Would someone please tell me what 'smh' means? thank you.

FloralBunting · 26/11/2019 00:34

Well, the one gender advocate they had on said that 'the most important thing of all was that everyone felt validated .'

Given the thoroughly crispy toes the Tavi rep had from her feet being held to the fire by EM, I should think that none of them will feel validated by an interview with her, and I suspect the refusal to talk is going to play as bad as it always should have done - your tantrums effectiveness is at an end, AWAs. I am going to watch your house of cards fall with grim fascination, because while I rejoice in the end of your lies, those lies have still left so many lives devastated, and even your comeuppance won't change that.

But it'll do for starters.

BoreOfWhabylon · 26/11/2019 00:29

sorry, link doesn't work

OvaHere · 26/11/2019 00:29

Actually, this reminds me of when the wheels started falling off the Kids Company gravy train.

Yes!

OvaHere · 26/11/2019 00:28

Not watched the full thing yet but it sounds pretty good considering it's the BBC.

Seems like a two horse race to the tipping point now. Children or sport - which will get there first?

Air! Sunlight!

Thank you Emily.

Today (Radio 4) have been covering trans issues lately too. The wind has changed.

Actually, this reminds me of when the wheels started falling off the Kids Company gravy train.

WichBitchHarpyTerfThatsMe · 26/11/2019 00:26

I was gobsmacked to see this on the BBC. Very, very heartening.

The woman from the Tavi said GIDS for adults has been running for over 50 years and for children over 30 years. That is sufficient time for longitudinal studies on outcomes and interventions in clinic.

I'm putting Emily Maitliss on my santa list to come to mine for Christmas dinner. I'd love to have a good long chat with her.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 26/11/2019 00:14

None of the gender advocates are prepared to face an actual interview rather than a gushy regurgitation of their favorite press release.

Awaywiththepiskies · 26/11/2019 00:06

Charlie Edwards is brilliant! So clear, so compassionate.

And like PP, I'm ranting at the television: why oh why is the reporter using that stupid phrase "gender assigned at birth"? We are observed to be of one of two sexes.

theflushedzebra · 26/11/2019 00:02

Has the Beeb finally realised that putting children on a life-long medicalised pathway of untested drugs (drugs developed for cancer), below the age of consent (in some cases below Gillick competence I think) is not going to put them on the right side of history?

Maitliss tacking the GIDS woman on the duty of care in follow up studies, research, and evidence on the long term consequences was dynamite.

midcenturylegs · 26/11/2019 00:01

Is this on catch-up.. what times etc. Need a nice bedtime story!

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 25/11/2019 23:59

People with body dysmorphic disorder who want their leg cut off are also often very distressed. Is this person proposing that any time a patient is distressed the doctors just give them what they want? Because that seems unwise (especially when dealing with children).

Angryresister · 25/11/2019 23:52

Perhaps they do know more about those that are desperately unhappy and trying to detransition than they are letting on.

HopeClearwater · 25/11/2019 23:50

Wind's changed, everyone. Hold on to something

Yep. That’s what I was thinking. Wonder what the TRAs will be making of this.

LangCleg · 25/11/2019 23:47

But what changed the tavis view on giving puberty blockers to younger children.

I think by "feedback" she meant we got scrutinised by the HRA and it wasn't all positive.

littlbrowndog · 25/11/2019 23:41

But what changed the tavis view on giving puberty blockers to younger children.

That was slipped in ay end

I thought that was important.

Were they admitting what they done in the past was wrong and if it was what is the proof it was wrong or right

donquixotedelamancha · 25/11/2019 23:36

Also, presentably the vast majority of previous research on trans issues cannot be confidently applied to the current transitioning cohort as the types of people wanting to transition has changed so substantially over the past 5 years.

Very true, but more than that:

How good is the evidence for transition in general?

Certainly there is evidence of benefits to transition for some GD sufferers, but is there good quantitative data on it's effectiveness versus other treatments?

Do we understand failure rates, effect on co-morbid MH conditions and how effectiveness varies?

Transition is a much more drastic intervention than talking therapy, it needs to be well understood.

Angryresister · 25/11/2019 23:34

gonetoofar you are right that these important facts were not mentioned and should have been. I am sure Caspian made sure his views were heard

DeeZastris · 25/11/2019 23:32

Seems like the BBC has finally remembered that women pay the tv license too.

theflushedzebra · 25/11/2019 23:30

Wow. Maitliss was magnificent.

Puuuulllll

By god, it's moving!

merrymouse · 25/11/2019 23:29

Emily Maitlis was very good, but the report started with complete acceptance that people are assigned a gender at birth.

Angryresister · 25/11/2019 23:29

First interviewer on film definitely woke and very annoying in the skipping to and fro. Charlie was brilliant , unlike the grinning person from Mermaids. But Emily did a fantastic job...she had really researched and knew what she was talking about. I never though a gender critical voice would be heard on The BBC. An extraordinary drilling down to the issues that concern us. Psychiatrist had no idea why there are so many more girls than boys...she could have taken a guess, but ended up saying that she didn’t know why it was more men in the past...she could have taken a punt on that one too...but EMily pressed on with the drilling down. Thank you..the ground is shifting.

Melroses · 25/11/2019 23:28

Was it the same woman that was on the CBBC trans programme?

To answer my own question Blush

No, that was Dr Polly Carmichael who took a cameo role in "I am Leo"
