Ominous. A resounding loss. It's madness.
Hope dad can take it further.

Islam and Christianity are very different faiths Mango and I’m not even sure the position in Iran can be extrapolated to Islam as a whole as there are different Islamic factions.

charlestonchaplin · 22/10/2019 12:30

It is certainly true that on Mumsnet FWR the Christian Church is blamed for anything and everything bad, especially where women are concerned. Mud is thrown freely whether deserved or not, and whether the evidence suggests it should be or not. That kind of attitude leads to people automatically taking the opposite position to what they perceive as ‘right-wing Christianity’. So the people you think should stand with you are blinded by the fact that you hold a similar position on trans issues as apparently evil Christians and will not engage with your arguments.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 22/10/2019 12:26

Starfire? Luna? Never Mary or Doris. These sound like superhero characters - and which kid didn’t want to be a superhero?

MangoFeverDream · 22/10/2019 12:22

evangelical Christians you would know that they believe God doesn’t make mistakes and wouldn’t mistakenly produce a girl in a boy’s body

Who knows? Iran has the most transgender people because it’s illegal to be gay. Might be some parallel thought in Christianity too. Plus, some parts of Texas are getting overrun with super lefty types moving from California, who are causing (from what I hear) the same sort of problems they left behind. Texas is changing, in good and bad ways.

Maybe I'm missing something, but what I see happening here with organised religious groups is something akin to the following:

  1. Church persecutes lesbians and gay men, and does its best to enforce gender conforming behaviour, for millennia. Women excluded from leadership roles, strongly encouraged to be either celibate or mothers. Women forced into shotgun marriages, counselled to remain in violent marriages, locked up for promiscuity or being unmarried mothers etc etc.
  1. Extremely recently, social attitudes change. Churches belatedly catch up, to an extent. Individual clergy start trying to be more understanding and compassionate and accepting of behaviour that a generation ago would have led to shunning.
  1. Stonewall et al achieve their campaigning goals of equal rights in law for lesbians, gay men and bisexual people. There's still work to do on changing attitudes but every reason to think that homophobia is on the decrease. Time to disband or downscale? No, because their senior managers have mortgages to pay. So they add the T to LGB and then go mad adding on the rest of the alphabet too, and coin it in with diversity training for all which puts huge stress on the T, a lot less on the LGB.
  1. People who want to be dissociated from the old persecution of LGB people unthinkingly swing behind the trans rights movement because they think it's all part of the same thing. Being labelled as a bigot is to be avoided at all costs.

And here we are, labelling a 5yo boy who likes dressing up as Elsa as 'born in the wrong body' and putting him on track for puberty blockers in a few years' time.

Oncewasblueandyellowtwo · 22/10/2019 12:05

Interestingly, Dunlop revealed that Georgulas told him that “Luna” was not the first female name that James picked out. The first was “Starfire,” a female character from the superhero cartoon Teen Titans Go! Georgulas, however, encouraged him to pick a different name.
Don't most kids want to pick out a name from a kids show and be that character?

Soubriquet · 22/10/2019 12:05

I’m shocked that they will allow this child a “chemical castration”

He’s 7!!!

Needmoresleep · 22/10/2019 11:39

Poor poor child.

The hospital chaplain [...] is a Quaker. The hospital states that it offers religious support for all denominations.

I said mainstream Christian. Quakers have very varied theological beliefs depending on the individual and the local group they belong to. Calling them mainstream Christian would be problematic. Some groups are, some aren't.

And I bet the clinic offers religious support to its paying customers. It would be more interesting to know how many of those providing the chaplaincy support have the backing of their respective religious authorities.

I didn't read the whole article by the Quaker chaplain, but the abstract makes it clear that it is a polemic against the faith communities who oppose what the clinic offers (gender transitioning for children).

To be fair, Lang, the app doesn't show what links are. I didn't realise that until I started using it recently.

Ah, apols. Gawd, this site creaks!

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 22/10/2019 10:34

@ charlestonchaplin - I’ve seen the argument that this isn’t an oopsy on the part of the almighty - but just a challenge for us mere mortals to make us better people (obviously on a slow day in eternity).

Besides - when have humans not bent religious teachings to suit their own wants and needs?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 22/10/2019 10:32

To be fair, Lang, the app doesn't show what links are. I didn't realise that until I started using it recently.

LangCleg · 22/10/2019 09:57

The Texan link has now been posted three times. Can we actually read threads before repeating links!

LangCleg · 22/10/2019 09:56

This would definitely not be a mainstream Christian view. Although I'm sure in Texas there are enough fringe churches to find one who could endorse it. The normal Christian doctrine is that people are not 'born into the wrong body' and someone with gender dysphoria should be treated like people with other psychological conditions. Absolutely not ever 'better trans than gay'.

The hospital chaplain (from the clinic treating this child) who wrote the glowing article about transgender and faith that I linked above is a Quaker. The hospital states that it offers religious support for all denominations.

So a boy would still be a boy regardless of presentation and changing appearance and claiming to be female won’t deal with any issues with homosexuality.

Fink · 22/10/2019 09:39

Texas. You’d think if the Christian argument might hold weight there

Outweighed by homophobia, I suspect. Better female than gay. And this could also be a Christian argument: it's a way of preventing future "sin", similar to Iran, and if it's endorsed by the medical profession, so much the better.

This would definitely not be a mainstream Christian view. Although I'm sure in Texas there are enough fringe churches to find one who could endorse it. charlestonchaplin · 22/10/2019 09:37

Fekko and kesstrel You are wrong. If you know anything about evangelical Christians you would know that they believe God doesn’t make mistakes and wouldn’t mistakenly produce a girl in a boy’s body.

kesstrel · 22/10/2019 09:23

For those who don't like the news source, here is a detailed report of the hearing from The Texan:

LangCleg · 22/10/2019 09:06

I'm sitting wondering about whether jury trials in cases concerning child welfare are a good idea.

Anyway. Here is the clinic the child is a patient at:

www.childrens.com/specialties-services/specialty-centers-and-programs/endocrinology/programs-and-services/genecis-program

PPs have noted religion as a possible factor in Texas. So here's a paper written by a chaplain associated with the clinic:

digitalcommons.library.tmc.edu/jfs/vol17/iss2/4/

And here is a glowing Cosmo article about the senior clinician:

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 22/10/2019 09:01

Did I read this was in the middle of a divorce? So a parent could never (consciously or unconsciously) harm a child to punish the other parent during an acrimonious divorce, no? Never happens?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 22/10/2019 09:00

Indeedy. Her understanding of medicine, biology and children is definitely lacking. Where did she get her medical degree from? I think they should be asking for it back.

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 22/10/2019 08:59

She doesn't 'know' and there is nothing wrong with this healthy little boy.

This is about the mother, not the child.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 22/10/2019 08:51

Let kids be kids. Let adults make decisions for themselves when they are adults (and I mean in their 20s, not teens).

Why not. Why play God with a child’s life. She will look at this child for the rest of their life so I hope she can sleep well knowing that she took them down this path.

How can she know that medicalisation is a ‘cure’ for whatever she perceives is ‘wrong’ with this child?
