The Guardian... Blind Date 23 November

I post this aware that I might get a warning.

However!

www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2019/nov/23/blind-date-jen-anna-glasses-fog-up

The woman, a lesbian, Anna (and the Guardian readership) did not reveal that Jen is a trans woman.

The whole thing is gaslighting.
And I may be deleted for that sentence.
There is a good thread on Twitter which I'll link.

Agree with all this, outrageous and yes I too await the Date where a male turns up to meet a TW without warning. I think a pig just flew over...but this may not be straightforward... Anna reports they 'had a snog outside the station'. And yes I wonder if she ticked 'pan' or somesuch as Notbad suggests. Jen's reaction shows Anna dodged a bullet there. Anyone behaving with such entitlement and disrespect is to be given a wide berth regardless of 'identity'...

pachyderm · 26/11/2019 08:18

Jesus! They have compromised this young woman's safety. We all know what these fucking deranged incels can be like. I really hope she takes this further.

Redshoeblueshoe · 26/11/2019 08:16

WTF

Datun · 26/11/2019 08:05

After she cancelled the second date, turns out the woman was 'really bad at replying to messages'. Wouldn't respond for eight hours apparently.

Honestly. There can't be this number of people on the planet who genuinely think others won't see this for what it is.

GCAcademic · 26/11/2019 08:01

Does it not cross their minds that everyone will be imagining the reverse scenario, transman and unwitting gay man, and will instantly see the misogyny in knowing they'd never, ever do it.

They should get Owen Jones to do it, seeing as he’s so inclusive and all that. Oh, except it turns out that he actually isn’t.

TanteRose · 26/11/2019 07:52

its so massively homophobic!

onalongsabbatical · 26/11/2019 07:51

Fuck me I support the Guardian with actual money every month from my bank - that's stopping today and I'll tell them why too. Bastards. Unbelievable.

HandsOffMyRights · 26/11/2019 07:49

If she has been purposely duped by The Guardian, disregarding her sexuality, sex and safety and is now facing a public backlash then this has been incredibly damaging.

She's been compromised morally and potentially put at risk. Would she have any grounds legally to sue the misogynistic and homophobic arse off The Guardian?

The more I think about this, the worse it gets.

Datun · 26/11/2019 07:48

Does it not cross their minds that everyone will be imagining the reverse scenario, transman and unwitting gay man, and will instantly see the misogyny in knowing they'd never, ever do it.

But now, of course, it wouldn't surprise me if they did. And the gay man was 'fine', nothing to see here.

Awful paper

TheNameGames · 26/11/2019 07:48

Yes it was, Bovary, and I flagged and reported it as abusive, others with accounts might want to do the same.

BovaryX · 26/11/2019 07:43

Cis lesbians are not human beings

Was that on Twitter? What is wrong with these people? The misogyny and homophobia is off the charts

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 26/11/2019 07:41

If I was a lesbian woman and had registered to participate in this blind dates columns, I would 100% expect that the newspaper would respect my sexual orientation and pair me with another lesbian female.

If this is not a misogynistic, homophobic powerplay, then I look forward to seeing an Alex Drummond-alike bandwidth-expanding "woman" paired up with an alpha male heterosexual man.

Come on Guardian, you know it's woke!

Helmetbymidnight · 26/11/2019 07:39

gosh, i read the column on sat- thought blimey shes keen- and the other one isnt...

thats not fair, is it.

BovaryX · 26/11/2019 07:39

I stopped reading The Guardian some time ago because I found many of its writers increasingly unpalatable but this? It really is a nadir even by their standards. It’s deceptive bullying behaviour. What the frick made them think this was okay?

OhHolyJesus · 26/11/2019 07:33

That screen shot

"Cis lesbians are not human beings".

Well don't try to date them then. Just leave them alone.

FFS.

TanteRose · 26/11/2019 07:32

I read that column most weeks.
that is truly shocking Shock

the deception, the response on social media, all of it - just wow

Kit19 · 26/11/2019 07:31

Ok just seen Jen did not disclose being trans, however the guardian did meet them so would have known

Kit19 · 26/11/2019 07:30

I’m Still Shock at this - someone at the guardian sat at their desk, read the profiles & made a deliberate decision to put a lesbian on a date with a bio Male. It’s such an appallingly shitty thing to do

MIdgebabe · 26/11/2019 07:28

Have they sent a transmale secretly on a blind date with a gay male?

theflushedzebra · 26/11/2019 07:24

This woman is being publicly shamed for not wanting a second date.

We don't know exactly why she didn't go for a second date - it could be because she is a lesbian and same-sex attracted, or it could be that she didn't click with Jen, and was being polite (women usually are polite when not wanting to date someone).

We DO know that Jen did not disclose to the Guardian that Jen is trans - because the Guardian have confirmed it.

The TRAs have decided that Anna is a bigot.

Don't anyone dare ever tell me that lesbians are not being shamed and abused for not wanting to date transwomen.

The Guardian... Blind Date 23 November
BarbaraStrozzi · 26/11/2019 07:24

That's shocking.

I too read the article, and at the time of reading assumed that the young woman must have ticked boxes in the Graun office saying "pan, happy to date transwomen."

But no, it turns out the shits gas lit her and socially coerced her.

It's straight up homophobia on the Graun's part.

ResistSexism · 26/11/2019 07:20

Ginger the Guardian recently published the demographics of participants in the blind date column. I think it was an anniversary edition.

There have been waaaay more gay male couples than lesbians since the column started.

stillathing · 26/11/2019 07:19

Well this is situation is hardly going to encourage more lesbians to apply is it? Back to your lesbian bars girls. Oh hang on, no, you're not allowed them either.

Gingerkittykat · 26/11/2019 07:12

I noticed that on page one of the blind date section they have four gay male couples and only two lesbian couples. So much for lesbian visibility, especially when one of the lesbians is a trans woman.

I counted up until page 7 and there were 52 male couples and 5 female couples.

stillathing · 26/11/2019 07:12

If this is as bad as it looks (ie she hadn't ticked a special "I'm attracted to multiple sexes/gender Ids" box), it's horrendous. No consideration given to power differentials there.

There's something very entitled about the way the rejected partner is huffing loudly about it over twitter. "it's her loss" etc. Why wouldn't you just quietly leave her alone?

How terrifying to be a 23 year old lesbian put in this position, privately in a one to one situation, then publicly on twitter.
