Lib Dems actively deterring GC women

Today I emailed the Lib Dems expressing an interest in joining their party.

I stated no one should receive discrimination or abuse for their transgender status but explained that I am GC and I asked if there was room for GC women in the party.

I received the following response:
Thank you for getting in touch. Whilst we appreciate your interest in joining, you should be aware that the Liberal Democrats are a trans inclusive party, and we have made it clear that we fully behind trans communities. As liberals we champion everyone’s right to live the life they want. By the sounds of your email it appears that your values are not aligned with ours so we are probably not the right the party for you.

I am flabbergasted. I didn't expect that I would have to believe that humans can change biological sex in order to be a member of the Lib Dems.

I am so disappointed. I was going to vote for them in the GE (passionate Remainer) but I cannot if this is their response.

There is no one to vote for. I am lost.

well unless there's an alternative in my area to Conservatives, Labour, Greens or LibDems I shall definitely be spoiling my ballot.
I wouldn't dream of not turning up to vote.

Goosefoot · 08/11/2019 15:35

We are 50% of the electorate. Maybe there's a need for us to form a "neutral" party, one where the candidates will withhold the female vote, or vote with the party that best supports "women's rights" depending on what is being debated.

Somehow parties like this seem to always end up making more policy statements.

My country just had an election. The Greens have been talking about the environment as an existential crises a they ought, and clearly they also would need to talk about related economic questions. The environment is a major concern here across many political lines.

However this election they also decided to take all the most contentions and clearly partisan political issues they could find and push them as campaign issues, including gender ideology, abortion, sex as work, etc, and push them as platform policy.

babynewt · 08/11/2019 15:14

Ah ok, women's equality party. First search bought up security protocol!!

babynewt · 08/11/2019 15:04

Herocomplex WEP (women's electoral party?) never heard of them....
do you have any info?

Herocomplex · 08/11/2019 14:47

Where are WEP in all of this? Did they become handmaidens as well?

babynewt · 08/11/2019 14:43

We are 50% of the electorate. Maybe there's a need for us to form a "neutral" party, one where the candidates will withhold the female vote, or vote with the party that best supports "women's rights" depending on what is being debated. Allowing proper scrutiny of laws and regulations that do not compromise women's rights, allowing proper debate.
for those who do not feel that any party represents womens rights adequately, time to make them aware that they will be potentially losing a significant amount of votes.
Also mass boycotting of organisations that do not promote appropriate service provision. I believe that it is identified that women make a significant amount of financial decisions.
Apologies, thinking off the top of my head, but don't want to not vote, in memory of my g.grandmother a suffragette!
Time to fight back??

midcenturylegs · 08/11/2019 14:40

No read all of this yet - just wanted to say that spoiling a vote has to be done a certain way otherwise it's doesn't get counted in any way

Contact the local party and tell them how disappointing their canvasser was?

ShesDressedInBlackAgain · 08/11/2019 14:06

I just got canvassed and I said 'I won't be supporting you because the lib dems have been very clear that they don't want the votes of GC feminists' and she said, 'OK' and left.

Mner2019 · 08/11/2019 13:58

I am going to write to my Lib Candidate and ask for their views. Our previous MP was a closet GC but has stepped down. It will be between tories and lib dems here. I doubt Labour will get much.

Fingers crossed I don't get burned at the stake...

GaraMedouar · 08/11/2019 13:36

I was all set to vote LibDem for remain reasons. But i will not vote for them now. I don't think they would have won in my area, we're marginal between tories and Labour.

jadefinch · 08/11/2019 12:59

I've voted for a centre left or more left wing party my entire life.

I'll be spoiling my ballot paper this election.

I did briefly consider voting Lib Dem but that message from them has convinced me not to

CaptainKirksSpikeyGhost · 08/11/2019 12:54

I would never not exercise my right to vote but there is no-one I can vote for.

The right to vote also includes the right to deface your Ballot.

DodoPatrol · 08/11/2019 12:53

What if the parties decide that they will ALL effectively disenfranchise women by pushing away anyone who knows what a woman is -- from office, from political activism and by deterring them from voting?

It's so easily done, it seems - 'Don't believe males can be women? No room for you in this party, sorry.'

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 08/11/2019 12:52

Another following with interest.

I've reluctantly decided that I'm going to have to spoil my ballot paper. I would never not exercise my right to vote but there is no-one I can vote for.

I feel so sad for DD though, her first opportunity to vote and this is the shitshow she's faced with.

Blackopal · 08/11/2019 12:51

Cwg1 thankbyou for the reply.
Makes sense I suppose, although annoying when lying in wait with Questions with a capital Q!

cwg1 · 08/11/2019 12:43

Blackopal Yes - I think all parties will concentrate on the marginal seats and encourage members from both rock solid and no-hoper constituencies to help with the former during elections.

To be blunt, it is about numbers on the day and ensuring as many of your supporters as possible vote.

DuMondeB · 08/11/2019 12:39

It was dead quiet when I went in to spoil and you could clearly hear my little pencil going scratch-scritch-scritch for far longer than it takes to make a cross. Consider taking a biro or a felt tip - quieter and easier to read!

Sunkisses · 08/11/2019 12:37

@DontBuyANewMumCashmere - I've just sent you a DM. Could you take a quick look?

Blackopal · 08/11/2019 12:19

Following with interest.

I have lived in my home for over four years and have never once had a anyone knock on my door from a political party.
Is it something that happens in areas with less safe seats?

Justhadathought · 08/11/2019 12:18

I am going to turn up, to show i was bothered. And spoil my ballot paper. I don't see what other rational response there is

Definitely!

For me the tide has turned, in quite dramatic ways, in recent years, and the times of being prepared to vote for 'the least worst candidate' have now passed for me. Old party political loyalties and fixed ideological positions are shifting very quickly.

If I had a local candidate who I respected and held in high regard, and whose position on the most important issues was in alignment with my own, then I'd vote for them. Usually these days it tends to be the iconoclasts, lone wolves and independent types that have always stood up for what they believe in, that appeal - but there are not too many about.

CaptainKirksSpikeyGhost · 08/11/2019 12:17

Make sure you're doodling is better than mine or it'll end up looking more like and wine glass or a hammer.

cwg1 · 08/11/2019 12:16

tellme As above, it's completely up to you - as it should be - whether or not you want to tell canvassers of your voting intentions.

I say that as someone who's canvassed in the past and - I hope - was never pushy Smile

I'd suggest just saying you've not made up your mind but are very concerned about women's issues/rights - girls being disadvantaged in sports, for example, or the importance of women HCPs for women survivors and so on, and ask what their policies are.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 08/11/2019 12:14

Captains inner 8 year old is tempted by "Women don't have penises" (sp?! Never had to write the plural). Complete with pictures, a la the doodles on bank notes from a while back.

EmpressLesbianInChair · 08/11/2019 12:14

I’m glad you’ve contacted the main membership address. I’d like to know if it official policy to prevent gender critical women from joining. Please let us know what response you get.

Well, Lynne Featherstone's pretty clear on not wanting our votes. www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2019/02/05/feminists-not-welcome-lib-dems-unless-support-gender-neutral/
