The war on women continues:

The poor, poor woman. Facing a year in jail for being gang-raped.

Is there a link to the just giving/crowdfunded? Thanks

The men will never be tried in any case because they were allowed to go home. Israel wouldn't have sent them back.

AnneShirleyBlythe · 07/01/2020 07:37

Many of the protestors are Israeli women. One just spoke on camera and said no way would she be convicted in Israel for retracting her statement.

AnneShirleyBlythe · 07/01/2020 07:31

Sorry that should be 3 yrs not 4!

AnneShirleyBlythe · 07/01/2020 07:30

Just watching the sentencing on bbc news. She got 4 months suspended for 4 yrs. Loads of protestors outside court. They are waiting for the woman and family to come out. Her lawyer is expected to make a statement.

FrogsFrogs · 06/01/2020 19:58

Pardon means she's still done something wrong and the men will never be tried.

Good she gets to come home but really wtf are Cyprus playing at. Shout loud enough and the legal system goes your way?

It was Sam who gave the names to police of the others said to be involved. Among those he said was present was 18-year-old Yona Golub. He [Golub] was able to prove his innocence by producing a 'selfie' he had taken with his girlfriend while the alleged rape took place at the Napa Pambos Rocks hotel in Ayia Napa last July. Golub, from town of Afula, near Nazareth, said he still intends to sue the British teen for compensation and said he wanted to see the woman jailed.

Erm, Golub, it was your mate Sam who named you wrongly, you should be suing him. Or, better still, your name's clear, no one's blaming you so drop it, because the optics on chasing the lass for cash really don't look good for you.

Oh, of course, first rule of misogyny: women are responsible for what men do. In this case, a gang rape victim is responsible for a perpetrator's inaccurate police statement.

LangCleg · 06/01/2020 17:28

A presidential pardon in lieu of serving a prison sentence if one is imposed meets the most pressing issue, which is to get a suffering woman home. But it's not justice and the UK should not allow the pressure to drop in getting the conviction appealed/quashed.

On another note, according to the Guardian, easyJet, LastMinute.com and Expedia are still advertising the hotel concerned. Perhaps we should get emailing complaints?

Can't read the link because of my ad blocker. TBH although it's great she will be allowed to go home, a presidential pardon means that she is still guilty. She still has a criminal record so it isn't much help for her future career. I wonder if she can still appeal the verdict in future and clear her name.

DragonUdders · 06/01/2020 17:19

Another place I won't be visiting.

bd67th · 06/01/2020 17:17

Great that she's coming home. Not great that she gets a pardon because a pardon indicates guilt. What she needs is an acquittal on the basis of the conviction being unsafe.

Childrenofthestones · 06/01/2020 16:46

Great news. She is to get a presidential pardon and will be allowed to fly home tomorrow.

FrauleinF · 05/01/2020 21:14

The victim can now, on top of having to give up her degree, changing her career path as she now has a criminal conviction, and having her mental and physical health destroyed, also expect a civil case from one of the fine young Israeli gentlemen questioned by Cypriot police...

Because of course, it's men accused of rape whose lives are REALLY ruined...

Very apt.

Thanks for the link to the Crowd Funder, I was able to donate.
I haven't been able to find the petition, could someone post a link please?

BovaryX · 04/01/2020 20:27

This case is appalling. There is a good article about it in the Mail. The behavior of these guys is despicable, it’s quite incredible that their account has been accepted. This girl’s ordeal reflects extremely badly on Cyprus

AriadneAufNaxos · 04/01/2020 16:58

Is that because you couldn't think of a woman to use as an example?

Actually no. Off the top of my head, and not being acquainted with ferrier's friend, I couldn't think of anyone who has written so openly about being involved in the type of situation ferrier was proposing as being believable and realistic. Unlike ferrier's friend Lees is demonstrably a real person.

My point was that even where such a person exists the point ferrier was labouring , for no reason I could see, was completely irrelevant.

Fraggling · 04/01/2020 14:02

I also don't understand that example.

Why the need to compare 1 person and situation to a completely different one? It makes no sense.

OldCrone · 04/01/2020 13:58

I picked Paris Lees as an extreme example

Is that because you couldn't think of a woman to use as an example?

AriadneAufNaxos · 04/01/2020 13:56

I picked Paris Lees as an extreme example of how utterly nonsensical ferrier's posts about her friend are. Nothing in Paris Lees' past should be held against her if she were to find herself in this situation.

Thinkingabout1t · 04/01/2020 13:39

What a disgrace. Boycott Cyprus.

TeenageTerf · 04/01/2020 13:04

Oh my gosh. I believe her 100% - this is unfair. Flowers

HandsOffMyRights · 04/01/2020 09:54

Aria This young woman is a victim. Why do you feel it appropriate to use an example of a transwoman who went to prison for a violent crime?

In this article Lees talks about the thrill of attacking somebody. I can't relate to any of what Lees writes. In fact, it's bloody disturbing:

'I know the feeling. I wound up in prison as a teenager because I flew too close to the edge.

It was thrilling, actually, robbing someone. That doesn't mean I'm proud of it or that I didn't deserve to do my time. I feel remorse towards my victim now. It was a stupid teenage mistake and I'm sorry for it, but at the time, for a brief, glorious moment, I felt alive. It's why, in the fantasy worlds we create for our entertainment to transport us away from our supposedly civilized reality, we paint fiery scenes of destruction. We want to see people shot. Buildings blown up. We carve scenes of torment and pain into stone and line our places of worship with the resulting art. We want to be plunged into darkness and thrown up into the sky at amusement parks. We want so badly to be good that sometimes it just feels better to be bad.'

HandsOffMyRights · 04/01/2020 09:36

Still don't think that Paris Lees a good example of equivalence to use at all......*

Abso fucking lutely. It's insulting to that girl to use Lees as an example, for the reasons stated by Just

Some posters insist on derailing threads about women.

This thread is about a teenage female who was raped because of her SEX.
