Ideas for what we can do:

Theatres etc - go up to box office loudly asking 'where are the ladies'?' again and again as loudly as you can so the representative has to keep repeating the answer - if you're in a group, take it in turns for variety.

Ring an offending restaurant and book a table for six. Then ask 'I assume you have separate men's and women's loos?' then when they say no, say 'ah no, that doesn't work for us. I'll cancel that and we'll book at (name bitterest rival restaurant that does have separate loos) instead'. Get everyone you know to do it. Make sure you've blocked your number.

Come out of cubicle with full moon cup and wash it out in front of any men present (just pray they're not menophiliac).

Stickers. Lots of stickers.

Learn the statistics so you can recite the evidence of sexual assaults in mixed space etc etc whenever you're contradicted. 'In fact, Home Office statistics show that xx% ... ' etc.

Train your daughters to understand why we are saying no and to have the confidence to speak out. And your sons, too.

Just looked on their Twitter feed. They are crowing over looking after the needs of deaf visitors on other Twitter threads. I cannot believe that deaf women feel safer in mixed sex toilets than single sex ones Angry.

TruthOnTrial · 13/11/2019 12:53

Trying to pretend that going into a public space with strangers bears any similarity to being at home with family sharing facilities is just bare faced lying and manipulation.

Also, yes, children and women are [too often] at risk in their own homes/toilets too.

OneEpisode · 02/11/2019 07:31

Sorry to bump an old thread but I noticed this tweet:
mobile.twitter.com/MuseumToilets/status/1189135810609721345
They are Re-tweeting @museumhour

“Gender neutral loos- just like you have at hime”

I’m not on Twitter. I do have a nice safe loo in my home, I think the museum people haven’t conceived that many women aren’t so lucky..

Datun · 07/10/2019 05:54

Apparently it's dawning on men that women, female teens and little girls will be using the 'with urinal' loos.

My sister in law and my two nieces (9 and 14) are keen to help that realisation to its conclusion.

MonChatEstMagnifique · 07/10/2019 00:38

I have occasionally had the misfortune to come across some wet on floors, but I have never seen blood anywhere

Lucky you.

My cousin used to clean at an airport, she always says the state of the women's toilets shocked her.

Nothing wrong with pouring it down sink and washing away

Maybe to you, but I really don't want this to be a thing people do. I do not think I'm alone on this.

TruthOnTrial · 07/10/2019 00:27

I have occasionally had the misfortune to come across some wet on floors, but I have never seen blood anywhere.

Never.

I don't like seeing a pool of blood at the bottom of the loo at first sight something dark lurking down the pan strikes me as a poo! Thats when I feel vomitty.

Nothing wrong with pouring it down sink and washing away.

I had to laugh at the teaspoon of blood. I pour away many full mooncups in a day, each being an eggcups worth. Theres no way thats only a teaspoon, even from just one emptying.

MonChatEstMagnifique · 07/10/2019 00:21

Its all washed away, no woman is going to leave blood all over the sink

Really? I've gone in many ladies loos to find blood/piss on the seat/floor. Not all women clean up after themselves unfortunately. But these same women will clean the sink well when they pour the contents of their full mooncup down it? I don't think so.

However, I really think this should be normalised instead of demonising it.

Periods should be normalised, of course. But I still don't want to see people's bodily fluids being carried across a room and poured down a sink...to make a point. Many things are normal, we don't do them all in front of strangers.

but I would happily do a dirty protest all over the mixed sex loo sinks, by tipping red colour cornflour water down sinks, and leaving it there.

I just don't get this at all. It makes us, women, look pathetic and crazy. And we're not !

TruthOnTrial · 07/10/2019 00:06

monchat it wasn't a pop at you. It was a direct comparison with how many men, and women find breast milk abhorrent and the thought of bf vomit inducing.

But here we are reading how educators are promoting shit eating, no promotion of positive breast feeding, or period blood positive messages. No, the vile stuff takes precedence, there are many that find menstrual blood disgusting and would be horrified to use moon cups.

However, I really think this should be normalised instead of demonising it.

DuMondeB · 06/10/2019 23:13

Hand dryers blow out faecal matter. Public toilets are gross and a bit of menstrual blood down the sink won’t give anyone HIV.

Whatthingsexactly · 06/10/2019 22:58

Tipping a cupful of menstrual blood down a public sink is not OK at all.

HIV can be transmitted via menstrual blood for starters.

It also will pool in the sink u bend, just like it does in the more visible toilet bowl. You don’t really do this orchid, surely?

MonChatEstMagnifique · 06/10/2019 21:36

I'm not pretending. I just don't care, because I see menstruation as a natural bodily function that's no more disgusting than blowing your nose.

Menstruation isn't the issue. It's any blood. I refuse to believe many women want cups of blood being carried across the room. Someone mentioned dropping the mooncup down the loo, what if you dropped it whist carrying it when it's full. I really wouldn't want to get splashed with anyone else's blood because they wanted to prove a point.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 06/10/2019 21:14

(Less so in fact in that someone washing out a mooncup next to me isn't going to give me the flu.)

MonChatEstMagnifique · 06/10/2019 21:11

It's a sink, traces of urine and feces also go down it when hands are washed. Unless you're rubbing your hands all over the bowl of the sink I'm honestly not sure what the problem is (and if you are, maybe stop doing that).

Yes, traces of those things. We don't go putting lots of it down there. (And if you are, maybe stop doing that)Wink

I think you need to stop pretending that we want women carrying cups of blood across the room, especially when it's to make a point.

Also OP wants us to tell our children what opinions they should have instead of teaching them to think for themselves and harass theatre staff etc. I don't mind mixed sex toilets but completely understand that some people don't like them but some of the OPs suggestions sound ridiculous.

MonChatEstMagnifique · 06/10/2019 20:47

I've already said, if anyone needs to rinse it out they should. Pour the contents into the loo first. But to carry it full of blood isn't great. I really do not know anyone who would do this or want to do this.

I'm not sure what's so vile about menstrual blood. Is all blood vile to you or just the kind that comes out of a vagina?

I wouldn't want someone carrying a cup full of any blood really across a room and pouring it into a sink in a public toilet, nothing to do with it coming out of a vagina. I suffer from heavy nosebleeds, I wouldn't deliberately stand and let my blood drip all over something. I think most people keep their bodily fluids to themselves as much as possible unless you choose to share. Wink

Some think breast milk and breast feeding is vile also, a long hill to climb indeed.

Not me. Breast feeding is to feed a child. OP was suggesting what she did to make a point.

TruthOnTrial · 06/10/2019 20:09

No woman should be told her own blood is vile.

Especially when, from what I've learnt lately, peiple eat shit?

What a strange strange world.

DuMondeB · 06/10/2019 20:03

If you have sensitive skin or are prone to thrush or BV you really do need to rinse the moon cup out before reinsertion - wiping it out with toilet paper leaves fibres behind that you really don’t want internally.

If you are an organised person you can do it in the cubicle with a bottle of water, but clumsy and disorganised people would be better off using a sink, they are too bloody (pun intended!) expensive to risk dropping down the lav!

MonChatEstMagnifique · 06/10/2019 19:59

I wouldn't rinse it out at the sink because OBVIOUSLY you need to put it back in again.

OP did suggest walking out of the loo with a full mooncup and washing it out in front of everyone though.

But the point is that women do messy bloody stuff and our hands are sometimes bloody. And II don't want to be washing my hands next to someone who is going to make me feel bad about that.

Yep, but most women would clean up as much as possible using loo roll, not deliberately put on some kind of show to prove a point. I have never ever seen a woman come out of a toilet with wet blood over their hands, although I'm sure many may have some dried on their hands which they wash off. Noone would be disgusted by a woman doing this, in fact they probably wouldn't notice. What OP suggests is vile.

Lucindainthesky · 06/10/2019 19:41

@Downwind of course feedback can be given to management but how often do you think those at the bottom of the food chain are taken any notice of?

If it's something you feel strongly about then I don't understand why you wouldn't make your point to somebody higher up.

If you insist on making yourself heard to an underling then may I suggest front of house staff rather than box office? Toilets really have nothing to do with tickets.

Fortunately our theatre retains single sex toilets!

OrchidInTheSun · 06/10/2019 19:11

It's not blood - it's uterine lining. Only a teaspoon of blood per period! as my biology teacher was fond of telling us.

I wouldn't rinse it out at the sink because OBVIOUSLY you need to put it back in again.

OrchidInTheSun

That is preferable to someone walking out with a cup of blood to tip in a sink I wash my hands in. Not sure about others, but don't put my hands in toilets. At home use the sink, in public toilets, I'm sure I wouldn't be the only woman to think this is vile and unnecessary. I have a few friends who use a mooncup, they wouldn't dream of doing this.

OrchidInTheSun · 06/10/2019 13:29

MonChat, if you tip a full mooncup down the loo, the blood pools in the bottom of the pan and it takes 3-4 flushes to get rid of. I always empty mine by pouring the contents down the sink.

littlbrowndog · 06/10/2019 13:08

But isn’t there also the problem of hidden cameras - how are the old vic going to deal with this
Before they changed to toilets to mixed sex at least a man could be challenged for bein* in the toilet
Some men gawd know why like to record women in toilets
