Online if you want to take it. You translate the drag phrase.
How nice to see that those putting it together didn't think that "fishy" meaning a very feminine drag queen may be offensive....

Am tickled by use of ableist slur to call other people out on their “bigotry” 😂

Check your ableism and misogyny and the mote in your own eye, polly!

It’s not homophobic for a woman to object to the term”fish”.

Good Feminist Current article, which mentions the comment by the male MC at Manchester Pride that the group of lesbian protestors at London Pride in 2018 should have been "dragged off by their saggy tits"

Gay men don't get a free pass on misogyny.

Just disturbingly malicious. He came across as someone who hated women

Absolutely! I used to go to the Vauxhall Tavern in the early days of 'Duckie' with my best friend ( male & gay) and found the humour nasty, wilfully offensive and totally unfunny. I always felt it barely disguised a distinct antipathy towards women/the female.

Justhadathought · 04/10/2019 10:20

*The first time I heard the word fishy used to describe women was by a gay colleague and said with a disgusted sneer.

Yes, I first came across this term in the early 1980's when I was talking to a newly 'ou't young gay man who had moved down to London from Dundee. I'd not been aware of it before - but it was definitely a term with negative connotations and was an expression of disgust at female genitalia.

Agree with Bob. The first time I heard the word fishy used to describe women was by a gay colleague and said with a disgusted sneer. I had always got on well with him and was really surprised. It felt misogynistic. It was a comment that denoted that women were disgusting and dirty in some way.

I really don't like it and am surprised the BBC would use it so casually.

Justhadathought · 04/10/2019 10:15

Climate change, nuclear security, biorisk reduction, positively shaping the development of artificial intelligent, improving health in poorer countries, and Promoting peace and international coordination to name a few.

Most of these issues you mention at some point come down to a lack of respect for natural and the natural world. Mankind's efforts at control and domination are now reaping their consequences.
Women have always been associated with nature and ' Mother Earth' and the feminine body and sexuality rigidly controlled. At one point it was even considered that women had no souls. and women still have no face and no voice in countries around the world.

Many issues of poverty and ill health world-wide can be attributed to the neglect of women; their lack of education & empowerment...which is why Oxfam ( the irony given recent exposures of sexual exploitation of women in Haiti) openly states that empowering women is one of their main tasks.

That you don't consider the oppression of women a major issue suggests to me that you have never really thought about it because you are a gay man? Not that being gay precludes a man from questioning privileges and patterns. but it is certainly true that in recent times the full force of woman hatred and misogyny has revealed itself more clearly in sections of the gay male community.

That so many gay men cannot see or understand why the whole trans agenda is distinctly offensive and damaging. And by 'offensive' we are not talking about in a curtain twitching daily Male kind of way - but a powerful and deep kind of offence that does not consider women as full human beings; or that dismisses 'women's issues' as trivial.

'Women's issues' are not trivial at all and many of us here have spent a life time struggling with them. So you like drag, and it is part of your culture........therefore it must not be questioned, and if it is those questions must be dismissed.

How is drag not the same as blackface?

YippeeKayakOtherBuckets · 04/10/2019 09:27

This is wokeness in a nutshell.

Objecting to an insulting term = hate speech.

Confused
Ereshkigal · 04/10/2019 09:13

Unfortunately that word doesn't have much power here

Except it's actually a banned slur on MN. However most of the women of FWR don't report it, as we would rather everyone has freedom of speech we have the freedom to be critical of it, as it shows up the misogyny. Like using the term "fishy". People are free to use it, and we are free to point out the misogyny.

Michelleoftheresistance · 04/10/2019 09:10

I smell Terf vibes

Unfortunately that word doesn't have much power here, it won't cause a fearful and guilty rush to apologise, because it isn't a word that has much meaning really. And I think you did use it just in the hope it would make people behave in the way I suspect you're used to when that power word is used.

I feel very attacked right now

No, that power phrase doesn't work well here either I'm afraid. You have the option of hiding a thread if you don't like how it's going, you can report a post that breaks guidelines, but where it's merely people disagreeing with you and explaining why, it's your responsibility as an adult to manage your own resilience when you choose to go into a public forum and put forward a contentious point of view, rather than push female socialisation buttons on other posters to protect and nurture you.

putting forward other opinions, ones that don't foster hate

Another power word that is used for effect rather than with any meaning. There is no 'hate' here. In anyone's posts. Look love, you're not exactly tolerating anyone else putting forward opinions that you don't agree with, are you? You're not leading the way in tolerance of a range of point of views, or having equal expectations that everyone here should behave in the same way. What you're doing really is complaining about not receiving the deferential behaviour that you expect to a certain set of political views and the reactions you expect to dog whistle words and phrases you're familiar with.

PurpleCrowbar · 04/10/2019 09:08

Is 'attacked' ----> 'get a grip' an argument Mac is having with Macself?

Weird.

Quaffy · 04/10/2019 09:02

There's no room for hate, biggotary, or ignorance in the world

I completely agree. I don’t think objecting to the use of the word fishy is hateful, bigoted or ignorant. I think it is facile to try to shut down people’s opinions by calling them bigots unless that can be substantiated, and I haven’t seen any argument made here.

The fact a word may be part of a culture doesn’t make it ok.

Agrona · 04/10/2019 08:43

Which ‘girl’? Which ‘god’? Who (or what) does the girl need to get a grip on?
7/10 for alliteration.

testing987654321 · 04/10/2019 08:26

Good god girl get a grip

Suddenly feeling a lot more confident? I think you'll find infantilising women by calling them girls doesn't go down well on here.

Campervan69 · 04/10/2019 08:21

Why is the feminist board under attack by MRA types again? Just just go away and leave us alone if you are not a feminist. No feminist would be in favour of this so don't pretend that they would. This is supposedly woman only space for feminists to discuss issues around feminism. It makes me feel very unsafe and attacked here to have men's rights activists coming on attacking us. There are no doubt many forums you could go on and glory in how gay men mock women and call them fishy this is not one of them.
