Feminism: Sex and gender discussions
WhereYouLeftIt · 24/12/2019 15:05

To all those saying 'Eew, we can't agree with anyone on the right, they'll contaminate us and we need to stay pure above all else' -

I came across this image on Twitter, and I think it sums up the position well. We all overlap. The right-wing traditionalists have as much in common with the TRAs as they do with feminists.

Tennessee bill ensures student athletes compete as per sex!

As the saying goes; a broken watch is right twice a day.

JellyfishandShells · 24/12/2019 13:46

Honestly, the implication that if you agree with someone on one thing, it leads that you agree with them on everything, is beyond tiring now.
This political tribalism is how they have managed to get us all so far beyond the looking glass

This, this, this

OvaHere · 24/12/2019 13:32

It's all very well TRAs pouring scorn on any feminist that so much as talks to any politician on the right but we need to remember that the trans/lgbt lobby had no issues doing back room deals with the same crowd to get what they wanted.

And in the US a number of very wealthy TRAs have donated to and are supporters of the R party.

BarbaraStrozzi · 24/12/2019 12:56

My point is not that we should only ally with those whose "ideological purity is beyond reproach" - I too despair of this sort of idiocy.

But we should be wary of people who, though they seem to be pushing in the same direction as us, may go off piste in a dangerous direction after the legislation we approve of has been passed.

Never forget the three-way split:

TRAs: Interests and personality don't match biological sex? Modify your body to match your interests.

Fundamentalists: Interests and personality don't match biological sex? Modify your personality to match your sex.

Feminists: What do you mean, "your interests and personality don't match your biological sex?" Why on earth should they? You're fine just as you are.

Thelnebriati · 24/12/2019 12:37

We need a similar law in the UK.

We have this law in the UK, its in both the Gender Recognition Act and the Equality Act. Its just not being enforced.

Floisme · 24/12/2019 12:32

Sorry cross post.

Floisme · 24/12/2019 12:31

I think we all realise that. My point is that I imagine TRA lobby groups felt exactly the same about the tory government and will have known they were just nodding along in order to rid themselves of their 'nasty party' image. It didn't stop them co-operating.

teawamutu · 24/12/2019 12:29

That's a v v good point, Flo.

Fraggling · 24/12/2019 12:22

It's not an implication that anyone is right wing.

My point is that neither the right or the left have any care for women at all and I find that scary.

Floisme · 24/12/2019 12:20

I appreciate that I'm not familiar with USA politics and that this guy may well be to the right of any mainstream UK party. Nevertheless did any trans lobby groups refuse to co-operate with the GRA consultation because they didn't want to 'align themselves' with a tory government?
Does anyone seriously think they're not lobbying Boris Johnson as we speak?

I share Fraggling's worries.

This guy is right on this (stopped clock and all that). A quick seach and check of his own home page produces (predictably) anti abortion, pro 2nd ammendment (right to bear arms), anti gay marriage (though also anti criminalisation of gay behaviour - what people get up to in their own bedrooms is their business).

But the right have all too often weaponised biological differences against us - I could see far right politicians twisting biology to defend firms sacking pregnant women, for instance. Or using population average differences between men and women to argue for blanket bans for women from some occupations, when a "can this person do the job" physical test would indicate some women were perfectly capable of it, albeit a lower percentage than men. (Incidentally, don't want to imply Giffrey holds any of these particular views - I don't agree with many of his views as stated on his web page, but I'm not seeing evidence that would make me place him in the "batshit crazy, re-implant dead ectopic pregnancies in the uterus" end of the spectrum).

misscockerspaniel · 24/12/2019 11:08

Yeah Smile I don't care if they are politically left or right - this is simple common sense. We need a similar law in the UK.

Fraggling · 24/12/2019 10:56

These are right wing old school Christian types aren't they whose preference is 'different but equal' with girls subservient.

I can't see a way for women and girls to win tbh these people aren't our friends either. We're under attack from the left and the right how did it come to this.

WomanBornNotWorn · 24/12/2019 10:53

Puuuuullllll ..... !

PreseaCombatir · 24/12/2019 10:51

“We are seeing more and more transgender athletes competing and posting victories in traditionally gendered sports competitions, and doing so to the detriment of girls and women biologically born female,” Republican state Rep. Bruce Griffey, the bill’s lead sponsor, told the Tennessee Star. “Boys and men, due to testosterone levels, bigger bone structure, greater lung capacity, and larger heart size, have physical advantages in sports relative to girls and women.”

Fucking hell, a law that understands biology? Can it be true?
