"Popular on Etsy- Submissive Kit"

So I click on Etsy looking for some last minute Christmas gifts and when I'm about to type "Homemade jewellery" into the search bar, a "Popular Searches" list appears and the first one is "Submissive Kit"

www.etsy.com/ie/search?q=submissive kit&ref=trnd1

Pages of bondage gear, gimp masks, wtf? Is this more depressing internalised porn culture and "Submissive Kit" actually is the most popular search on Etsy, or is something creepy going on with their algorithms? Because I'd hate to think of someone like my young daughter stumbling on this if she wanted to search for an embroidery kit. It's horrible.

ACat I don't think the problem is kink in the bedroom, the problem is sex/kink stuff coming up as results from the most unrelated searches.
Sex stuff in its place isn't a problem; pervasive sex stuff everywhere else starts to look like a pattern. If consent is so important why do I see so much of this stuff when my searches are clearly non-sex, non-kink-related?
I buy vintage on Etsy and suddenly there are photo of bulging crotches in women's underwear. I mean really suddenly, I've been using Etsy for years and this is something I've only seen in the last month or so.

ACatWhoBinds · 19/12/2019 02:43

@Antibles I see where you are coming from but if explored in a safe place (safe words, limits, etc not like 50 shades of grey which is hella problematic) I don’t think it’s too bad.

I’ll admit I am into BDSM, so maybe my viewpoint is skewed, but for all my teenage years I thought I was disgusting and horrible. I hated myself so much, and I was already depressed so that didn’t really help much! Being able to explore some of it in a loving relationship has helped me come to terms with myself and what, to put it crudely, turns me on. But the important thing is consent. That’s the big part.

I got this list. Does somebody else use your computer? If so, I'd be asking questions

Kinks which normalise violence against and degradation of women? No, not in favour funnily enough.

Bloody hell, this has just reminded me that I was searching for underwear online the other month (on a website not a general google) and got a search result with a picture of a woman in a pose and equipment that must clearly have been a kit of this nature. FFS.

And that sofa thing is grim nopockets

ACatWhoBinds · 19/12/2019 02:04

So do you not agree with kinks? I get not wanting your kid to see it but the internet is full of stuff like that. I mean just look at all the brony stuff 🙃 If consenting adults want things like that though, surely that’s alright?

nopocketsgrr · 17/12/2019 20:29

It is being pushed on us and normalised. I was searching for a sofa on eBay the other day.. sorted by nearest first and it turns out 15 odd miles away there are umpteen 'sex sofas' all with pretty explicit photos and references to BDSM.

Shouldn't be happening.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 16/12/2019 22:11

Algorithm are written by people. There's no reason why searches for non kink stuff have to bring up kinky results, and yet people are saying they consistently do.

peachgreen · 16/12/2019 21:59

Someone in your household has searched for something related.

Antibles · 16/12/2019 21:56

I think it's being pushed on us if this stuff didn't used to come up when you weren't searching for it and now it is. It's being deliberately normalised.

RochelleGoyle · 16/12/2019 21:41

I agree that this isn't the kind of result you'd want a child to come across but to be fair, I don't see how it's other people pushing their kinks on others either Prodigal. Surely the top searches are determined by what is being searched for and/or cookies and algorithms?

HunnyMummy1993 · 16/12/2019 19:36

I am the least submissive person you ever met I told him I'd end him if he tried to dominate me so off he went

Sorry to make light of your break up, but the way you worded that is bloody hilarious.

ItsNearlyMorning · 16/12/2019 18:20

I was searching for pull up nappies for my 10 year old DS , who is over 5ft and severely disabled.
Amazon gave me a selection of adult baby gear ( including plastic covered pants ) butt plugs , dildos , nipple clamps etc
Honestly couldn't believe my eyes.
I'm not a prude by any means but when I'm looking for nappies for an older disabled child I don't want to see pictures of hairy men in fetish clothing !

EndoplasmicReticulum · 16/12/2019 18:10

I think it is depends if you have used Etsy before - and what you have looked for. Etsy forums have posts from people who have searched for bras, or earrings, or cosmetics - and then ended up with BDSM stuff recommended. I think their algorithm tends towards the pornified.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 16/12/2019 18:07

Yep, that's definitely what you'd want to give all your friends and family for Christmas. Xmas Angry If people could just stop pushing their kinks on others that would be lovely.

madcatladyforever · 16/12/2019 18:04

I roll my eyes when I see this, my husband left me for this lifestyle after 20 years of marriage and now swans about London in all the gear the middle aged twat.
I find the whole thing so utterly boring. he wanted me to be his sub, I am the least submissive person you ever met I told him I'd end him if he tried to dominate me so off he went.

ImportantWater · 16/12/2019 18:02

Maybe it depends on what other people are looking for at that moment. I just got anti tory, eat the rich and eco friendly something or other.

PhilbricksCat · 16/12/2019 17:59

I believe you got this but it's still down to an algorithm/ hidden cookie/ cache on your piece of kit otherwise every one would get the same result.

pachyderm · 16/12/2019 17:55

Thanks The ChampagneGalop, some people are really invested in not believing meAngry

I just logged out and cleaned my browser, and still got "cage harness" as a suggested search. Which means anyone could get BDSM-related suggestions.

PhilbricksCat · 16/12/2019 14:05

Don't know. I didn't need to use one.

TheChampagneGalop · 16/12/2019 14:04

Is there a view or hide adult items setting on Etsy? I can't find it.

PhilbricksCat · 16/12/2019 13:56

I used my phone's native browser, Chrome and Puffin browsers. None of them came up with anything remotely resembling these offensive items.

PhilbricksCat · 16/12/2019 13:50

It obviously has something to do with your settings/ past browsing history/ algorithms. I only use a phone and got the completely innocuous list.
