What does 'double down' mean? I just can't work it out. It seems to either mean redouble efforts to do something, or to make a lot of effort to pretend that you didn't do what you actually did and were witnessed doing?

Datun · 01/11/2019 19:34

I love how he’s doubled down on it.

Which is what a lot of women have been saying. It's not illegal to criticise trans ideology, misgender, deadname. It's not illegal to take the piss.

Double down is just maintaining a viewpoint. The bullying can't dent Gervais.

JoyceJeffries · 01/11/2019 19:14

I love how he’s doubled down on it.

If Joan Rivers were still alive, I'd love to hear her thoughts on our current climate. She usually didn't hold back or care if she offended.

greenapplesred12 · 01/11/2019 18:08

Ricky is very cleverly using comedy to a)highlight how ridiculous the pronoun obsessives are and b)to raise a laugh. There's a serious side to it though for him, I think. He doesn't buy into it and thinks it's silly.

MissLawls · 01/11/2019 17:57

He has over 13 million followers. This is astounding. He's untouchable too. Because he's male. And this whole thing is about male privilege isn't it. They're scared of him but they'll come after us.

Melroses · 01/11/2019 17:47

The one featuring his observations re Caitlyn Jenner is my favourite

Do you have a link?

HandsOffMyRights · 01/11/2019 17:16

Ricky gets it.

Ricky was a bit of a New Romantic and a Bowie fan so part of the era of 1970s/80s 'gender bending' that Marilyn, Annie Lennox, Prince and co. did so effectively.

CranberriesChoccy · 01/11/2019 17:08

. Plus, a huge part of his brand is being offensive, so he isn't going to start apologising for it now.

Exactly. His reputation would suffer more damage for saying sorry than offending a few flakes.

HandsOffMyRights · 01/11/2019 16:55

May need to watch it again.

Oncewasblueandyellowtwo · 01/11/2019 16:52

I. Am. Loving this.
Me too Bemore, and I'm gonna watch one of his show tonight on Netflix for the first time.

BeMoreMagdalen · 01/11/2019 15:57

I. Am. Loving this.

Glinner is a decent sort, has been relatively successful, but he's not a frontman. Gervais has built a career on not giving a fuck, is, despite not being my cuppa, clever writer and performer and has a huge fanbase that love him for it.

Do the anime creeps really think they can bludgeon him into tearful submission? I think they might have met their match here. He's magnificently misanthropic, so he's not falling for the tedious wokescoldery or respect-my-inner-identity shite.

Ereshkigal · 01/11/2019 15:50

The unbelievably irritating anime avatar TRAs and assorted woke people piling on are being trolled by him quite effectively but they're not clever enough to get it.

YourOpinionIsNoted · 01/11/2019 15:41

Thing is, they can pile on all they like, he will just laugh at them. He is very, very rich and successful. He is very, very good at what he does. He - crucially - makes other people very, very rich. Netflix paid him something like $40million for his stand up show, which means they will have made a fortune off it. They aren't going to turn him loose because he took the piss out of JY on twitter. Plus, a huge part of his brand is being offensive, so he isn't going to start apologising for it now.

HandsOffMyRights · 01/11/2019 15:41

Great line, Ricky.

ErrolTheDragon · 01/11/2019 15:34

He he. Grin

A small but perfectly formed line.

Melroses · 01/11/2019 15:34
Grin
Ereshkigal · 01/11/2019 15:00

He has changed his bio to "I identify as a comedian so my pronouns are he he.".

Let's just think about this and marvel. Gervais made a joke at the expense of a racist sexual predator who harasses immigrant women to wax his genitals and tries to hold pool parties for adolescent girls without their parents present.

And somehow people imagine the progressive thing to do is to stand up for the sexual predator?

Well exactly. And while we're at it, let's not forget he wanted to help 10-year-olds with their tampons.

Picking a side is very revealing.

BeMoreMagdalen · 01/11/2019 14:45

'My pronouns are he he'

Ok, Gervais, that is definitely the first unforced, not motivated by cringing embarrassment laugh I've had from you. And I am loving it so much I might share it.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 01/11/2019 14:40

Ricky Gervais is a legend Smile

IsadoraQuagmire · 01/11/2019 14:35

She's still banging on about him this morning! Lots of huffing and puffing for somebody who doesn't care

That woman is a monumental bore...

Oncewasblueandyellowtwo · 01/11/2019 14:35

He has changed his bio to "I identify as a comedian so my pronouns are he he.".
He's not letting this go and he's not bowing down to the mob.

RoyalCorgi · 01/11/2019 14:28

He made a Yaniv halloween joke on twitter.
