Just that. A question on the Big Fat Quiz of the Year posed by drag queens, what are fishies.

Programme presented by Jimmy Carr. Participants Noel Fielding, someone who does the BA security videos, @AsimC86, Roisin Conaty, Maya Jama, MTV presenter and former girlfriend of Stormzy, Richard Ayoade and Dara O'Briain.
It would not be acceptable for any other group of people to be named accordingly to the supposed smell of their genitals, but it's ok when it comes to women, channel 4.

Yes agree about jealous behaviour kittens.

This fishies word is absolutely vile. It would be like calling men cheesies.

JellySlice · 28/12/2019 15:00

Jealousy definitely has a part in this. I remember gay friends in our 20s expressing their frustration when attractive men were unavailable because they were het. Some gay men would make the same class of jokes about converting het men as some het men would make about converting lesbian women. They displayed exactly the same sense of male entitlement.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 28/12/2019 14:31

Time spent with him was a constant stream of 'jokes' at our expense. I think there was another part of him that did like us but it couldn't compete with his misogyny. Luckily we didn't stay friends for long. I still feel afraid on some level when i think back on it though.

Honestly, this? Is jealousy, at least in part. The bloke who wrote the article for the Guardian touched on it and then retreated immediately, the sexual jealousy some gay men feel towards women. It's one of things that once you see it you can't unsee it, and start noticing how often it comes out as petty sniping and hypercriticism. I see it in the otherwise very intelligent Douglas Murray when he goes from incisive on other topics to nonsensical babble about the unfairly held sexual power of teenage girls, as a high profile example. Logically those men should be blaming the straight men who they see us as competition for for their lack of interest, but jealousy is never logical.

Someone will no doubt angrily report this comment and try to get it deleted but I really don't think we can talk about the relationship between gay men and women without acknowledging that dynamic. It's a significant part of what's going on with the way some transwomen who're attracted to men relate to women too, as well as the nonbinaries like Alok, Jacob Tobias, etc.

I’m confused by that too @Fraggling nothing against homosexuality being normalised at all and encourage it - what’s that got to do with drag and mocking women?

I interpreted it (possibly wrongly) as that C4 associate drag with gay culture and are trying to push the idea that disliking drag is unacceptably unwoke.

UpfieldHatesWomen · 28/12/2019 13:18

Here's a clip of Baga Chipz' 'Best Bits',
www.instagram.com/p/B5IQg50pvX5/
calling his female character a trollop, touching his supposed fanny then sniffing his hands (for 'fish' smell), talking about showing his minge repeatedly, saying 'shut your legs, there's a draught', talking about their 'tuppence' being on show, dressing up as Amy Winehouse and portraying her in the throws of her drug addiction for laughs (can anyone imagine a woman doing that for someone like Kurt Cobain and having anyone find it funny?), referring to bitches, commenting on the female guest's breasts etc. Besides being a poor effort at humour, it's the kind of misogyny no male comics would get away with.

zanahoria · 28/12/2019 11:57

and why did Bagachipz choose a name that is so obviously connected with fish?

Ereshkigal · 28/12/2019 11:49

That link upthread that said anyway fish is healthy and delicious..

A TRA or MRA troll a few months back tried to make a similar argument here, that some fish are attractive Confused

zanahoria · 28/12/2019 11:47

Ta Dana

but it should have been taking Bagachipz's vinegary comments with a pinch of salt

Ereshkigal · 28/12/2019 11:46

That's the hope.....that drag will be seen as normal; as a way of further mainstreaming gay culture and the social acceptability' of homosexuality. They hadn't bargained on any debate, discussion or criticism.

I also think they're trying to blur the boundary with transgenderism and mainstream that.

fridgegrazer · 28/12/2019 11:44

@zanahoria Grin

I have complained to Channel 4 - thanks to the pp who posted the link.

Fraggling · 28/12/2019 11:35

That link upthread that said anyway fish is healthy and delicious..

Ok so I'll walk up to women and work and tell them I can smell a fishy smell, and they're to take it as a compliment, that's right, I think

Fraggling · 28/12/2019 11:34

Homosexuality

Fraggling · 28/12/2019 11:33

What is wrong with homosexually being 'mainstream'???

yellowallpaper · 28/12/2019 11:30

Loathe that program and the presenter anyway, so no surprise they are prize pricks.

DanaPhoenix · 28/12/2019 11:23

Vile comments. Cannot believe a tv station allowed it.

Props to zanahoria perfect response.

zanahoria · 28/12/2019 11:04

I will take Bagachipz with a pinch of salt

zanahoria · 28/12/2019 11:02

Bagachipz claims never to have used the word before and only reading from a script but the whole point was that it is well known piece of drag slang.

Thus script or not, Bagachipz knew what the word meant and chose to go on TV and use it anyway

marmitedreams · 28/12/2019 10:56

Please complain to Ofcom not Channel 4. Channel 4 can just give us the brushoff.

Justhadathought · 28/12/2019 10:21

Tom Allen

Justhadathought · 28/12/2019 10:19

What's that guy called who does the Bake-Off after show...he's hideous and bitchy...disguised as comedy. That's what I'm talking about.

Justhadathought · 28/12/2019 10:18

Time spent with him was a constant stream of 'jokes' at our expense. I think there was another part of him that did like us but it couldn't compete with his misogyny

I know what you mean......it is as if the 'camp drag routine' becomes a full time way of navigating the world and human relationships. comments about body; about weight; about sex......often bordering on rude, offensive or just downright insensitive.

Justhadathought · 28/12/2019 10:14

I thought it was a disgusting thing to have in a quiz show. The fact it's so normal and accepted shocks me

That's the hope.....that drag will be seen as normal; as a way of further mainstreaming gay culture and the social acceptability' of homosexuality. They hadn't bargained on any debate, discussion or criticism.

RuffleCrow · 28/12/2019 09:22

That's so true @Justhadathought.

I had a gay 'friend' growing up who worshipped Madonna and was always going on about how gorgeous a model-like female mutual friend was. But the rest of us flawed females? He could barely disguise his contempt. Time spent with him was a constant stream of 'jokes' at our expense. I think there was another part of him that did like us but it couldn't compete with his misogyny. Luckily we didn't stay friends for long. I still feel afraid on some level when i think back on it though.

zanahoria · 28/12/2019 08:54

"The correct answer was that fishies are drag queens that pass as women"

but none of them do
