How can you be non binary if there are more than two genders?

If you actually self identify as non binary, what are you really saying?

Obviously you don't believe there are just two sexes, male and female, as otherwise you would agree that you are whichever sex your body actually is.

But if you believe there are several genders then you can't be non binary because genders are not binary.

I think that if you say you are non binary you are, by default, admitting that there are just two sexes and you acknowledge that you are one of them.

So how is any of that part of being transgender?

Quite.

NotDavidTennant · 30/11/2019 13:04

You're wasting your time looking for logical consistency in something that's not rooted in logic.

HarrietTheFly · 30/11/2019 12:53

Gender is a spectrum not a binary but I am non-binary, just like everyone else must be because gender is a spectrum not a binary, but I'm a special non-binary kind of gender whereas most people are a more binary kind of gender on the gender spectrum that is not a binary.

Everyone has a gender identity. Though some people are agender/gender neutrois/have no gender so they don't have a gender identity but everyone has a gender identity because that's a rule.

means normal girl/boy but believing stereotypes

BovaryX · 30/11/2019 12:44

And the phrase itself is just so irritating. It strikes me as the sort of thing people who are milquetoast conventional say to make themselves more interesting. It’s regressive because it reinforces gender stereotypes, it certainly doesn’t challenge them

Doyoumind · 30/11/2019 12:41

So stupid that they don't see the value of addressing and challenging gender stereotypes to allow anyone to wear what they want or do what they want whatever sex they are and instead decide to be their own special category.

TirisfalPumpkin · 30/11/2019 12:40

It requires a set of really regressive beliefs:

  1. Everyone has a gender identity.
  2. The vast majority of the population not only have a gender identity that 'matches' their sex, but are also happy and comfortable with it (usually categorised as 'don't even think about it', reinforcing their mundane, dull nature)
  3. Therefore, most people are 'binary', but by having a thought or reading a Tumblr post that sets you apart from this kind of conformity, you can be special, different and uniquely oppressed.

I think this is why they get so upset over the gender-free movement, as it involves a lot of people they've put in the box of 'unthinking binaristic female like my mum' expressing core non-binary beliefs, and that injures their specialness.

Fairenuff · 30/11/2019 12:38

I thought non-binary was saying no gender defines you and you do not subscribe to any 'category' description or definition.

But then why use the word 'binary'. It's totally inappropriate when you apply it to multiple genders.

Because none of this horseshit makes any sense, so there's no reason to expect it to be consistent.

TowelNumber42 · 30/11/2019 12:27

They don't identify with either the male or female stereotypes in their social setting. They think that other people perform parts of those stereotypes because they deeply identify with them.

You see a lot of non-binary young women. Not old ones. Old ones are gender critical instead. The young ones still think that older women are oppressed by the patriarchy out of choice. If we wanted we could have behaved differently and not been trapped into the oppressive female gender expectations.

That we somehow ended up here is probably down to us identifying with the female stereotypes. What other explanation is there? People can be anything they want to be. We must have wanted this.

They don't want that oppression so hey presto call themselves non-binary and they are exempt from societal expectations and everyday oppression of women.

It is going to be a right rude awakening for them. I bet we'll have an influx of them on Relationships and AIBU in a couple of years.

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 30/11/2019 12:20

If gender is not tied to sex then theoretically is it not possible for there to be hundreds of genders?

That's my understanding.

I thought non-binary was saying no gender defines you and you do not subscribe to any 'category' description or definition.

OldCrone · 30/11/2019 12:18

It just means they don't identify as either male or female.

But male and female aren't 'identities'.

PeterRouseTheFleshofMankind · 30/11/2019 12:17

Because its all a load of stereotypical bollocks.

All 'non-binary' people are either male or female. To say you 'don't identify as male or female' is to say that anyone who isn't 'non-binary' fits neatly into stereotypical boxes of what it is to be male or female.

It's so regressive.

reginafelangee · 30/11/2019 12:14

It just means they don't identify as either male or female.

Doyoumind · 30/11/2019 12:13

It doesn't even mean gender non-conforming. Have a look on Twitter and you will see plenty of NBs who totally conform to a gender stereotype.

JanesKettle · 30/11/2019 12:11

It's just a new, less fun way of being androgynous.

There's no internal consistency in any of this, so don't do your head it looking for it.

We all know there are not hundreds of genders.

APerkyPumpkin · 30/11/2019 12:00

It isn't. It means you are very special, damaged or a narc.
