Mermaids - need help

I’m hoping to peak trans my lovely friend who is a senior manager at a big (huge) organisation and recently sang to me the praises of her E&D manager, who is a stunning & brave TW who transitioned as a child and is pushing Mermaids as her saviour and an organisation everyone should be praising and following. Oh, how fun that was.

Friend is one of my oldest and a truly wonderful woman, highly intelligent and a good person. She just hasn’t encountered this issue before and I need to point her in the right direction.

Got very over excited at dinner the other night and I think I scared her. Now need to back up my diatribe with some pertinent facts, calmly delivered....

Point 3

The increase in numbers of trans identifying kids is huge, and we don't know why. Government has called for an enquiry into the 4000% increase in girls identifying as boys.

Attempts were made to surpress academic work pointing to social contagion as a potential cause.

journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0202330

Mermaids approach to wholesale affirmation means that every child that says they are trans, really are. They are going into schools and pushing this agenda.

Everyone should be able to express their gender how they see fit. But sex changes are adult decisions. 20% of gender non conforming kids will grow up and still have gender dysphoria. For them, medical pathways may be the best thing.
You don't throw the 80% under the bus though. Especially when you've no idea about the reason for the explosion in numbers.

Bonus fact. A large number of "trans" kids are on the autistic spectrum.

And I believe many others, would grow up to be gay adults.

sashh · 10/12/2019 09:55

For me it is simple, ass a feminist I want to see an end to gender.

I don't care who wears a dress to work or what they call themselves, I do object to children being experimented on because of the toys they choose to play with.

Debbie Hayton is a trans woman who doesn't buy the TWAW ideology.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 10/12/2019 09:49

Given that we still have no idea what "pausing" puberty does to cognitive development, how can anyone justify it?

happydappy2 · 10/12/2019 09:46

How about recognising the truth that there is NO such thing as a trans child. Only adults around that child telling them they are trans and trapped in the wrong body. If a young child suspects they might be gay and have homophobic parents, trans is the preferred option.
Puberty is an essential part of growing up and maturing, to mess around with the normal healthy development process is harmful, many would say child abuse. Think of the thousands of young girls on the autistic spectrum who are being trapped in this insanity.
Lastly, follow the money-pharmaceutical companies stand to make a fortune is cross sex hormones and lifelong medical patients.

She might be able to read this, it was in the times

Point 2
They advertised the services of Helen Webberly on their website even after she'd been suspended by the GMC.

Mermaids see puberty blockers as a "pause button" . Webberly illegally prescribed children as young as 12 with blockers.

Others, like the professor of evidence based medicine at oxford university, maintain there is no evidence these drugs are safe

blogs.bmj.com/bmjebmspotlight/2019/02/25/gender-affirming-hormone-in-children-and-adolescents-evidence-review/

Why would a charity push for an unproven medical treatment on children? Why would they link to a suspended doctor?

TalkingintheDark · 10/12/2019 09:42

I would approach it from the safeguarding angle, as that’s your area.

The transing of children. Gender dysphoric children being given puberty blockers when they’re not old enough to give informed consent to the consequences, including being a lifelong medical patient and sterility, given that they virtually all go on to cross sex hormones at 16 - while 80% of gender dysphoric children overall will desist.

Taking away girls’ right to single sex spaces, sports teams etc. Why should girls have to get changed in front of someone they know to be male? Why should a girl lose out on a place on a team (and all that goes with it - including recognition in the school, trips abroad, UCCA application benefit, as well as the obvious health and fun parts) because a boy “identifies as a girl”?

We know that levels of sexual harassment in schools are stratospheric (as they are in the wider world) so why are we taking away girls’ rights to boundaries? Why are we giving them conflicting messages that they are entitled to say no to some males, but have to put the feelings of one group of males ahead of their own? Why are we teaching them that their needs matter less and should be subordinated to this group of males’ needs?

Then there’s ROGD, the 4000% rise in the numbers of girls identifying as trans as teenagers, the social contagion aspect, the frequency of co-morbid MH issues including ED’s/body image issues, and of autism. A generation of girls being failed, as the growing detransitioner community attests.

Finally, there’s the whole issue of how safeguarding must apply to everybody - without exception, to borrow a phrase from Stonewall - to be worth anything, and yet we currently have a system where if a male juvenile or adult self-declares as trans, they are apparently exempt from all the normal safeguarding practices. This is particularly dangerous and sinister, and smacks of the Savile type of “untouchability”.

I would really focus on that massive contradiction between current safeguarding culture and best practice, and the “sacred caste” aspect whereby nothing trans-related is examined or held up to scrutiny the way it would be if it were any other area.

So: a massive medical experiment taking place on minor children, who are effectively guinea pigs; the erosion of girls’ rights and boundaries and of their belief in their right to have boundaries; and the weakening of our entire safeguarding culture. There’s your three main points for you to elaborate on or summarise as you see fit!

KatvonHostileExtremist · 10/12/2019 09:37

Point one.
I'd ask why mermaids changed their advice so rapidly, from watchful waiting (as evidence points to 80% of trans children, actually grow up to identify in their birth sex) to total affirmation and often a medical pathway?

This quote from a mumsnetter discusses this, and links to the mermaids old website;
"From 2009
Active Mermaids members are mainly parents or young people - some of our children are transsexual, some are not. Some of our children have attended the Gender Identity Development Service of the Portman Trust, two of whose clinicians are in an advisory position on our Committee.

Perhaps also it might go some way towards explaining transgender issues in adults, such as transvestism, and transsexualism - each adult transgendered person was once a gender variant child, but please never forget: a gender variant child or teenager will not necessarily grow up to be a transgendered adult.

Gender isn't an issue for 3-year-olds: If your son enjoyed dressing in a clown outfit and one day announced that he was a clown, you wouldn't worry that he was going to want to wear nothing but clown suits when he was 12, would you? And even if your son develops a lifelong predilection for dressing in women's clothing, it may interest you to know that most cross-dressing males are heterosexual.

The bottom line: This is nothing to worry about. Announcing that he is a girl is no more significant than our daughter Amy announcing at age 3 that she was Jennifer. Within a year, Amy was again telling people her name was Amy, and within a reasonably short time your son will let go of the "I'm a girl" thing.

Mermaids 2011:
A child becomes aware of its gender identity before or around the age of five years, in many cases as early as 2 or 3 years of age. In most people their gender identity is the same as their sex, i.e. a woman or girl feels she is female and a man or boy feels he is male, but in a few people their gender identity and their sex do not match, and this can cause problems.

Interesting change in tone over those two years (and much fancier website) along with new aims:
Offer support to parents, families, carers and others.
Raise awareness about gender issues amongst professionals (e.g. teachers, doctors, social services. etc.,) and the general public Campaign for the recognition of this issue and an increase in professional services. "

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 10/12/2019 09:12

I wanted to be a wolf for a while. Maybe someone should have offered tooth extension surgery.

ItsChristmaaaaaaaaas · 10/12/2019 09:09

This was my sister and yes, I believe she would have jumped at the chance to be a boy. I was the little impressionable sister who copied her (and she always got me into scrapes) so god knows what I would be doing now.

This is what makes me cross - the idea that a do-Gooder could have overheard us playing as kids (with our ‘boy’ play names) and set the wheels in motion.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 10/12/2019 09:05

What damage is being done to little girls who reject link and frilly - and are just girls who reject pink and frilly?

That was me as a child. Never had the slightest desire to be a boy, would have been greatly harmed if I'd fallen into the hands of the Woke Sexists. As many others like my younger self are being harmed right now.

ItsChristmaaaaaaaaas · 10/12/2019 09:01

The fact that tomboys (who may or may not grow to to be lesbians) are being offered options to ‘be a real boy’? What damage is being done to little girls who reject link and frilly - and are just girls who reject pink and frilly?

The surgeon in the US (I forget her name) who has performed around 200 breast operations on little girls ‘no they are boys’ - her attitude is truly chilling. She is so very very certain that these little girls are actually little boys.

ALittleBitofVitriol · 10/12/2019 08:58

The good old Barbie - G I Joe scale is pretty helpful. Why should children be medicalised according to such a sexist scale?

ItsChristmaaaaaaaaas · 10/12/2019 08:58

But she doesn’t have to take one ‘success story’ as a template for the treatment of the masses of children now being presented to clinics. Why this particular group - if they are an adult be and trans ed as a child (what does this actually mean?) then this group would not have been in the picture back then.

This is one persons story. And with so many people - you don’t really know what they think or how they feel.

It’s the office place. Why are these discussions even necessary? How are they relevant? It is a minefield - anyone who queries the process or TWAW mantra are demonised and have been reprimanded/forced out of their jobs as a result. Does this sound normal?

Fieldofgreycorn · 10/12/2019 08:50

So your friend is happy to be working with an intelligent, employable well functioning trans woman who transitioned as a child and made a success of her life?

Perhaps your friend is calmly delivering pertinent facts to you.

ItsChristmaaaaaaaaas · 10/12/2019 08:31

So a colleague is a transsexual. So what? Is that their whole meaning in life?

This group has a record of not considering a child presented to them and assuming that yes, the child is ‘trans’ based on a pretty sexist view of gender, and that this is ‘fixed’ by a medical route. Does this sound ok?

The dramatic rise in number of children going down this route, the % if those having autism and/or being girls, detransitioners now speaking up, what happened to ‘tomboys’? The violent language and actions threatened to those who question?

Clymene · 10/12/2019 08:06

Mermaids advocate a medicalised route for children who are confused about their gender, despite evidence that children who do not take a medicalised route often desist.

They advertised the services of Helen Webberly on their website even after she'd been suspended by the GMC.

rodgmum · 10/12/2019 06:47

They promote a removal of safeguarding and work to isolate children from their parents at school where the parent might wish to take a more cautious approach - I.e. they push positive affirmation at schools whether or not the parents agree.

You can get them to say quite a lot on their webchat, like here when they told “me” school staff shouldn’t tell parents anything about their child being trans unless that child wants them to- can lead to a teacher(s) affirming and reinforcing the ideology on the child behind the parents’ backs.

Ask her if she thinks it’s okay that a powerful lobby is influencing politicians whilst deliberately avoiding public debate and media scrutiny? The reason for the secrecy is their agenda has no popular support. Is that democratic? Ask her if she thinks it’s okay people are sacked for a belief in biological sex. Does she value freedom of thought? Freedom of speech? Tell her to google Maya Forstater and Harry the Owl. Show her the article below.

theflushedzebra · 09/12/2019 22:56

I think the thing that always gets me about Mermaids is how reliant it is on gender stereotypes.

It's all about what toys they like, what hairstyle - long or short! - what clothes they want to wear.

Mermaids answer to a child saying they want to be a 'girl' or a 'boy' is to change the child's body to match the appropriate gender stereotype - rather than just saying "fuck me, you can be a girl, and like football and have short hair, and even call yourself Tom, all you like!" - but to introduce powerful drugs like puberty blockers - at such a young age - is that the right thing to do? I think not.

The pathway Mermaids take is 100% affirmation - and they endorse puberty blockers - which in almost all cases lead to a medical pathway including cross sex hormones and surgery.

Yet substantial evidence shows that around 80% of children, when left alone, "watchful waiting" (ie without puberty blockers), and given counselling, and allowed to present how they like - will desist.

I find it so, so disturbing how Mermaids push affirmation and puberty blockers. I feel sure that puberty - while often distressing - is an essential thing to go through - linked to brain maturation, not just the secondary sex characteristics development. Puberty blockers have been linked to an inhibited cognitive function too. None of this is good IMO.

I would also mention the whistle blowers at the Tavi, the resignations, and Marcus Evans, the top bod at the Tavi who resigned over this.
