Not sure of the age of KS3 but this is the BBC stepping in to explain sexuality.

They even have a test to tells you you are wrong if you dont agree with gender being about sexuality.

And they have support links to LGB++++++++++ groups but nothing for young people who are heterosexual, especailly young women are being pressurised by pornified boys and men

They can say trans is not re-inforcing stereotypes until they're blue in the hair

*Snortage.

I'm gonna have to steal this one.

"We may be a woman, but identify with the outlook and social norms of men".

The outlook and social norms?

How is this anything other than total and utter sexism? How is this fucking progressive?!

jamrollyolly · 20/09/2019 21:08

You yes, at least they're admitting that gender is a social construct and different to sex.
If only they could find a way to describe the idea of being transgender without resorting to stereotypes ......

Oh wait that's not possible. So what are they going to do?!

Sorry Winehas been consumed.

youkiddingme · 20/09/2019 20:55

It does at least, sort-of, differentiate between sex and gender. 'our gender is psychological and social' - that actually sort of hints at what gender construct is. Or am I seeing what I want to see?
Other than that I find it all a bit of a mishmash of things that could be taken in different ways.

"We may be a woman, but identify with the outlook and social norms of men".

What are the outlook and social norms of men?

How do they differ from the outlook and social norms of women?

And look at this.

"There are different types of sexuality:

Straight: attracted to people of the opposite sex or gender.

Gay: mostly attracted to people of the same sex or gender. This term is used by both men and women.

Lesbian: mostly attracted to people of the same sex or gender. This term refers specifically to women".

So straight people are allowed to have exclusive opposite-sex attraction. Okay.

However, gay and lesbian people are not allowed to have exclusive same-sex attraction. They get "mostly" attracted to the same sex or gender. Not okay.

How is this not homophobia and lesbophobia?

jamrollyolly · 20/09/2019 20:27

I was expecting worse to be honest, at least there were no lady brains or born in the wrong body bullshit.

They are producing this stuff- bbc Bitesize is usually hugely helpful in areas such as RE, maths etc. They had to say something about this issue and of course, ( with their task masters ) don't want to offend.

For whatever reason, some teens do identify strongly with being of the other sex. If they're producing work in this area, the bbc has to consider this topic. Would it be worth brainstorming some better ways of phrasing ?

We obviously can't suggest contacting support groups or they would be bound to list mermaids.

HandsOffMyRights · 20/09/2019 20:23

Yes, please complain as this drivel is aimed at children.

pombear · 20/09/2019 20:23

BBC seems to have left sex at the door and gone flying off with gender-feels with this one.

Which makes for much confusion about sexual feelings (particularly if you're young, trying to work out who you are, and happen to be reading that article)

Many people feel uncomfortable with the idea that there are other sexualities besides being straight and that people can identify with a gender that is different to their sex.

Those two statements don't work together - different sexualities. (ie being attracted to sexes other than the 'traditional' straight M + F. But also suddenly,... your gender doesn't = sex. So what on earth does 'sexuality' become? )

"Out-dated LGB" = about attraction to sex. You know, the body stuff, outdated fuddy duddy stuff!

T = decouples sex from 'gender' stereotypes and presentation, regardless of your reality-based sex. You're attracted to stereotypes associated with a certain sex, regardless of the body it's attached to.

The question becomes who's uncomfortable about what? Sex? Gender? What is 'straight' when gender doesn't = sex?

The TQIA+ end of the spectrum seems to be really having to reach to justify their point of view right now.

And organisations like the BBC seem to be up for helping them reach up to that gender-fairy-sky to argue their case, even when it makes absolutely no fucking sense at all!

“We may be a woman, but identify with the outlook and social norms of men.”

So I’m Transgender according to the BBC. But I am a woman who says I’m a woman. Adult human female woman. So does that make me a transman transwoman? Or is this a bit of nonsense? I know it has just peaked my boyfriend to see that as according to elements by having long hair he is a transwoman! Or it could be we are comfortable being who we are, I’m the mechanic female and he makes a mean dinner

PaleBlueMoonlight · 20/09/2019 20:06

Make sure you complain/query it. Make them explain it.

BeMoreMagdalen · 20/09/2019 20:04

They can say trans is not re-inforcing stereotypes until they're blue in the hair, but they can never, ever explain it without sexist stereotypes, and when that is pointed out, an ooey-woo sensation inside that cannot be defined.

Utter horsedung.

MIdgebabe · 20/09/2019 19:56

I outlook through 2 eyes, the same as dh.

stillathing · 20/09/2019 19:49

What is the "outlook of men" ?

Outlook, as in result?

Outlook, as in the way men think?

MIdgebabe · 20/09/2019 19:34

Most people are probably none binary. So what?

HandsOffMyRights · 20/09/2019 19:29

^We may be male, but feel more comfortable thinking of ourselves as a female.

We may be a woman, but identify with the outlook and social norms of men.

When we feel this way, we are transgender.^

Oh ok. So if I like motorbikes and Airfix models, I'm transgender?

HappyDinosaur · 20/09/2019 19:26

So according to that if I like playing football that makes me transgender! Who knew?

inkydinky · 20/09/2019 19:19

Ks3 is 11-14

I don’t follow your point re gender being about sexuality?

Turns out I’m transgender according to the BBC though. Fascinating!
