Compare and contrast:

The literary and journalism community in the UK is transphobic apparently. Yet TRAs are gloating over the death of a journalist.

She is very invested in this ideology.

That's a really unpleasant way to behave. I hope she has paid you back every penny.

And if indeed she doesn't want our business surely our just not shopping there in the first place is easier than her having to process a lot of returns and refunds. So we're giving her what she requested and saving her some bookkeeping work.

Karabair · 21/10/2019 14:20

Get another job then, instead of trying to change the meaning of feminism,. Which is also a thankless. marginal existence. But we don't get credit for what we do generally, we get called terfs.

Also second shelf books is neither unthanked or marginalised, she has had some excellent media coverage and she raised tens of thousands on a crowdfunder. She has a shop in the middle of Soho, hardly marginal. Your pity, if you are not second shelf books yourself, is misplaced.

Birdsfoottrefoil · 21/10/2019 14:20

Arnold more than that - if she her crowdfunded stated that she was raising money for a feminist bookshop then it could have been fraudulent.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 21/10/2019 14:18

'Or perhaps being a niche, independent book-seller is a bloody thankless, marginal existence.'

I am sure it is. And perhaps slagging off your potential customers online and saying you don't want their money is a really bad business strategy but that doesn't mean you have the right to do it and then nobody talk about it.
I used to love the Silver Moon and make special journeys to go there. I am grateful for this thread because I would rather be warned in advance so I don't waste my time doing the same with this place.

Birdsfoottrefoil · 21/10/2019 14:18

There are a lot of people with misogynistic views who hold down difficult jobs, or run small businesses. I don’t need to feel sorry for them.

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 21/10/2019 14:14

I was a customer and one of many women I know who contributed to her crowdfunder.

I don't know anything about this shop but are you saying women contributed to this woman's business and are now having their generosity and good faith thrown back in their faces via misogynistic language?

That's a really unpleasant way to behave. I hope she has paid you back every penny.

eBooksAreBooks · 21/10/2019 14:14

There isn't a feminist/women's bookshop in the UK any more as far as I know. Silver Moon and Libertas have both closed down.

Perhaps there's a gap in the market then? Or perhaps being a niche, independent book-seller is a bloody thankless, marginal existence.

MrsSnippyPants · 21/10/2019 14:12

Feminist. For women. The clue is in the fucking name.
And they don't 'explain their stance'. They just block.

That's hilarious. Are you a monolith?

Karabair · 21/10/2019 14:10

I do buy women's books, feminist books: many, many over the years.

I generally get my books, second hand, from Abe Books online. You can find some amazing second wave feminist books there.

eBooksAreBooks · 21/10/2019 14:09

You'll find that book people, genuine book people, will always sound very similar when defending independent booksellers.

Karabair · 21/10/2019 14:07

But they do have you ebooks.

You sound a lot like the second shelf bookshop's twitter feed.

eBooksAreBooks · 21/10/2019 14:04

Is there a feminist bookshop that you would agree "centres women"?

Go shop there.

If you don't want to give this bookshop free publicity, find a book-seller you do agree with and make a thread about how wonderful they are. It is always wonderful to hear about a genuinely niche and stimulating bookshop.

Individual booksellers with families who have already explained their stance more than once, and who will never be able to satisfy you, have customers who do need their attention. bills that need paying, lives to lead and books to sell.

They don't have a publicity department, a customer service guru ora spin-doctor.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 21/10/2019 14:04

If she's outright said that she doesn't want women who disagree with her as customers then surely anyone letting potential customers whose money she doesn't want know that is doing both parties a favor.

MrsSnippyPants · 21/10/2019 13:56

I was a customer and one of many women I know who contributed to her crowdfunder. When she first tweeted her TWAW mantra, a number of us politely questioned her and tried to open a reasonable discussion.

We were immediately dismissed as T*FS and told we were not welcome as customers. If I choose to publicise the fact that for someone who purports to run a 'feminist' bookshop she seems to be quite anti-womens' rights, then that is my business. She keeps calling UK women transphobic, We are just responding to HER.

So no, I DON'T like it, I WON'T shop there and I CHOOSE to tell other women why.

Clear?

Karabair · 21/10/2019 13:48

Yes, feminism has a meaning, it's for women, the female-bodied.

Using the term as a sales tool and branding exercise for your business, whatever size it is, whilst attacking women and attempting to change feminism to male inclusive is not on.

Birdsfoottrefoil · 21/10/2019 13:46

I don’t see why a campaign is more justified if it is against a large corporation. But nonetheless I won’t shop anywhere which adopts an anti-woman stance and I won’t shop at a book shop that seeks to corrupt language by trying to alter the established meaning of words such as women, girls, violence, oppression, vulnerable etc. Or one that seeks to silence people with cries of ‘transphobia’ to anyone who dares to voice heretical views about their religion.

JustTurtlesAllTheWayDown · 21/10/2019 13:38

Why do you think that continually harassing an individual with different views to you makes you look as if you're more emotionally mature than a two year old?

Disagreement is not harassment.
Criticism is not harassment.
If the owner of a 'feminist' bookshop uses and defends deeply misogynistic expressions like terf a word almost solely aimed at women and frequently alongside sexually violent threats then she really shouldn't be surprised when she gets criticism for it.

ShesDressedInBlackAgain · 21/10/2019 13:31

Womaning wrong again

eBooksAreBooks · 21/10/2019 13:23

Don't like it? Don't shop there.

I can see how a campaign against a large corporation is a valid stance, but you must be aware that other women have different views of feminism. Hers doesn't exclude trans women, yours does.

Campaign against legal changes :fine. But you can't be genuinely surprised that an individual would rather put their energy into running their own business than rebutting your tiresome, repetitive, weary-making "argument".

Is there a feminist bookshop that you would agree "centres women"?

MrsSnippyPants · 21/10/2019 12:59

Aaaaaand, I'm blocked by her. There's a surprise. Never able to justify their stance, just stick their fingers in their ears. Two year olds have more emotional maturity.

@Beamur I have a controversial theory that some members of the trans community didn't relate to the strong gender stereotypes you get everywhere and it's caused long term trauma due to feeling so dis-placed. When they come out with something like that, it supports my theory.

Beamur · 21/10/2019 11:52

The mentality of celebrating someone's death because they disagreed with you is really hard to understand. How very unkind to the family and friends who are grieving.

ThreeLittleDinos · 21/10/2019 11:52

Thank you! I've always liked that song. "Science is real, from anatomy to geology, science is real, from astrophysics to biology" is my favourite part at the moment. Very relevant given the Always scandal against women. If this carries on, I'm sure the song will be shortly banned and textbooks changed.
