Im guessing made by some men who cant imagine that people dont use it , and after all "all that flesh" and sexytimes is fun..
Certainly not designed with women in mind.

ArcheryAnnie · 10/10/2019 11:44

Kids really need to hear that it’s ok not to want to see porn and to find it upsetting or scary. Not that it fun, just don’t ask where it came from.

This, this, this, this. There's no message in that video at all that you might not like it, and that it's ok not to like it.

ArcheryAnnie · 10/10/2019 11:42

I think there is a place for an instructional video for children about porn (can't believe I typed that sentence), because kids watch youtube, kids watch porn. and they need to know what absolute misogynist, unreal rapey bullshit they are watching, and proceed accordingly.

This video is not the video we need, because it wraps the "it's acting, also don't watch footage of child rape or animal rape, kids!!!" message up with a ton of "porn is FUN! Carry on watching all that sexytimes!" messages too.

Maybe if this video was edited down to about 25% of it's current length, and cut out all the "porn is positive! go for it!" shit, we might be left with something useful.

Childline jumped the shark some time ago, so I am no longer surprised about them.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 10/10/2019 10:52

Also, I've noticed a consistent framing of the stuff that the sex pos advocates will admit is bad as being the fault of the person being exploited or harmed, as if it's their fault for not preventing it, and it's very troubling. Why are underage kids appearing in porn, and whose fault is that? If your answer if "the kids" then you have fundamentally failed to grasp any of the social dynamics involved.

NumberblockNo1 · 10/10/2019 10:51

Gosh :( I dont think men who make decisions/run childline/ make videos like this this one actually have a clue what it does to women. Sad

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 10/10/2019 10:45

NSFW and made by child line for children

I am 46 years old and am not going to watch this because I don't want to risk getting written up by HR.

A video made by childline. For children.

I'd really like to wake up from the dystopian novel we seem to be stuck in some time soon, please.

Tyrotoxicity · 10/10/2019 10:41

This idea that "it's not real sex" is a bloody stupid message to be giving kids.

They're not daft. They can see it's really happening. Whatever's on the screen is a real thing. But instead of telling them what it is, we tell them what it's not.

If they were told "This is real abuse," they might be better equipped to recognise and reject abuse in their own sex lives instead of recreating and submitting to it.

CharlieParley · 09/10/2019 03:20

Maybe they're trying to do the right thing here. Maybe not. But

  1. anyone who claims that porn is okay apart from a few extreme exceptions is not up to date on the prevalence of violent porn that involves humiliating, degrading, abusing and raping women. This type of porn is now the majority.

  2. anyone who seeks to talk to kids from age 12 and doesn't acknowledge that it is wrong to show children that age porn is doing something wrong. These children are not only below the age of consent, but exposing children to porn at this age is also classed as child sexual abuse.

  3. anyone who attempts to educate children about porn and who does not explain what it does to the adolescent brain and what it can do to their ability to have healthy relationships and normal sexual function is failing children by ignoring known risk factors of porn and porn addiction. Have you ever seen a similar approach to teaching kids about drugs or alcohol?

  4. anyone who manages to deliver a chatty video about porn without mentioning the specific harms it does to women doesn't care about girls, their needs, their safety and their wellbeing. We have solid data that the main consumers of porn are males. By a very, very large margin. The main victims being hurt, both directly in the porn industry and indirectly via the harms it causes, are female. Neglecting to mention this fact signals at best either complete ignorance of the reality of porn, indifference towards girls or at worst straight up misogyny.

These objections are in addition to the excellent point made by pp that this video also ignores the fact that most children do not watch porn, and that they need to know this is okay.

littlbrowndog · 08/10/2019 22:51

And yes not to normalise watching porn so that kids don’t feel weird if they don’t watch porn

littlbrowndog · 08/10/2019 22:49

Yes female that sounds good

Perhaps a video interview with an ex porn star is the way to go? The mental and physical damage, the fact she was in the scrap heap at 25. How it was not fun to make, but painful. It could start if as a laugh about watching porn then have a voice over saying the things the porn star is thinking and feeling. I don't know maybe that would turn some people on even more. I do think the key is educating girls on this.

Kilbranan · 08/10/2019 22:02

Kids really need to hear that it’s ok not to want to see porn and to find it upsetting or scary. Not that it fun, just don’t ask where it came from.
Whilst he did try to cover some of the negative effects of porn the emphasis was on how good it can be.

AugustL · 08/10/2019 21:51

Haven't watched the video tbh. There is so much porn that is based on violence against women, more than sex.

TRIGGER WARNING ⚠️

"I was shocked with cattle prods, beat until I would cry so much I couldn’t breathe, given bruises that would take months to heal, and asphyxiated with plastic bags that the producer would urinate into."

Doyoumind · 08/10/2019 17:39

It was made in 2015, as I said on the other thread, so it's been around a long time.

It's in a YouTube style. I think it's accessible and acknowledges the fact that porn is out there and teenagers are watching it. I'd rather they also watched this, from someone they potentially respect, than believe it is a real depiction of sex.

BeMoreMagdalen · 08/10/2019 16:43

Well, quite. It's a free country and all that jazz, but when society actually decides something should be discouraged, there's no shortage of firm rules shunting people 10 feet from buildings if they use the products or covering up the products or sticking upsetting pictures on them and doing everything possible to make it clear it's not healthy or sensible to use them.

But because our culture is so damned sick we've made porn accessible on the frigging bus, we are apparently forced to present it as a fun option with a few limp caveats about not watching men shagging cartoon cows. Bollocks.

RuffleCrow · 08/10/2019 16:35

Of course we can say 'porn is bad' just as we can say 'smoking is bad'. The nspcc doesn't put out videos teaching kids how to 'smoke safely'. Ffs.

Juells · 08/10/2019 16:32

IIRC it said for 12 and over

BarbaraStrozzi · 08/10/2019 16:16

I'm kind of with Truthisnot on this. It is bloody hard to get through to teens. The clip does at least raise issues of consent, working conditions (that was what the chicken nuggets comment was about - we wouldn't eat them if we knew how they were made), lack of realism, impacts on your brain chemistry, that much of it is demeaning to women, that it's the male gaze writ large. But it does it so fast, as PP have said, most teens will only take away the message of "it's fun, fun, fun."

The problem (as others have said) is the bloody jaunty delivery and the "of course it's unproblematic fun if you only search for the nice stuff and only use it in moderation" (pro tip - the end user cannot tell, at the point of consumption, whether the participants were consenting).

I shall have a dig on the Childline website later and try to find out what age group this is aimed at. Hopefully 13-14 year olds rather than 8-9 year olds - now that would be horrific and utterly unjustifiable.

There's got to be something in between this and reading Gail Dines aloud to DS... Anyone got any ideas?

Whatisthisfuckery · 08/10/2019 15:51

Yes yes yes there are some useful messages in amongst the fast talking, but I can’t get over the fact that this video is about porn, and aimed at kids. Let’s not lose sight of that fact.

Antibles · 08/10/2019 15:01

Appalling. Complete normalisation. A entire generation being told porn use is acceptable. Why don't they just add: "Girls, if you feel betrayed and upset that your boyfriend is wanking off to videos of hundreds of other naked women, many of whom are having quite painful, degrading and frightening things done to them, you'll simply have to adjust your thinking. Oh and no matter what Tom says, he will be wanting even expecting to try some of this shit with you."

Where is the argument that porn is the abuse of women on an industrial scale? Nowhere. Brushed off with the phrase "Porn is like chicken nuggets: if we knew how it was made, we'd probably lose our appetites. The porn industy is sketchy at best." Wtf?? No, let's not talk about coercion, trafficking, degradation, humiliation and physical harm. That would force men to confront the harm porn does and spoil their fun.

Yes they got the legal points over and something about how it affects the brain, but it's buried later on, having already given a thumbs up to porn use in general. It's the equivalent of letting the confectionary and soft drinks industry write public health materials on nutrition.

I agree with a PP that it's just plain wrong to say it is isn't real. Those are real women being subjected to real sex acts. It is real. And we know it's being replicated in the bedroom by young people.

Oh and the entitlement being fostered in the bit about imagination not being good enough.

Gingerkittykat · 08/10/2019 14:45

Porn is like chicken nuggets.

Also the message that an under 18 starring in "porn" is acting illegally, not that the person making and distributing the images is the one acting in the wrong. That message is likely to put someone off who has been abused or exploited from going to get help.

clevername · 08/10/2019 14:34

I'm not advocating for porn, I just think that some of the messages that this video expresses are valid and, actually, fairly well put. I know that porn isn't 'not real' in the sense that it is definitely happening to the women/men that are taking part, I mean that it doesn't reflect real life, real bodies, real sex. That's an incredibly important message to share with young people (notwithstanding how you might feel about porn generally as, let's face it, porn is a fact right now) and one that I think this video gets across fairly well.

butteryellow · 08/10/2019 13:56

explains how it's not real

I mean, it is - those things are really being done to some poor woman - it's not like a fake sword that disappears into a hilt when the actor stabs someone, some blokes penis really is going into one of that woman's orifices. And worse.

'Fun' is not how the the videos on the front page of pornhub could ever be described, and that's what kids are going to be watching - they're not popping down to blockbuster and renting a video from the naughty section.

BeMoreMagdalen · 08/10/2019 13:53

Well, it's been said on this thread that saying 'porn is bad, don't watch porn' is not the way to go, but that entire video was 'porn is harmless entertainment, like Hollywood, with a few extreme exceptions, don't watch too much of it!' which I can't see is any more effective than dangling some poisoned sweeties in front of kids saying 'It's tasty, but don't have too much!'

Aberhonddu · 08/10/2019 13:46

I did manage to watch it until the end, he does make some good points in a ridiculously over the top manner, but repeating don't do that several times is plain stupid. We all know when you tell a child or even an adult not to do something many of them will just go ahead and do whatever they've been told not to do.
