Did I miss something? Am I dreaming?

Oh, and Dawn Butler Brent's an idiot. But we knew that.

Was just coming on to post her contact details! Will send a nice little card today. I'm really thrilled. Someone's on our side 😆😆😆😆😆

cwg1 · 17/10/2019 23:57

Yes.

Write to her directly.

Elizabeth Truss MP
House of Commons
LONDON
SW1A 0AA

Email addresses at Parliament UK.

We have the right to contact ministers directly about any matters relevant to their ministerial responsibilities.

If you email, you might also like to copy in your MP. I know I bang on, but if/when this gets to legislation, they need to have heard about this from as many people as possible. One of the first excuses will be 'none/very few of my constituents have expressed concern...'

Lots of women sent cards to Joan McAlpine, who is an MSP (as well as some other female MSPs who have spoken up in defence of women's rights):

Pandaintheporridge · 17/10/2019 23:48

Not meaning to trivialise this by my pp, but Dawn Butler seemed to link hate crime with absence of updated GRA.

Pandaintheporridge · 17/10/2019 23:47

I don't see how the GRA will stop the hate crimes against trans people? I mean, violent crimes not stickers with definitions on them. Will some man go "oh I see you have changed your birth certificate so I will not assault you"?

OccasionalKite · 17/10/2019 23:42

scottishbride:
Can we contact her directly if she’s not our MP? In a supportive, thank you so much kind of way. I’m not on Twitter

Send her a nice postcard or greetings card through the post!

I remember a few months ago, a Scottish woman politician said something very sensible and based in reality; and lots of women sent her lovely cards in support, which she displayed in her office!

Datun · 17/10/2019 23:29

What I am interested in is making the right decisions for the people of Britain so that we have proper protection for transgender people and also ensure that we protect our single-sex spaces.

Isn't it telling that being fair to both trans people and women sends the genderists into a fury.

Nothing short of complete colonisation will do.

Lumene · 17/10/2019 23:22

Yes definitely she deserves huge thanks for daring to speak the truth in a measured and sensible way.

Agree completely, Michelle. Safety, privacy and dignity for all. (and 'validation' to be ditched as a concept any legislation could conceivably be based on).

  • oh and also 'only people with a GRC but we'll be handing them out by the bucketload'.

Honestly the third spaces solution is the only one that recognises everyone and all situations, all needs. Except the hardest one which is the validation part.

Michelleoftheresistance · 17/10/2019 22:03

so that we have proper protection for transgender people and also ensure that we protect our single-sex spaces.

That is absolutely something I would get behind.

I am absolutely in favour of creating more spaces, additional provision, ensuring that no one ever has to be in a space where they feel vulnerable, unsafe, where their privacy and dignity is at risk. I'm absolutely in favour of trans people not having to use facilities for a sex they don't feel comfortable being a part of, and having their choice and feelings recognised. There just has to be maintenance of single sex spaces for women in addition, and the courage to put down a line that no one changes sex, and single sex provision is not something that can be identified into in all situations as this harms women and girls.

This will always be the sticking point, it's going to be a very difficult boundary to put down and hold to now. Up to this point it's been the case of 'we will maintain single sex spaces BUT people can be any sex they like' in an attempt to sound like they're not throwing women under the bus. I hope Liz Truss means what it sounds like she means.

truthisarevolutionaryact · 17/10/2019 22:02

Unbelievable that this is the first time (apart from DD) that we've heard an MP in the HoC saying anything in favour of sex segregated spaces. Normally it's "where else you like access to gentlemen?"

Wheat2Harvest · 17/10/2019 21:55

Perhaps a solution would be to take the 'Ladies' and 'Gents' pictures off the door and replace them with signs reading 'XX' and 'XY'.

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 17/10/2019 21:51

we should get the legislation right rather than rushing into things

Yesssssssssss.

teawamutu · 17/10/2019 21:34

As I have said, I completely condemn violence against trans people, and we and the Home Office are doing a lot of work to combat it, but I think it is completely wrong to conflate that with a complex piece of legislation that we need to get right. There are serious concerns about single-sex spaces and ensuring that vulnerable women are protected, and we should get the legislation right rather than rushing into things.

I am afraid that the hon. Lady is trying to make this into a political football. What I am interested in is making the right decisions for the people of Britain so that we have proper protection for transgender people and also ensure that we protect our single-sex spaces.

@MrsSnippyPants

Today's Hansard is up:

MrsSnippyPants · 17/10/2019 21:24

Does anybody know exactly when this was said? I know Butler tweeted about it around noon. When does Hansard release transcripts?

teawamutu · 17/10/2019 21:02

Torn between excitement, and utter fury that I am excited about this. It's fucking pitiful.

And of course its just Dawn Butler Blush got carried away. Apologies Dawn (although you really are still a useful idiot on this matter).

OP posts:
Noflora · 17/10/2019 20:52

Thank you both.

AlwaysTawnyOwl · 17/10/2019 20:51

I think the lady on her right is Victoria Atkins

GCAcademic · 17/10/2019 20:51

Does anyone know who the lady on LT's right is? She said Hear Hear in support of Liz Truss's words.

I think it's Victoria Atkins. She has previously voiced concern about the huge increase in girls identifying as boys, which went down as well as you might expect with the TRAs and Woke Twitter.

Noflora · 17/10/2019 20:43

Dawn Butler clearly thinks she was excluding Transgender in that speech. Surely if she wasn't she'd have clarified?

When Boris was first chosen PM MN pointed out he wanted feedback, so I gave him my pithy opinion. Perhaps many others did the same. Unfortunately I am now inundated with begging mails for funds with nauseating letters from the various top Tories. Having sworn I'd never vote Tory in the future I may reconsider if this is policy and Corbyn is the alternative.
