Very pro the "woke" agenda and trans womens rights, whilst coercing indigenous females into having sterilisation
www.cbc.ca/radio/thecurrent/indigenous-women-kept-from-seeing-their-newborn-babies-until-agreeing-to-sterilization-says-lawyer-1.4902693

I'm properly shocked by this article. How can a civilised country even countenance this?

From what I understand, the coil and other contraception's, are suggested. Suggesting sterilization is only in extreme cases.

The men aren't usually the ones in the hospital giving birth, or the ones that come in contact with Child Services regularly. They've already fucked off, which is an entirely different issue.

exLtEveDallas · 27/11/2019 08:57

start spouting falsehoods and lies on a public forum

What falsehoods and lies are there?

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 27/11/2019 08:57

I don't think there's any context that would make the system bullying women into sterilization acceptable to me.

breakfastpizza · 27/11/2019 08:56

Rachel McKinnon.
Mixed sex prisons where they're having to hand out the morning after pill.
Shutting down women's rape crisis centres.
Shutting down lesbian book shops.
Anymore, anyone?
Canada couldn't really get much worse.

All of these things (and more) are happening in the US, Aus, UK, NZ, etc. to various degrees.

The native story is a big deal and deserves attention.

QuentinWinters · 27/11/2019 08:53

Again, why not suggest a long acting contraceptive, like the coil? Why not suggest vasectomies to heroin addicted men?

Why on earth would you even attempt to defend the practice of sterilizing First Nations women then (or indeed any other women)? I'm honestly baffled.

Not defending the hospitals who bullied the women into doing it. That's horrific. I'm trying to provide context, however, on why they were probably bullied.

breakfastpizza · 27/11/2019 08:52

Canadian society hasn't got a great record on women's right

Compared to? Canada always ranks well above the US in 'best country to live' and is usually in the same range as the other big Commonwealth players.

There is an issue with natives. It's hugely complex. A lot of money is thrown at it. The US is the same, but they don't give a shit about their native peoples, so you never hear about it. At least Canada tries.

QuentinWinters · 27/11/2019 08:52

Why are you angry at a bunch of brits on a forum, and not at your government for treating women like this?
You sound like you think this forced sterilisation was somehow justifiable. I'm shocked by that. I haven't seen anyone lying here. If there are lies, then post the facts (with links if poss) to show why its lies

it's not unusual for social services to suggest that the women be sterilized

The women this is suggested to are usually drug/alcohol addicts who have had multiple children taken from them at birth. It's not enforced.

Again, as someone who grew up involved with the Social Services system, and who has seen the damage done to these children. I don't think suggesting a women consider sterilization rather than having a 6th heroin addicted child, is necessarily a horrible suggestion.

But go ahead, rage away.

HulksPurplePanties · 27/11/2019 08:48

And a disproportionate number of them were First Nations.

A disproportionate number of the prostitutes are First Nations. There a myriad of reasons for this.

As for brushing it off, as someone who is half Mikmaq I can assure you I don't brush this stuff off. What pisses me off is when a bunch of Brit's, who's ancestors created the problem in the first place, start spouting falsehoods and lies on a public forum.

QuentinWinters · 27/11/2019 08:47

it's not unusual for social services to suggest that the women be sterilized

Even this is out of order. It is not up to social services to police how many babies women have.

Sure, if a woman doesn't want more children, then she could discuss sterilisation with a doctor.

But if she does want more, then why not suggest long acting contraception e.g coul instead?

Also, why is it women that are getting this? Vasectomy is cheaper and less risky. Why aren't social services targeting the partners of these women to get the snip?

Would it be ok for social services to identify men who had fathered large numbers of children and push them to be vasectomised?

As to it not being unusual to suggest that women in contact with social services be sterilized, if that's meant to be an attempt at defending the practice then yikes.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 27/11/2019 08:45

And a disproportionate number of them were First Nations. This has been pretty extensively discussed so if you think you're going to be able to brush it off then think again.

HulksPurplePanties · 27/11/2019 08:43

He's not the only killer who targeted First Nations women.

He didn't exclusively target First Nations women, he targeted prostitutes in the Hastings Street area of Vancouver.

And then there's the Pickton case. He's not the only killer who targeted First Nations women.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Pickton

(Note - The downtown East Side of Vancouver, where he found his victims, has for a long time been served by an organization called Vancouver Rape Relief. You know, the one that had a dead rat nailed to its door in the name of trans activism? And that was sued by Kimberly Nixon? So if you want a very direct tie in, there it is.)

MIdgebabe · 27/11/2019 08:41

Won't derail..

Qcng · 27/11/2019 08:40

Morgane Oger, is behind s lot of this blatant misogyny, and it quite open about despising women.

that Canadian society hasn't got a great record on women's right

Please tell me, as a Canadian woman, how that is the case?

HulksPurplePanties · 27/11/2019 08:34

The article doesn't give much background, but these women were probably involved with Child and Welfare services and had most likely had multiple children taken away and put into care. In cases like that, it's not unusual for social services to suggest that the women be sterilized. It's the bullying that is unusual.

QuentinWinters · 27/11/2019 08:33

Sterilising "undesirable" classes has a horrifying history and is linked to eugenics. It shouldn't be happening in this day and age. Setting up a truth and reconciliation committee is too little too late.
There are reliable, long acting but reversible contraceptives these women could have been offered instead.

QuentinWinters · 27/11/2019 08:29

My point by saying about trans issues was that Canada gives the impression of being very into intersectional feminism, while at the same time treating women of colour extremely badly, which is the opposite of intersectional feminism.
