She's such a loss. I'm sorry I didn't meet her.

BlueBrush · 31/05/2021 20:59

Thanks @NecessaryScene1, I'd not seen that before.

NecessaryScene1 · 31/05/2021 20:24

Just a shame about the audio quality - you might need to mess with your volume a lot and/or use headphones...

JoodyBlue · 31/05/2021 20:16

History remembers the truth tellers eventually. Thanks so much for this @NecessaryScene1

Posted this a while back on Ovarit, but this seems like a good place/time:

If you've only seen Magdalen's own videos, here's a fantastic piece of her live, unprompted and unscripted - I expect most here haven't seen this.

It's a meeting from Bristol in 2018, with other familiar faces on the panel. The protests surrounding the meeting were part of the "Trans Kids: It's Time To Talk" documentary that Stella O'Malley did for Channel 4. (That I still haven't got around to watching).

During the discussion at the end, someone asks about advice on how to deal with student unions trying to no-platform "TERFs".

A voice comes up from the back from the bar, and a certain feminist from Edinburgh is dragged (drunk) up to the mic:

The crowd goes wild.

I love this video with Magdalen and Kelly J - totally not performing "Posie Parker" and just being herself. It really shows me that the sheros of this fight are just ordinary women, showing extraordinary courage.
ArabellaScott · 31/05/2021 19:48

Ah, there's nobody like Magdalen. She was a one-off. Smile

JediGnot · 31/05/2021 19:21

I know that mumsnet doesn't approve of dredging old threads, but I hope this is a reasonable exception.

Firstly, I want to ask who is there out there similar to Magdalen Berns today makings vids as to the point as hers? She had a wonderful way with words.

Secondly, I never even knew she existed when she was alive. And I don't much go in for getting sad about the deaths of people I don't know. I can think of few exceptions apart from a couple of indie singer songwriters whose songs meant loads to me when I was 17... but every time one of her vids comes up as a suggested view on youtube it really affects me. I wish she were around today, fighting the fight and putting out content.

I’m in some ways on the fence on trans issues, but I’m saddened that something as ubiquitous as cancer which really can strike any one of us could be met with glee.

Condolences to her family. A bright articulate young woman gone too soon. Flowers

Magdalen’s sister is raising money for Marie Curie to say thank you. I can’t link (against MN rules), but you can find it easily on Twitter. Smile

ImpossibleNovelty · 15/09/2019 21:21

Good to hear that Spartacus. The messages from donors have made me tear up (again). What a woman.

Magdalen’s sister has set up a justgiving page to raise money for Marie Curie, in appreciation of their support for Magdalen. I’m not sure if we’re allowed to link to fundraisers but this can just be deleted if not: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/elizabeth-berns1

Sad news.
Rest in peace
And thank you

Anyone who would wish incurable cancer on another is an asshole.

Signed, an Oncology mum.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 15/09/2019 09:36

Yeah, Which, that's not a sentiment I can go along with. I wouldn't wish a brain tumour on anyone. That would make me as bad as the cyclepath.

Whichoneofyoudidthat · 15/09/2019 09:29

Probably not Bernard but there you have it.

TirisfalPumpkin · 15/09/2019 09:27

I don't wish death or illness on anyone. Even unpleasant narcissists who post grave-dancing gifs. I hope they live a long life with all the chance for reflection that entails.

Beerincomechampagnetastes · 15/09/2019 09:22

You’re just brilliant Magdalen, I used your videos as an introduction to gc feminism for my dd, she absolutely adores you too.

We will miss you.

BernardBlacksWineIceLolly · 15/09/2019 09:12

I don't think that's a particularly constructive comment Which, and I'd be pretty surprised if that sentiment was shared by many other posters here

Usually when someone dies I use the formulaic 'May her memory be a blessing' or similar.

There are a lot of us who remember her, who will continue to think of her, who learnt from her. Her influence on this world has been immense.

I too want to thank her for her bravery and her humour and her ability to state the truth clearly.

BabyItsAWildWorld · 14/09/2019 20:01

She was pivotal for me in understanding what is going on.
So clear, so bright, so funny, so fearless.

Thank you Magdalen, so many women will carry a bit of your bravery with them forever.

snowbear66 · 14/09/2019 19:36

Loved your videos Magdalen,

You will be missed.

deepwatersolo · 14/09/2019 18:14

My sincere condolences to Magdalen's family and loved ones. She will be missed, and not only by the ones who knew her personally.
