Am shocked, I knew she was ill but never expected this so soon.

Her tweets about her ex being an arse when she was at her lowest were heartbreaking and her joy at seeing reviews of her book was infectious.

RIP

RIP brave lady. I was shocked and saddened to see this

pachyderm · 25/10/2019 21:51

Yes, the irony being that Deborah Orr was very sympathetic to the TRAs until recently. She was trying to be fair but others warned her that nothing but total capitulation would satisfy them and there was no point trying to reason or engage. When eventually she did put a foot wrong they went after her with a vengeance, right up to cheering at her cruel untimely death. They are beneath contempt.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 25/10/2019 18:58

The revolting commentary on Toxic Twitter following this poor woman's death would have single-handedly 'peak transed' me if I hadn't already peaked some time ago. How can people in all conscience post the revolting stuff they have when someone else - someone's family member, mother, and loved one - has just died?

Speaks loud and clear as to who and what these people are. And in the same breath they're hollering for respect and inclusion.

Works two ways.

Karabair · 25/10/2019 18:04

Ted Hughes destroyed Sylvia Plath's journals. Something similar going on here perhaps.

AnnaNimmity · 25/10/2019 15:31

I was really sad to hear about her death, and see her twitter account disappear this week. I've read her for years and really admired her.

Her ex sounds horrendous. I can understand though why her sons may not want that stuff public.

womanonclaphamomnibus · 25/10/2019 15:25

The sons were reconciled

TemporaryPermanent · 24/10/2019 19:06

Also I think it's very possible that WS has an anonymous twitter account on which he follows people. Given how many people get into trouble over who they follow, what they retweet etc, I really dont see why any public figure is on it in their own persona.

TemporaryPermanent · 24/10/2019 19:04

Tbh I can understand why her children would want tweets publicly discussing shitty conflicts between their parents taken out of circulation. I loved her writing and I didn't know her at all (I should be so lucky) but I found those discussions happening on twitter pretty uncomfortable.

ChattyLion · 24/10/2019 18:52

I used to love Julie Burchill’s column too. Then the weekend mag went shit and I stopped buying the Saturday Guardian. Didn’t realise that was Deborah Orr. Flowers I used to read her column in the Indy and really liked it.

ChattyLion · 24/10/2019 18:41

I am so sorry to read that. What an appalling experience that must have been for her.

Karabair · 24/10/2019 18:35

I hadn't realised she was the editor of Guardian Weekend in the mid 90s. I used to buy it every week, because it was a terrific magazine. Mainly because Julie Burchill, who Orr commissioned, wrote a column winding up the liberals.

She also used to hold an annual "no men allowed" part for her women friends in her house at Christmas. I hope she sent Will to the cinema with fifty pence for a bag of crisps and instructions not to come home until really, really late.

GrinitchSpinach · 24/10/2019 18:26

I imagine they took "in sickness and in health" vows. What a repulsive, disloyal, dishonorable, oathbreaking man.

I didn't comment on this thread before because I'm not very familiar with her work. Now I will be sure to go back to read Deborah's published oeuvre.

Karabair · 24/10/2019 18:13

"make me sorry for taking him on"

I hate that man. What an appalling story. Poor Deborah.

Haworthia · 24/10/2019 17:21

Sickening isn’t it? The denying she had a fever, “losing” the thermometer, pretending not to understand the reading...

Just imagine being that sick and that helpless.

BIWitch · 24/10/2019 16:56

Sad Angry

ARoombaOfOnesOwn · 24/10/2019 16:46

Oh Haworthia Sad Angry

I had read bits of Deborah’s Twitter, but not that. JFC.

Pota2 · 24/10/2019 16:44

My god he’s a vile piece of shit isn’t he? Absolutely stone cold and heartless. I wish she’d left his sorry ass 10 years ago and enjoyed some proper years of her life without that waste of space.

The more I think about it, the more disgraceful it is that Twitter agreed to delete Deborah’s Twitter. She only died on Saturday FFS. Whoever made the request wasted absolutely no time.

One final abusive act from an abusive ex?

I took some screenshots of the worst thing Deborah shared because I found it so chilling. I’m sort of glad I did now.

Someone will get all the press coverage, attention and readers and it won't be Will. How awful of him to try and take that away from her when she was dying. Her book is her memorial.

BIWitch · 24/10/2019 10:01

I've not had any time for Will Self since he was the guest speaker at The Marketing Society's annual dinner (a very big, glitzy, black tie affair). And he used his speech - which no doubt he was being paid gazillions for - to lambast marketing.

Fine to hate marketing, but don't take their money and then do it Angry

SirVixofVixHall · 24/10/2019 09:55

She is by far the better writer.
I loathe Will Self Self Self for how he treated her .

NoSquirrels · 24/10/2019 09:44

I notice Will Self is also about to publish a memoir. Interesting timing

That was one of her tweets at the news. Something like ‘I just wanted one book. One, for me.’

Never mind, she’ll have the last laugh - her book will be much greater acclaimed than his.

OneTerrificMouse · 24/10/2019 09:44

It has probably gone because TRAs were snipping her posts and discussing in non-positive tones how they felt at the death of a 'transphobe'.
