Right now YT is showing me adds for Grammarly and for soap. Apparently it's showing children ads designed to groom them into signing up for surgical mutilation. Why is that allowed?

Yes, that's my question. (And I always get bloody Grammarly.)

Also Flowers DuMonde.

Doyoumind · 06/10/2019 22:27

Ads will be targeted based both on content relevant to the advertiser's intended audience and profile of the user.

Then there is this:

TransgenderTrend
@Transgendertrd

'It has come to our attention that someone has bought the website address transgendertrend.co.uk and redirected it to the Mermaids website. We are very concerned that this misrepresents our organisation and will mislead parents and young people seeking help.'

"I couldn't be mean in school..."

Or are they saying "I couldn't be me in school"?

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 06/10/2019 19:41

It's an attempt to recruit all the vulnerable, unhappy kids and convince them that transition is the solution to their problems.

RiotAndAlarum · 06/10/2019 19:39

If that is the ad, it's vile.

"I couldn't be mean in school..." WHAT THE FUCK, MERMAIDS?! THERE ARE CHILDREN WHO WANT TO BE NICE!

Gah.
Then all the "I felt lost. I was made fun of. People laughed at me...."

That's just bullying, and it seems pretty damn external to the child. Not an inner essence, not a deeply held self identification. It's the same old listening to other people tell you who you are. And Mermaids is telling kids "who they are". Not to mention this is based on incredibly flimsy "evidence"... in fact, it's hard to imagine how there could be more false positives than from these symptoms. And the consequences of these false positives are so serious.

Aw, Vix. 😢

We’re taking the track that we would no more agree to a minor having breast removal than we would agree to a minor having breast implants. We’ve got some years before it becomes a viable option, so hopefully she will weather the gender storm. She’s not even actually identifying AS a boy, just wants to look like one.

SirVixofVixHall · 06/10/2019 19:25

DuMondeB that is heartbreaking, I feel so sorry for girls now.

SirVixofVixHall · 06/10/2019 19:23

She is not in the UK. I thought she was still 16, but think she may have just turned 17.
DH and I both cried. It is so distressing.

DuMondeB · 06/10/2019 19:21

Private surgeons will do double mastectomy at 17 in the U.K.
Polish/Turkish cosmetic surgeons will do younger.
Some cosmetic surgeons who do breast augmentation/reduction will do ‘top’ on the down low, they don’t advertise it, news travels via word of mouth. No diagnosis of gender dysphoria necessary.

NHS wait times make 19 the minimum, that will extend as the masses of girls recently referred to gender services travel through the system.

Not many NHS surgeons offer trans surgeries, and it’s not an area that’s easy to recruit professionals to, unsurprisingly.

OhHolyJesus · 06/10/2019 19:12

I thought you had to be 19 for top surgery, god what is happening?!

Right so we complain - Charity Commission and advertising standards and wrote you tube. They can't get away with this.

NeurotrashWarrior · 06/10/2019 19:05

Oh Jesus DuMond, poor kid Sad

DuMondeB · 06/10/2019 18:50

That ad is like a short episode of Black Mirror.

Vix, my stepdaughter, 13, got catcalled for the first time a few weeks ago. She is now wearing two sports bras at once and talking about top surgery.
It’s beyond upsetting.

Anyone who sees this ad come up needs to hit the report button (I notice the YouTube link has comments turned off, and the number of people who have viewed it compared to the number of people who like it doesn’t paint Mermaids in a good light at all).

SirVixofVixHall · 06/10/2019 18:42

I feel ragey now. A friend’s dd has just has her breasts amputated, although they called it the twee “top surgery”. She is 17.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 06/10/2019 18:38

Does YT advertising work on an algorithm that tracks stuff it thinks you're interested in or do the channels decide what ads to accept

AFAIK, channels cannot choose their ads (though I think advert age ratings will have to be appropriate for the channel age ratings)

Adverts can be targeted by the advertiser, I don't know how finely

YouTube will also show you "relevant" ads, in the same way as Google ads elsewhere.

RaveOnThisCrazyFeeling · 06/10/2019 18:36

Horrible ad. Noted that both of the evil bullies depicted are girls. And the not-so-subtle suggestion of suicidal ideation, in the countdown clock where Ethan decides if Ethan 'wants to continue'.

Sinister.

BeMoreMagdalen · 06/10/2019 18:26

Doesn't surprise me that it's a gaming themed recruitment video, either, given the large support for Mermaids in the gamer/Incel online community. It's very 'on brand'. If your brand is creepy cult trying to snare confused kids and munchymums and set them on a path of lifelong medication and experimental cosmetic surgery.

Hell of a brand, that.

DuMondeB · 06/10/2019 17:29

The creator of Minecraft has been ‘cancelled’ for ‘Transphobia’ funnily enough:

TheAlternativeTentacle · 06/10/2019 17:25

I saw this earlier, and I must say I wasn't surprised. They used to bribe kids over to their stand with puppies and sweets.

Straight out the child catcher text book that lot.

NeurotrashWarrior · 06/10/2019 17:09

Good point unwilly. Only boys play computer games obvs.

NeurotrashWarrior · 06/10/2019 17:08

Of course they have to brainwash children - it makes some of the founder members feel so much better about their batshit parenting choices.

As well and a steady income of kids to provide the CEO with - a steady income.

NeurotrashWarrior · 06/10/2019 17:07

It's like putting a professionally produced pro ana video on that Cosmo for young girls site, just weird and completely inappropriate.

Totally.
