Jess Phillips pile on on Twitter

It seems to have gone now, but I saw this morning on Twitter Jess Phillips MP, saying that the five gc questions to candidates seemed reasonable, there were some supportive tweets, and then there was a huge pile on from a lot of people saying TWAW and a certain amount of abuse.

Anyone know what happened here?

There are some very strange replies on that twitter thread, apparently Burgon has never been guilty of misspeaking or ‘thought crimes’. Christ.

Love Sooty.

Let’s hope that the Tories have enough self-preservation instinct to see proposed policies through the eyes of the red, now blue, wall. They have lost the cities so will need these voters next time round.

An unfettered Boris sounds truly awful. With no effective Parliamentary opposition he needs voters and his new MPs to be his conscience.

GCAcademic · 19/12/2019 18:23

Clive Lewis now in the running for leadership. Do I remember correctly that he was calling women TERFs on Twitter, or suchlike?

Poota · 19/12/2019 12:40

Just been reading a group of momentumite Corbyn groupies, in a group with 10k members, ranting that RLB is a traitor for mentioning the fact that many in the Jewish community don't trust Labour, and also claiming that any positive press about Starmer is proof that he is a plant and can't be trusted. Oh, and Jess Phillips is obviously a witch.

If these people have any sway at all, Labour is utterly fucked and anyone who holds out any hope for the resurgence of socialist, left wing politics might as well go off grid and live in a shed in the woods. These people are absolutely barking.

koshkat · 19/12/2019 11:29

Starmer ought to get it, but with the way the leader is chosen, I'm afraid Sooty Long-Bailey the Momentum puppet will walk it.

I hope it is RLB. Then she can preside over the death throes of this movement. Momentum are still not chastened. Then we need a Kinnock figure. Only once that work is done can we have a potential PM.

Im dreaming of a speech where the Kinnock figure denounces “the grotesque parody of the Labour Party - the LABOUR PARTY - telling women their fight for women is bigoted”.

BarbaraStrozzi · 19/12/2019 11:07

Sooty Long Bailey

Brilliant.

And yes, it's going to be a stitch up leading to whatever the far left equivalent of a coronation is.

Dear Labour Party Members - The Death of Stalin was a brilliantly funny black comedy, not a youtube "how to pick you next party leader" instruction video.

Ereshkigal · 19/12/2019 10:55

that it represents a black hole of need there that nothing will ever be able to fill. That realisation creates the freedom to see it for what it is and therefore step away from it.

This is the heart of the matter and everyone needs to wake up to this reality.

nauticant · 19/12/2019 10:32

The best person for Labour for the next few years would be someone who is able to hold the government to account. Someone good at arguments and good at presentation. Since Labour are going to be away from power for quite some time, being an effective opposition would be the best thing they could do in the national interest. It would help them gain respect in the eyes of the public.

Alternatively they could spend the time putting in front of the public unconvincing puppets who are have been picked for their usefulness in an internal civil war.

Gone2far · 19/12/2019 09:35

I think it's pretty likely that Starmer will get it, given how rubbish or tainted the female nominations are. Which is hilarious.

Micaela64 · 19/12/2019 08:56

A lot of the stuff brought up on this thread is why I think it's marginally preferable to be a female politician in the Conservative Party

I agree and most of the Labour women got in through quotas so they tend to be less capable. No doubt they'll push for a female leader but everyone suggested so far strikes me as rather lightweight and deluded. I might back Liz Kendall or Harriet Harman if they stood.

Future letter from a Labour government:

"Sorry, there's no money left, but at least it was spent by a cervix haver!"

theflushedzebra · 18/12/2019 23:09

Wes Streeting was definitely involved in that list of Labour women - I remember him being up to his neck in it, along with Lily Madigan - who also denies it now, I believe. Because that list was all kinds of wrong.

They also added Lisa Muggeridge - who was nothing to do with the Labour Party Hmm

Now Wes fancies himself as a future leader, huh? Well, must deny all knowledge now, eh, Wes!

OvaHere · 17/12/2019 14:38

A lot of the stuff brought up on this thread is why I think it's marginally preferable to be a female politician in the Conservative Party. Obviously all women MPs are subject to sexism and tokenism in the political sphere but I suspect currently being a Tory MP allows for slightly more freedom of opinion.

If I was a woman with an eye on a political career currently I'm not sure I'd want to join the Labour Party.

Lordamighty · 17/12/2019 14:13

I quite like Jess but she would probably be better to sit this fight out & enter the fray when the conditions are better in the future. The Labour Party are up shit creek without a paddle at the moment.

GCAcademic · 17/12/2019 13:22

Here is the thread re. Wes Streeting (from a couple of days ago):

ARoombaOfOnesOwn · 17/12/2019 13:14

Wes used to work for Stonewall. But he if is climbing down then that’s probably a good thing, despite the enormous hypocrisy.

NoNameIsBeingAccepted · 17/12/2019 13:01

Jess is completely vacuous...all she stands for is herself.

She craves media attention for her self promotion and bringing down of the Party she is meant to be a part of...backed by Murdoch and Lord Ashcroft, and chummy with Rees-Mogg, it's hardly surprising.

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 17/12/2019 12:56

Wes Streeting is now trying to distance himself from that "Labour Against Transphobia" Facebook page he was a member of, and which was compiling lists of gender critical party members. Apparently he wants a balanced discussion which respects everyone's rights!

Has he said something recently?

He's one of the worst, in my view.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 17/12/2019 12:44

from what I have heard so far Labour have learned absolutely nothing from their election defeat.

Yep. They seem unable to parse it as being at least in part their responsibility. Which is to say, something they can address and potentially overcome. So they won't be a viable opposition until they own the defeat, and perhaps start asking questions instead of shouting louder.

koshkat · 17/12/2019 12:26

Bloody hell. The thought of her up against BJ at PMQ is horrifying. It will be a blood sport.

Pepvixen · 17/12/2019 12:26

I'm pleased if Streeting et al renounce their previous association with extreme trans activists. We need to make the path back to a reasonable position an easy one. It would make it easier for people like Jess to take a female centred position.

BarbaraStrozzi · 17/12/2019 12:18

I like a lot of what Jess Phillips says and does, but I don't think I've trusted her since she likened the Cologne attacks to Birmingham New Street on a Saturday night.

I agree it will be a Momentum stitch up - Long Bailey is a shoo-in. Though as noted this is probably a good thing: Boris will spend a couple of years making mincemeat of her at PMQs (it'll be like Swinson on Woman's Hour only worse) then the Labour Party will have to come up with someone electable by the next election.

Short term, it's a bad thing as the country really needs a functioning opposition to hold the government to account as Boris is planning some seriously scary changes (undermining the concept of an independent civil service, narrowing the cabinet till it looks more like a Politburo).

nauticant · 17/12/2019 12:13

It's best to accept that for the gender identity issue leaders of the Labour party will be followers and not leaders. Unless the Labour party changes significantly.
