Call to support women MPs in face of abuse and death threats to family

Could I ask people on this board tonight to look in at the Westministenders threads on the Brexit boards, regarding the death threats as the op states. Jo Swinson's child has been threatened, Anna Soubry's mother has been threatened. We have a Prime minister who is using inflammatory language appearing to support and enable such threats. Women need to stand together against this upsurge of threats against our representatives.

I don't often start threads on Mumsnet and I don't think I'll be able to keep a close eye on this one, but the current events in Parliament are truly shocking me. The Prime Minister today, after that use of language, openly stated that he would not abide by legislation passed by the House of Commons.

Antoinette Sandbach was just on BBC news talking about the harassment she has received, despite the fact that she voted for the WA three times. The goalposts have shifted so much now that a deal of any sort is being portrayed as betrayal or capitulation or surrender.

Amber Rudd agrees that the language used by the PM is a problem. She's also disappointed with the dismissal of MPs fears.
"The sort of language I'm afraid we've seen more and more of coming out from Number 10 does incite violence."
"It's the sort of language people think legitimises a more aggressive approach and sometimes violence."

"the labour benches need to take a good hard look at themselves before they start quibbling over words."

Heavens! I had no idea Anna Soubry was now a Labour party member! And Jo Swinson, too! When did they join?

Any woman who has ever been on the receiving end of emotional abuse from a man would recognise the tactics BJ has used. It is somewhat triggering; verbally abusive, lying, gaslighting, the smirking, the flying monkeys. He has the whole range of tools

^ Yes absolutely.

powershowerforanhour · 27/09/2019 02:31

Like Arnold, I too was reminded of the late Rev Ian Paisley at his ranting, shitstirring worst.
Except big Ian did have some sort of conviction.
Johnston is just cynically running the clock down by keeping everyone at each other's throats.

bettybeans · 26/09/2019 23:29

They might not be interested in protecting the rights of women in sense of GRA but when it comes to things like this I don't care. I don't care what party they belong to. It's completely unacceptable and it's entirely driven by BJ and cronies. Brexit party people can do one too. This inflammatory language is putting people in real danger.

It won't be Boris on the receiving end. He has armed guards, huge amounts of personal protection, he doesn't even read his own mail FFS. It's your average MP, and women are much softer targets.

I don't care what your views on Brexit are, no right minded person should be able to sit back and let this pass.

I agree it's a time to stand together for women's rights. I disagree that the best way to do that is to pretend the Tories are worse than every other party. Or to pretend that Jess Phillips, etc, are spearheading a campaign against emotive language/violence against women when they have allowed this culture to flourish by their attitude to the TRA threats.
It feels a bit like when the WEP used to come on MN because they needed mums to turn up for photo calls but they didn't actually want to listen to our concerns or to define women. They wanted us to turn up and shut up. I'd have a lot more respect if Labour, the LibDems, the Greens and the Tories were all apologising for the way they have enabled this toxicity rather than pretending it's always someone else's problem to fix.

who the fuck do you think youre talking to?

Squirrels, obviously.

DarkAtEndOfUk · 26/09/2019 21:16

They need bodyguards to protect against death threats. Why are you focusing on vocabulary when Johnson was clearly minimising those?

For others, if we will not support women public figures against violence now, we will lose them, and then how much support can you ever hope to gain against TRAs? This is the time for us all to raise awareness of just how violent and aggressive Britain is, just how much aggression is becoming normalised. For everyone, everywhere, who is a victim of it.

Women are fair game right now and their anger at facing threats and intimidation - be they MPs, academics, breastfeeding mothers or just women meeting to discuss their rights - is being dismissed as hysterical and ridiculous by the left and the right. This is why feminism is not a left or right or right issue. Because the right are doing it, and so are the left.

This. Thank you all posters for connecting the dots. I have learned a lot from this thread.

At this point I am frightened for all women and girls, regardless of what kind of Brexit we end up with.

It is more important than ever, that all women stand together for women’s rights.

Helmetbymidnight · 26/09/2019 21:12

Laura Kuensberg needs a bodyguard to go to your ducking conference, you whining sanctimonious gits. Sort yourselves out first.

who the fuck do you think youre talking to?

LloydBraun · 26/09/2019 21:11

“ both things are wrong” but some things are worse than others.
I can’t get worked up about Boris saying humbug, sorry. Just can’t. Because that’s exactly what it was, and the labour benches need to take a good hard look at themselves before they start quibbling over words. No one needs bodyguards to protect themselves from words. Laura Kuensberg needs a bodyguard to go to your ducking conference, you whining sanctimonious gits. Sort yourselves out first.

This is what feminist solidarity is supposed to mean - it does not matter if I agree with you, or even like you. If you are a woman and you are being verbally and physically intimidated and attacked, I will stand with you.

TheElementsSong · 26/09/2019 21:02

"Squirrel!"

Helmetbymidnight · 26/09/2019 21:00

What is all this 'your side' and 'one of your own' nonsense?
Do you assume people who rightly dislike Johnson's dog whistle rhetoric are automatically Labour voters?

That is part of the problem right there

well said. im so fed up with this- this is our Prime Minister we're talking about - or rather we're not talking about because for some reason every time you try and talk about our PM, the conversation turns to something/someone else.

I don't understand why people feel the need to argue with others with cries of 'what about...?' If you think that other women also need defending, send them messages of support too, and write to MPs from that party too. Point it out so that others can also write. But don't defend a wrong with pointing out another wrong. Both things are wrong. One person's wrong can not be defended by pointing out a completely different person's wrong. By all means point out all the wrongs, but please don't defend them. Hold everyone to the same standards.

Birdsfoottrefoil · 26/09/2019 20:38

Why do you think they dont care about what is happening re the trans attacks? They want it

That was my point - the far left are encouraging this

DarkAtEndOfUk · 26/09/2019 20:34

I see the PM being asked to tone down the rhetoric by women MPs as part and parcel of a protest against, or an increased awareness of, the increasing tendency for abuse in our society and a decreasing safety for women. As the beginning of an attempt to stop political institutions from turning a blind eye to such things. As such, I don't see complaints about the prime minister's behaviour and rhetoric and the increasing incidence of TRA protests against women's groups as opposed at all, I see it as parts of the same thing. I'm fairly sure, from memory, that someone in parliament either yesterday or today spoke about the wider impacts on free speech in society in general.
