Compulsory to teach “gender identity” from September?

“From September next year, all secondary schools will be required to teach about sexual orientation and gender identity“

From the Independent Education Today website. Is this true, or is it Stonewall hyperbole? I do not want my children being taught about so-called “gender identity” as though it is scientific fact. (Very happy indeed for them to learn about homosexuality and bisexuality).

Yes, it's true. What's more, because it will be part of 'relationship' education rather than sex education you will not have the right to withdraw your child.

There's a FAQ here:

www.gov.uk/government/news/relationships-education-relationships-and-sex-education-rse-and-health-education-faqs

Q: Will my child be taught about LGBT relationships?

A: Pupils should be taught about the society in which they are growing up. These subjects are designed to foster respect for others and for difference, and educate pupils about healthy relationships.

Pupils should receive teaching on LGBT content during their school years. Teaching children about the society that we live in and the different types of loving, healthy relationships that exist can be done in a way that respects everyone. Primary schools are strongly encouraged and enabled to cover LGBT content when teaching about different types of families.

Secondary schools should cover LGBT content in their RSE teaching. RSE should meet the needs of all pupils, whatever their developing sexuality or identity – this should include age-appropriate teaching about different types of relationships in the context of the law.

Statutory guidance:

www.gov.uk/government/publications/relationships-education-relationships-and-sex-education-rse-and-health-education

These are the relevant bits:

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT)

36. In teaching Relationships Education and RSE, schools should ensure that the needs of all pupils are appropriately met, and that all pupils understand the importance of equality and respect. Schools must ensure that they comply with the relevant provisions of the Equality Act 2010, (please see The Equality Act 2010 and schools: Departmental advice), under which sexual orientation and gender reassignment are amongst the protected characteristics.

37. Schools should ensure that all of their teaching is sensitive and age appropriate in approach and content. At the point at which schools consider it appropriate to teach their pupils about LGBT, they should ensure that this content is fully integrated into their programmes of study for this area of the curriculum rather than delivered as a stand-alone unit or lesson. Schools are free to determine how they do this, and we expect all pupils to have been taught LGBT content at a timely point as part of this area of the curriculum.

and in the section for secondary schools:

75. Pupils should be taught the facts and the law about sex, sexuality, sexual health and gender identity in an age-appropriate and inclusive way. All pupils should feel that the content is relevant to them and their developing sexuality. Sexual orientation and gender identity should be explored at a timely point and in a clear, sensitive and respectful manner. When teaching about these topics, it must be recognised that young people may be discovering or understanding their sexual orientation or gender identity. There should be an equal opportunity to explore the features of stable and healthy same-sex relationships. This should be integrated appropriately into the RSE programme, rather than addressed separately or in only one lesson.

Schools have a lot of freedom in how they go about meeting these requirements and they are required to consult with parents when designing their curriculum.

It's important to keep tabs on what resources they are using and what external organisations they're bringing in. Some of them are absolutely shocking - really basic things like not including sex in the list of protected characteristics.

I thank the powers above that I have retired from teaching so I do not have to teach this.

The children who are being told that they can have babies, father kids, etc - and go down this path in this belief, the immaturity (which has been noted as a side effect of the drugs) - how will they feel when they understand that this is not something that 'science is about to make happen'?

SarahTancredi · 12/11/2019 14:06

siam

Jazz has already postponed college to focus on self care.

I dont think the whole thing has been a happy end to the journey it was assumed it would be.

Theres also the fact that they appear to be somewhat immature for their age ( no doubt a result of the blockers)

But I expect if there is some kind.of break.down in the future it will be the fault of feminists and.bigotry and not the drs and.parents who.lied indulged and put her through all this. And i do hope she ends up happy and settled.

I.hope we end up with the right to withdraw.our kids from.these.lessons. as I.certainly do not want my.kids sat through this.

Also - slightly OT but does anyone else have a feeling that something terrible will happen to Jazz Jennings who really was the guinea pig for the whole trans kid thing? How can they push this with what’s happening to Jazz? JJ is clearly suffering physical and mental pain as the result of everything that’s happened and I can’t see it ending well

Siameasy · 12/11/2019 13:50

My DD (5) is already gender critical
If daddy wears a dress is he a lady
No
Can men have babies
No
Can a man become a woman
No
This is what we are going to have to do. I just feel sorry for the people who are sleeping through this.

God help them at DS school - he isn't fooled.

Teaching sexual orientation, cool (he has gay relatives so its no biggie, not quite sure why they are 'teaching this to secondary school-age kids - they already know!) but gender stereotypes 'as real' - nah.

littlecabbage · 12/11/2019 13:27

Thanks @OldCrone, I will fill that in.

I have just checked the Department for Education website, and cannot find any information that “gender identity” education is to become compulsory. I have emailed them to ask if this claim is true. I will report back.

In Wales they are currently consulting on whether you will be allowed to remove your children from gender identity ideology lessons. Anyone can respond, you don't have to be in Wales, although obviously only Welsh schools will be affected. But what happens in one part of the UK is likely to affect the rest eventually.

The consultation runs until 28th November.

gov.wales/ensuring-access-full-curriculum

As with all of these consultations, you don't have to answer every question. Questions 1-3 and Q7 look like the ones where you can make comments about gender identity ideology (Q4 is about RE and Q5 & 6 are about the Welsh language). Q1-3 are about the new curriculum (which they consulted about earlier this year and was full of 'gender identity' stuff), and Q7 is a free comment question about any other concerns.

This stuff has to be taught very carefully

I don't see why trans ideology has to be taught at all, it is harmful to children. I think LGB education should be taught in secondary school alongside regular sex education but I am very confused why they've started teaching all of this to primary school children.

Imnobody4 · 12/11/2019 12:53

Conflating gender and sexual orientation again. The trans agenda slipping in under cover.

Starlight456 · 12/11/2019 12:51

My Ds came home from school year 7 thinking he was A sexual simply because they talked about having no sexual feelings , as far as I am concerned this is due to the fact he was 11 years old . I had to help him understand he was too young to onow

This stuff has to be taught very carefully

CeridwenTheWitch · 12/11/2019 12:38

I think more and more people need to home school their children because of this. It's going to create a generation of very confused, depressed children who later have unnecessary surgery.

Siameasy · 12/11/2019 12:26

Well I’m gonna make sure my DC know what a croci gender is by the time they get to secondary - thanks for the heads ip
