Gender identity in email signatures

And no, I don’t mean gender pronouns such as she/he/them/ze, etc.

I have started receiving emails from certain companies (I occasionally work in the Arts) with things like (cis; he/they) included in the signature.

As much as I think the whole thing is a load of bollocks, I can understand why some people would want to define their gender pronouns in social/professional settings. But why include ‘cis/trans’ in the email signature? Why does someone you have professional contact with (in a situation that doesn’t involve protection of vulnerable groups) need to know that?

What am I missing? Confused

I'm really confused - I thought trans people didn't want to be outed which is exactly what this does?

Wondersense · 18/12/2019 14:45

Also, this whole gender thing is so personal you might as well declare what your sexual orientation is at the end as well.

Wondersense · 18/12/2019 14:43

@SapphosRock That's right, but it's also about context. Nobody is making anyone sign off emails with gender declarations, but the uncomfortable thing is that some people do this because they believe that they are more virtuous that people don't do it.

For me, it's like someone signing off an email with 'Btw, I don't vote Tory'. Now, I don't really warm to the Tories either, but I wouldn't't have a good opinion of someone who signs off their emails in this way, even if I agree with them politically.

stillathing · 18/12/2019 13:36

It's maybe because, whilst TWAW in exactly the same way that black WAW and tall WAW (you bigot), it is important not to lose sight of the cis /trans binary. For reasons which will become clear if you read this thread from Maya Forstater

This is where we are heading if we accept the female gender identity that is currently being imposed upon us by, amongst many others, The Guardian, NHS, Met police and the Office for National Statistics.

I don't doubt life can be difficult for some males who do not fit masculine stereotypes. I can pretty much guarantee you that they are not affected by maternity discrimination, pregnancy from rape, period shaming and female social conditioning. No its not an oppression race and true intersectionality should give us all our voices. But with the cis/trans hierarchy, women's lived experiences seem to disappear in an instant.

Butchyrestingface · 18/12/2019 13:20

I really don't understand this. So their email sign off is 'Beverly Jones (she/her), Head of Sales'?

It’s

Beverly Jones
(cis - she/they)
Head of Sales

And it’s the ‘cis’ bit in particular that I am Hmm at.

I live in Asia and occasionally see something like Tan, Lim (Ms) which I find helpful as I didn't grow up in Asia and am not familiar with a lot of regional names.

The she/her thing (if that's how it's being written) just seems like they're trying to show how woke they are. Fucking bizarre bollocks.

bluebluezoo · 18/12/2019 13:00

It not appropriate, any more than it would be appropriate to create a culture where people are forced to declare if they are gay

This.

At my company it was a Sandy that prompted the team to do this for a while — after an Indian client assumed he was a she and offered him a job (which he accepted) in a women’s only nightshift IT team

Well i’d say that is because they didn’t do their due diligence- no interview? I’ve had to submit my birth cert or some verification of identity for every job I have had.

Especially if it’s a position where sex discrimination law doesn’t apply.

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 18/12/2019 12:53

If this becomes a thing, let's all write random words taken from the dictionary which we identify as.

What an excellent idea.

But if TWAW then surely we are all one homogenous group and there is no such thing as trans or cis?

There is something very individualistic and egotistical about this whole gender identity parade. You do you

It is narcissistic BS and I can’t help feeling it’s an attempt to compensate for profound mediocrity.

Surely this just adds an extra layer of potential confusion? I can actually understand the logic behind including gender pronouns, ever though I don't think it's appropriate to require people to sum up their relationship with "gender" - which may be incredibly personal - in their email sig... But if you saw one saying "Sam - trans/she/her" a lot of people would be trying to work out their natal sex and some might even assume they are a trans man about to transition (as there is a lot of public confusion about this). Why include more potential for head-scratching? Putting trans/cis strikes me as TMI and quite idiotic tbh.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 18/12/2019 12:42

It's no one else's bloody business, and in any case, who cares? It's not generally relevant to the way people do their job: any more than signing off emails gay, bi or straight.

There is something very individualistic and egotistical about this whole gender identity parade. You do you. I don't suspect anyone else is particularly interested unless it results in a direct infringement of their own rights.

If other people want to sign their emails off in this ludicrous way, that's a decision for them (and yes, I judge them for it). When I start making a song and dance about it is when someone starts trying to make me do the same. (Plot spoiler: I won't).

BTW, 'Jo Swansong' really made me laugh!

BovaryX · 18/12/2019 12:29

What unspeakable BS if Swansong goes to House of Lords🤮

Devereux1 · 18/12/2019 12:27

Yep, they're talking about this women don't exist / it's all about being fair but not to women joining the Lords.

Baroness Imbecile, or something like that I believe.

Hohonoshow · 18/12/2019 12:27

I'm pretty sure a trans man or woman would not like to have to include "trans" as part of their email signature either.

BovaryX · 18/12/2019 12:25

Please tell me Jo Swansong is not taking ermine?

Devereux1 · 18/12/2019 12:24

I'll change my sign off on emails to Stonewall, Jo Swinson and Angela Rayner

I agree this is analogous to making everyone write that they are gay/straight/lesbian/bisexual in their signature.
Or making everyone write details of their hidden disability or their religion.

Butchyrestingface · 18/12/2019 12:05

I am guessing the company / team might have had issues with clients being surprised by a colleague’s gender which is why everybody does it.

It’s a very small company, and they’re all “cis”.

I feel like emailing back to say I was triggered by the transphobic qualifiers in “their” email signature. 😈

OP posts:
Butchyrestingface · 18/12/2019 12:00

Why does it bother you? Some people like to share this info. Nobody is making you do it.

Because I think it’s totally unnecessary and if anything, could possibly lead to an assumption that anyone working for that company who doesn’t include “cis” in their email signature is therefore trans.

And that would presumably include transpeople who may not be out.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 18/12/2019 11:54

A second degree connection on LinkedIn has added his pronouns to his name.

So it reads "Mark Smith (he/his)" if he comes up in my feed or you search him, it's not just included as part of his bio/profile.

It makes me think he is a woke-signalling tit.

A: Because they'll tell you...
