USP policy points.

You’d expect the Lib Dem’s Head of Press to be an established name who has previously run a few press offices, with a personal network of press contact relationships going back years. Plus a demonstrated grasp of both the political issues and the precision of judgement that usually requires years of experience to acquire.

Given the Lib Dems have had record numbers of new members joining since the 2016 referendum this is an even more high profile role. The party would have had their absolute pick of highly experienced candidates for it. It’s a very odd choice they made.
